Surely if the root of the word sarcophagus (a corrupted "os" ending) is ancient Greek then the plural should be sarcophagoi. My classics master at school was most insistent about the plural of "discus" being "discoi".

Sarcophagi..... disci..... octopi ...... I agree with the ending in 'i' bit Richard but where did the 'o' come from??. I believe octopus... is the only one that can be octopuses or octopi. If my memory of my schooldays is anywhere near correct LOL

We are all familiar with the classical Greek "oi" ending - as exemplified in "oi (well, there is a rough breathing, so it's usually rendered "hoi") polloi"
