Subject: RE: BS: PA Farm Show - Tractor Square Dance From: LilyFestre Date: 12 Jan 07 - 05:54 PM Hey Greg! We live in Pennsylvania too and all our vehicles veer suddenly when passing by a tractor show, store, a cool old tractor parked by a barn and yes, even by the houses where there are 5+ antique tractors parked in the front yard as a decoration! I didn't realize it was a PA thing though, I thought it was more of a "boy" thing! :) Tractor Square Dances or not, the Pennsylvania Farm Show is an incredible event for anyone interested in agriculture. I've been a few times and always leave AMAZED! Go if you can!!! Michelle |

Subject: RE: BS: PA Farm Show - Tractor Square Dance From: Greg B Date: 12 Jan 07 - 03:02 PM Okay. I admit it. I own a restored antique tractor. And I live in Pennsylvania. (The 1956 IHC 300U earns its keep, mind you, mowing some acres of horse pastures and plowing the snow off the access road in the winter) |

Subject: RE: BS: PA Farm Show - Tractor Square Dance From: JohnInKansas Date: 12 Jan 07 - 01:55 PM There's no real need to plow the ground in perfect circles. The center pivot irrigation rigs only spread water in a perfect circle, so nothing grows outside the circle that gets wet, regardless of how you plow or what you plant there. The tractor square-dance thing has been fairly common at antique machine shows and at state fairs for quite a while. There are also clubs that square-dance with supercharged riding lawnmowers at club events. A couple of years ago we made it to the "Amish Rodeo" at Yoder Kansas, where the main event was the mule races. It was obvious to me that our local "simple folk" were not averse to enjoying themselves, but the impressive thing was that it was also obvious that the mules were having a ball, and really enjoyed showing off what they could do. (An indication of great mutual respect between the owners and animals?) John |

Subject: RE: BS: PA Farm Show - Tractor Square Dance From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 12 Jan 07 - 01:12 PM I once checked out a library book by an English painter (modern) who painted realistic views of rural life. He made the remark in his text that festivals usually consist of people walking around with impassive faces. So don't tease the Pennsylvanians for not smiling. Apparently they are just being normal. I would have liked to see the square-dancing tractors. I would also like to know how they plow the ground (in kansas, for exmple) in perfect circles under the irrigation pivots. |

Subject: RE: BS: PA Farm Show - Tractor Square Dance From: Scoville Date: 12 Jan 07 - 10:53 AM Well, my aunt square dances with her dogs, so I don't see why not. In Iowa, everybody who was anybody had a restored vintage tractor. Every implement or farm supply place with any pretensions had one. People would keep the tractor in the garage and the new car outside. It was a really big deal. My little college town would have Ag[riculture] Day and there would be fifty pristine trailer-queen tractors in the park. And I assure you there was absolutely no laughing. |
