Can we be sure he saved the world? WWIII might have been shorter and less messy than what are dealing with now and what our children will have to deal with.
A war between say Kruschev and Kennedy would surely have been more civilised than a war between Bush and his demons...or am I just talking through a hole in my head?

Did Petrov save the world or did he miss his opportunity to save it?

A good many years ago, on this day, during the Cold War, a certain Russian military man refused to believe that the blips on his screen were real US missiles, thus averting a Russian Missile launch.

This would have been, of course, proof of Russia starting WW III.
