Subject: BS: Update on Kendall From: kendall Date: 14 Nov 02 - 09:22 AM I havn't even tried to sing since the Getaway, until last evening. Got together with an old friend, and we made music all evening. I was able to sing half a dozen songs, and my friend said "WOW! Your voice is awsome! I love it." Looks like it is going to be permanently lower than it was; I used to sing "Arbutus" in "A", and I now do it in "F". |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: jeffp Date: 14 Nov 02 - 09:30 AM Sounds mighty encouraging, Cap'n. You might see your range shifting higher as you get the throat muscles back in shape. They are probably very relaxed now, giving the lower range. Should be interesting to hear what happens. All the best. jeffp |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: katlaughing Date: 14 Nov 02 - 09:30 AM Wow, that is wonderful! Lower is sexier, too!! Congratulations, Kendall! |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: Willie-O Date: 14 Nov 02 - 09:46 AM Good stuff Cap. A to F...that IS lower, ennit! Keep up the good work, but don't overdo it. W-O |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: rock chick Date: 14 Nov 02 - 09:49 AM Wow and double Wow, I agree with Katlaughing Lower is sexier, all the best. |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 14 Nov 02 - 09:51 AM Glad to hear it Captain (But I don't think kat ought to talk dirty! "Lower is sexier" indeed!) *BG* RtS ("what are you doing down there?") |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: Tinker Date: 14 Nov 02 - 09:54 AM Great news, can't wait to hear the "new" voice.... |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: JedMarum Date: 14 Nov 02 - 09:55 AM Great news, Kendall but if ya wanna sing in the same keys you used to, maybe they can make you a capo for that throat of yours! |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: Jeri Date: 14 Nov 02 - 09:55 AM Kendall, I am glad it's coming back. I'm glad you were quiet for a while and gave the irritation a chance to calm down - I didn't think you could keep it up very long! The quietness, that is. Your vocal chords may be permanently thickened and voice lower or you might still have some irritation. If permanent - well, your friend sure sounds like he enjoyed the new voice! Lemme see - the next time I'm likely to hear you is...urp - Old Songs??!! Maybe I'll make it to the Shanty Swap in Portland. Haven't decided yet. Are you going? If so, I might commit and I'll warm up the fiddle for back-up. Faded Roses and Loreena and...and if you now do those in E or some equally silly key, I'll see what I can do to make your voice higher! (What key are you singing Faded Roses in now?) |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: Amos Date: 14 Nov 02 - 10:01 AM Absolutely uplifting to hear it!! Thrilled to me toes, Skipper! A |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: gnu Date: 14 Nov 02 - 10:35 AM Had a girlfriend once that use to say, "Lower and slower." Glad to hear you are doing well friend. |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: CapriUni Date: 14 Nov 02 - 10:38 AM Oh, yay! When I saw the thread title, the following worrisome thought popped into my head" Uh-oh. Why do we need an update? What happened? So I am very much relieved that's happy news! "No news is good news" indeed! Whoever came up with that nonsense obviously didn't know you! |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: Rick Fielding Date: 14 Nov 02 - 11:01 AM Awesome!! Awesome!!?? Not only is your voice coming back but you're hangin' out with kids! Great news Kendall POS Rick |

Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: Mark Clark Date: 14 Nov 02 - 11:37 AM What great news, Kendall! Does this mean you won't be taking the high tenor part in bluegrass jams? - Mark |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: kendall Date: 14 Nov 02 - 11:38 AM Thanks folks. This is such a relief. It's been a whole year since I lost my voice. Funny thing, the progress was slow until I caught cold at the Getaway, then since that cleared up healing has speeded up to the point where I am happy with the improvement. Jeri, I will be at the shanty sing. I'm now doing Loreena and the Faded Roses in "F", but, I think I have enough flexibility to do them in "G". By the way, what did you have in mind to "Get me to sing higher"? In any case, I'd love to have you help me on those songs. |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: fat B****rd Date: 14 Nov 02 - 11:55 AM I'm very pleased for you, sir. Kind regards from the fB |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: Kim C Date: 14 Nov 02 - 12:19 PM Well, All Right!!! Don't fret, though, Mister has had to change all his keys too. :-) Funny thing is, though, I can actually sing HIGHER than I used to... |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: Charley Noble Date: 14 Nov 02 - 12:19 PM Kendall- We'll sure look forward to hearing from you on Saturday, November 23rd, beginning at 4 pm, at the China Sea Marine Trading Co., 10 Dana St., in the Old Port of Portland, ME. Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: DougR Date: 14 Nov 02 - 12:21 PM Good news Kendall. Hard to see how your voice could be any better than it was. DougR |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: Brían Date: 14 Nov 02 - 12:33 PM F is my favorite key. Glad to hear you're doing well, Kendall. Brían |

Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: Stephen L. Rich Date: 14 Nov 02 - 01:02 PM Great news, Kendall. Keep it up! Stephen Lee |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: Don Firth Date: 14 Nov 02 - 01:03 PM That's great news! The deepening of the voice might just happen anyway. I've noticed in recent years that most of the keys I used to sing in seem a bit too high for me now, but I've developed a couple of good notes on the bottom that I could only growl before. The only problem is that I have to change a lot of my guitar accompaniments. Don Firth |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: JenEllen Date: 14 Nov 02 - 01:04 PM Wonderful news, and thanks for keeping us posted. Sing on. ~Jen |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: Giac Date: 14 Nov 02 - 01:49 PM God, I love good news! Didn't I post that on another thread? Well, can't have too much of a good thing. So glad to hear this, Kendall. I agree that you should record some songs now to capture your new "basser" voice. Wail away, Cap'n! Mary |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: EBarnacle1 Date: 14 Nov 02 - 01:58 PM Excellent news! Ladies, be careful of what you write. I know how Kendall gained some of his requtation. hehehe |

Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: curmudgeon Date: 14 Nov 02 - 02:04 PM Good Show Kendall! Looking forward to seeing, and hearing you Saturday week -- Tom |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: SINSULL Date: 14 Nov 02 - 03:13 PM Kendall and I had dinner together one night last week and he was humming the whole time - in the car, at the restaurant, while complaining about the food... I assumed he had a new lady in his life. Should have realized he was anticipating getting his voice back. He is VERY happy these days. Wonder how Gordon Bok is going to like the competition. |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: kendall Date: 14 Nov 02 - 09:27 PM Today in the car I was singing along with Gordon on RAMBLE AWAY, IN HIS KEY! However, I'm not going to do a lot of transposing until I know where my voice is going to settle. |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: Escamillo Date: 14 Nov 02 - 09:39 PM Those are great news, Kendall. After all, when I try some "grand tenor" aria just for amusement, I bring it down a full tone and nobody notices as long as I keep a light timbre and don't try to play the "macho". But if your voice is deep enough, why not taking advantage of a new range, more warm and obscure, which could open a full new world of expression ? Un abrazo, Andrés |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: Stilly River Sage Date: 14 Nov 02 - 09:50 PM What a year, eh, Kendall? You should have a marvelous Thanksgiving this year. That's the holiday that is most important all year in my family, the one when we gather and are just glad to all be together again and to enjoy each other. You and your friends and family will have a lot to reflect on and feel grateful for. SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: Joe Offer Date: 14 Nov 02 - 11:08 PM Oh, gee, that's just what Maine needs, another Gordon Bok... Kendall, I'm glad you have your voice back and that you can sing low and everything, but I still can't understand why the women think you're so damn cute. -Joe Offer, jealous- |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: CET Date: 14 Nov 02 - 11:23 PM Best news I've heard in a long time, Kendall. Wish I could join you in Portland for the shanty sing. However, God willing, that won't be the last shanty sing in those parts. The one we went to last year was our introduction to real live Mudcatters. I want to hear you sing Patrick Spencer again. Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: SINSULL Date: 15 Nov 02 - 07:41 AM We think it's the dimples, Joe. But in your case, it's those twinkling eyes. When you smile you remind me of the boys my mother wouldn't let me date. |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: Tinker Date: 15 Nov 02 - 07:55 AM SINSULL, they've both got down that headtilt, smile thing too....Kendall adds in the down home aw-shucks thing... |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: Naemanson Date: 15 Nov 02 - 07:57 AM You know, Giac made a comment about Kendal's "basser" voice. Well I've heard some of the songs he won't sing around women and he was just as base before his voice changed.... |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: Genie Date: 15 Nov 02 - 10:08 AM Glad to hear it, Kendall! Amos played one of your cuts from the Mudcat CD for me last week. A voice like yours should not be silenced! Lower key is fine. (Joan Baez's voice is lower than it used to be, too.) Just so you keep singing! Genie |

Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: DADGBE Date: 15 Nov 02 - 10:24 AM Good for you Kendall! Remember what katlaughing and rock chick said? It's true. Tenors think they're hot stuff but the basses get the girls. When are you coming out to northern California? Best regards, Ray |

Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: Joe Offer Date: 15 Nov 02 - 10:38 AM Hmmmm. Sinsull thinks Kendall's going to start to sound like Bok. Genie thinks he'll be more like Baez. This is getting interesting... -Joe Offer, still jealous- |

Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: Tinker Date: 15 Nov 02 - 12:23 PM Now Joe, I have very clear memories of my first Getaway at what has become known as the bench shanty sing.... Wasn't there a sweet guy who smiled shyly and said he didn't have a song to sing but would like to request something "bawdy"???? How many women sang for you that night Joe???? BG |

(patent pending) All seriousness aside (as Steve Allen used to say), I am EXCEEDINGLY glad to hear you're singing again. That's great @##$ing news. There may yet be a venue for the Rick Fielding Trio. Good on you, my friend. You have cheered me up considerable with this news. Yes, yes, yes. Chance. |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: mmb Date: 15 Nov 02 - 08:02 PM Hi, Kendall - - Hearing Gordon Bok's and Stan Rogers' voices is like being enfolded in a soft warm blanket on a chilly night. If this means I can add another blanket when life's Winters come along, bring on that New CD!!!!! PS. If CA is too far, how about the Tampa Bay area? I don't know if I'll be able to make Old Songs this year. MMB : ) |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: kendall Date: 15 Nov 02 - 11:53 PM At this point, I intend to visit Utah Phillips in the spring, and, if I'm going to travel that far, I will want to visit some Mudcatters too. If my voice holds out, I will be going to Florida in January, so, we should be able to connect in one place or the other. |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: Joe Offer Date: 16 Nov 02 - 02:38 AM You're right, Kendall - I ended up with a wonderful woman... Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: SINSULL Date: 16 Nov 02 - 12:01 PM Warm and Fuzzies: Kendall sang at the Side Door Cafe last night in Brunswick and was warmly greeted and applauded. He perfomed two songs perfectly and chose not to do a third although he was invited to. His voice is in better shape than his fingers. Practice! Practice! Practice! One young man who runs the sound system for the cafe played on his "new" old Epiphone (Epiphany!...joke). He rambled a bit before he played about how it may not seem appropriate to play what he was about to play but he didn't know that a friend would be there tonight, etc. In short, he dedicated his performance of a blues/rock number to Kendall whom he obviously admired - another Kendall groupie. Later he asked me if he had embarrassed Kendall because he didn't have something more "folkie" prepared. The respect and admiration was touching. There were of course the usual number of women young and old checking the old guy out. Sorry, Joe. If we can figure a way to bottle it, we could have the next hula hoop. And a lot of friends who were just glad to have him back and healthy. On the whole a very satisfactory "coming out party". |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: kendall Date: 16 Nov 02 - 12:55 PM Mary, I'm going to be needing a manager. Want a job? |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: Bat Goddess Date: 16 Nov 02 - 01:04 PM Great news, Kendall! I knew it would be back if you gave it some time. (I know, I know, it's hard to be patient when it's your voice AND livelihood!) Anyhoo, I'll see (and hear) you at the Portland Shanty Sing -- and I'll bring your book back. Meanwhile I've re-read "Cold As a Dog and the Wind Nor'east" -- aloud, of course. Linn |

Keep on keepin' on & thanks for the muchneeded Good News, as was said. Sinsull, we heard Joe O. WAS one of them boyoes yer mother wouldn't let you date... Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: catspaw49 Date: 16 Nov 02 - 09:55 PM I am of course glad Kendall's well and back, but he already knew that so I've just been reading along.....and, uh.........Well look, I really need to make a buck and I'm fascinated with the concept of bottling Kendall. I think what's required here is to start witha list of ingredients, proportionate quantities, fermenting times....that sort of thing.............Hmmmmmm..........First and fivemost (I've already conquered foremost so I'm on to bigger things) we need to decide on the overall ambience (read:flavor) we're looking for. I mean I don't see kendall as a fizzy soft drink nor do I see him as any sweet wine....perhaps something on the dry side with a touch of sweet aftertaste. But wines don't have enough fire to them, ya' know? Hmmmm......I can't see a Bourbon as Kendall although there is some potential in Brandy.......maybe a liqueur..........I dunno'....too artsy-fartsy............My brains heating up. Anyone got any ideas that would help? I'm gonna' turn on my floor model Gordon Bok Fan and see if I can cool down a bit............. Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: Update on Kendall From: The Pooka Date: 16 Nov 02 - 10:14 PM SINSULL - (sigh) Yeah. Tell me about it. ;} // Ahoy, Mr. 'Spawsir! LOL!
