Subject: RE: BS: It's a crazy world From: Essex Girl Date: 20 Jul 06 - 09:40 AM Travelling to work is not a problem, but getting on a commuter train in the evening that has been sitting in the sun all afternoon is unbearable, it feels as though the heating is on even though it isn't.When will we come to grips with "extreme" weather? Southern Europe manages to cope admirably in the summer and Canada/Alaska do the same in much colder winters than ours. I just think that we british have a love affair with complaining about the weather. |

Subject: RE: BS: It's a crazy world From: Liz the Squeak Date: 20 Jul 06 - 03:54 AM There are rules about transporting animals in high temperatures..... none for humans. Commuters are experiencing temperatures of 45degrees on some trains. Journeys are taking longer because people jam into one carriage, won't stagger their journeys and don't take water or fans with them. So far (touch wood), I've not heard of any track damage due to excessive heat but it's only a matter of time. London Transport are already banning drivers from wearing shorts. Expect a strike soon! Subject: RE: BS: It's a crazy world From: jacqui.c Date: 19 Jul 06 - 08:56 AM Yep - a 20 mile cycle from where I lived into the City - not only too far but too dangerous. In this sort of heat or in heavy rain or snow also very uncomfortable. The only way that most of those commuting in can do it is by train and so you are at the mercy of the train companies. I paid two thousand pounds a year for my season ticket for a journey of just under the hour on a dirty, overcrowded train with no toilet facilities. I used to work locally to where I lived but then my firm decided to move into the City and, since there was no alternative work I could get in my industry, I didn't really have any alternative than to move in. House prices anywhere closer than Hertford were out of my price range. This is the situation most commuters find themselves in and the train companies have a monopoly on their particular stretch of line so why bother making it better for a captive audience? |

Subject: RE: BS: It's a crazy world From: jacqui.c Date: 19 Jul 06 - 08:32 AM When I was working in London I still have fond memories of train heating systems that didn't work during the winter but came on full blast in the summer. Nothing's changed. |

Subject: BS: It's a crazy world From: nutty Date: 19 Jul 06 - 03:18 AM We , in the UK, must have the most inefficient rail system in the world. In the Autumn, trains get delayed because of wet leaves on the track. In winter, it's the wrong kind of snow But in the heat of the summer you would expect air conditioning to make journey that bit more bearable ..... THINK AGAIN ....... BBC NEWS REPORT |
