The New Scientist reports in this article that for the first time, scientists are preparing to deploy an artificial (prosthetic) brain section -- specifically a hippocampus -- into a lab rat.

Mirabile dictu!! The brain itself, a prosthetic? It's a long way from "just a hippocampus" to whole-brain transplants and prosthetics for people but it sure is an interesting step forward.
