If Mal or Rob or any of the other members of Reynard happen to visit this thread again, Ken from my local folk club has been singing Leviathan for years now. He'd like to put a video of himself playing the song on Youtube and wonders if you're okay with that?

He's also been known to sing Bold Reynard, Liking is Easy and Gadara Moor, too...

Bold Reynolds (not "Reynard")as recorded by Martyn Wyndham-Read on his CD "Mussels on a Tree" was written by Dave Toye of Sussex.

"My name it is Bold Reynolds,

Bold Reynard was written by Malcom Eden and was indeed on the Reynard album 'Green Anthem.' All the songs on Reynard's two albums, 'Fresh From The Earth ' and 'Green Anthem' were either written by members of Reynard or were traditional.

I know this reply is a few years late and am not sure whether anyone will read it, but I was a founder member of Reynard and wrote Leviathan and co-wrote Bold Reynard with Andy Wood.

Apparently you may be able to get (presumably, unauthorised) CDR copies of the album from 'The Christian Music Exchange' at  http://members.aol.com/cmx/remast.htm.  In a nod to copyright law, they state "To comply with copyright law you should own an original copy of the item on record, tape, 8-Track or damaged CD to aquire [sic] a copy of the item on CDR."

That's probably a mis-interpretation of the law (and American law, at that), but there it is.

Thanks for the info on Green Anthem. Not only have you given me something on "Bold Reynard" but you've also linked up with another thread. "Oh You Great Leviathan" was also on that album as I remember. I wonder were those songs theirs or someone else's?

This is certainly a version (though somewhat changed in places) of 'Bold Reynolds' / 'You Gentlemen of High Renown' (Roud 190); there are several examples with tunes, including Gardiner C24, though that example was got in Cornwall.

Of published versions, best known is the Copper Family set and (because recorded by the Young Tradition and subsequently copied by a great many revival singers) the version noted by RVW from Stephen Pole or Poll (Norfolk 1905). This last was the subject of an at times quite bizarre discussion here some time ago: What are jubal hounds?

I have a version collected in Hampshire by George Gardiner that is totally different and I cannot find a similar version - with NO TUNE - Can anyone suggest a tune for these words?

A little trawling reveals that Green Anthem was Reynard's second album, released in 1979; their first having been Fresh From The Earth (1976). Both were released on the Grapevine label; the band was from Liverpool and had previously (until 1975) been called Flight. I find no indication of which of several different songs might be meant here.

I have sung a song called Bold Reynard for several years now.    I got it from an album called Green Anthem by a folk/rock band called Reynard(or vice-versa)many years ago but have long since lost the album. Does anyone know who wrote it alnd where it came from etc?
