Guest PLC, Google 'bog bodies' for an eye opener on the preservative powers of peat.

For one thing, it was written on vellum, not paper. For another, it was in a peat bog, not submerged in water. There is a difference.

If the book is so old, how can if still be read enough to know what it is opened to? I have seen water damage to books and you can't read them. Did they have better ink back then?

...though now that I go hunting in the King James version cited by the piece, I can't find any reference to the Vale of Tears, only to the Valley of Beca (presumably the Bekaa Valley, now being bombed to shite out of it by the IDF). Hmmmmmmm.....

a) The Vikings didn't stick to coastal areas; Ireland is full of rivers, and their longboats could sail in three feet depth of water. Illuminated manuscripts were enormously valuable and very, very tradeable, a real prize - equivalent to stealing a Picasso today. Monasteries were where these, and also stores of beautifully worked gold ornaments, were kept, so they were a prime target.

b) The books were also regarded as somehow magical by many people, and were often carried into battle to protect the particular grouping that carried them - especially one particular one, known as the Cathach...but that's another story.

c) The psalms were differently numbered then, and the psalm on which the book was open was in fact one about earth being a "vale of tears", which is certainly no word of a lie.

....who is to say that a 'Christian' monk wasn't 'donated' by his family but didn't believe in the New Religion?

well - most novices who were pledged by their families entered very young (a sizeable percentage even as infants) and "indoctination" would have been very hard to avoid ewven for older youths.

The Jews in Spain and other regions who went "undercover" found this out, because they lost a high percentage of their youth to the masquarade - even though they were doing their best to educate the youngsters in the faith to which they were born.

Novices to Christian monastaries would also have lacked opputunities to even learn about other faiths.

Remember - religion permeated every facet of life during those times. there was no seperation of church and anything, let alone church and state.

RE: impossible to know how the manuscript ended up in the bog

My guess is strangulation by wicked wiccans, fearful of the LIGHT that was undermining their world of darkness.

Here's a bit more about it:

Specialists have said it is impossible to know how the manuscript ended up in the bog, but believe it may have been lost in transit or dumped after a raid possibly 1,000-1,200 years ago — while estimates date the book to 800AD.

Didn't some lads over in Iraq get into trouble for
flushing a Koran down the bog?

I wonder if that one will come up as a great find
in the year 3000?

About sixty years ago my brothers found a large oaken tray about two feet down in a bog in the
North of Ireland. It was the sort of thing that you see in old pictures where a couple of servants
are coming in to a hall carrying a roast piglet or some such thing. The bog was pretty isolated at
that time, and must have been much more so when the tray was lost or abandoned, so it's a puzzle
as to how it got there.

The photograph appears to show a closed book, but the news report says it was found open at Psalm 83, about nations trying to wipe out the name of Israel.
Has someone used the news to slip in a political comment?

Paul the Vikings may have settled along the coast a read through any book on the history of the Vikings in Ireland will show that they carried out numerous raids inland, all the monastic sites situated along inland rivers were raided.

As to how it finished up in a bog, many items have been found in Irish bogs, some hidden by monks fleeing from marauding enemies.

Wouldn't be old religion in 800-1000AD, Ireland was pretty well Christianised by then- St.Patrick died before 500AD. The Vikings tended to stick to the coastal areas, so probably not them either. I'd look around nearby for the guy that fell in the bog with it. I wonder if it's illuminated?

I can think of a few ideas about why it was pitched in.....

An Old Religion person getting 'pissed orf' about the new Religion, or having converted, pitching it in as an offering....perhaps?

Druid Prince is a GOOD book, non fiction, about an apparently willing human sacrifice to the Old Gods. Highly reccomended.

Thread creep continued: I just finished "Ireland" in time for my second trip there. I will be seeing Newgrange with new eyes! It's not the country's greatest literature, but it's a good read and manages to collect many of Ireland's legends and history under one cover.

Cool about the bog book, too.

Cheers,
Michael

Thanks for the recommendations, Jeff. I'll look for those books next time I go to the boostore.

Patty, I didn't find that to be with "Ireland." I was a bit irritated, at first, that he didn't write the Storyteller's *voice* in the vernacular, but as I got into it, I realised it would have been too much of an artifice, a distraction, besides I can *hear* it in my head, anyway.:-) I DO agree that is well worth getting into. I love all of the stories, so far.

It will be interesting to follow this story and see what they find about it.

Tip on the book "Ireland". It is really good, but it takes a while to get rolling. You could read the first pages, decide 'this has no lyric quality, can an Irishman really be the author' and put it down, big mistake. It is well worth seeing through.

kat, I have that book, too. It's on my list of books to read, but I got a bunch of them at the same time, so it has to wait. I also recommend "The Dublin Saga," by Edward Rutherfurd. I've read "The Princes of Ireland" and am now reading "The Rebels of Ireland." They're long, but there's a lot of real history contained in them.

That is AWESOME!! Thanks for the link.

I am reading a very good, fictionalised book about a lot of Ireland's past called "Ireland" by Frank Delaney. He does a good job, imo, of describing, through a Storyteller, the history, culture, etc. Reading that and then hearing about this wondrous discovery is just neat!
