i suppose you can tell me apart from my dad by my laziness and lack of capitalization (that's a weird word...i think i spelled it wrong)

actually, i don't care much for accordions...probably something to do with the fact that several time is my youth, my father decided playing the accordion at four in the morning would be a good alarm to get me up for swimming lessons (don't ask him, he'll just deny it!)

they're not so bad really...it's just at four in the morning, one doesn't really want to hear much of anything...and accordion music comes pretty high on the list of certain types of sounds you particularily DON'T want to hear.

on the other hand, if i learn to play accordion, i could be the one waking DAD up at four a.m....now that's an idea.

supposedly i'm learning to play guitar. i think i've suposedly learned about five songs so far...supposedly...they all used to be favourites of mine before i murdered them, too. *sigh*

They're both Breton instruments, LH. The biniou being (I think?) the bag pipe; the bombarde is like a chanter with better aim. Although 'better' is a relative description. The bombarde is the musical equivalent of the military bombard - particularly after a long night of pan-celtic revels. [[ooo, me 'ead]]

Oh, yeh. And the Bretons express their celtic contrariness by playing them in duets.

Well, LH, Bombarde & Biniou are the two instruments that always play together in Breton dance music, (an dros, hanter dros, dance plinns, etc.). The Bombarde is somewhat like an oboe and has a high-pitched reedy sound. The Biniou is the Breton form of the bagpipe, played by such folks as Patrick Molard. The Biniou is also very high pitched. Together, they should not listened to at high volumes, as they would probably rupture your eardrums. But I think they are awesome.

Breton bands such as Bagad Breig and Bagad Kemper are massed Biniou bands, that play like massed Highland Pipe Bands, except for the higher pitched instrument. There is a lot of it on Dan Ar Braz's album Héritage des Celtes that has folks from Brittany, Scotland, Ireland, England, and Galicia playing together. "Call To The Dance" features a Biniou massed band (with harmony!) along with Dan Ar Braz playing the traditional melody on his electric guitar.

A couple of years ago I had to do sound for a group called Windbags, one of whom played a Bombard. It was like miking a smoke detector mated to a Whoopee cushion. It was like a New Years Eve tooter on steriods. People who play Bombards should be watched carefully through a small hatch while they sleep...

It was in a church with lively acoustics. We amplified everyone else, but we did not amplify the Bombard. Even then, it hurt people's ears.

An accurate description of a bombard is, that it is like listening to a finely tuned Elk dying in an overly 'hammed up' amature dramatics version of Hamlet. It's loud, painful and seems never to stop.

I actually quite like them. I am of the opinion that they should be listened to in large numbers ( it's the rock child in me ) though not necessarily indoors.

I think LTS meant Celine Dion's throat...or Britney Spears'...not mine.

Some would categorize my hair as "long", depending on where they think "short" ends and "long" begins. It is longer than that of most males these days, but shorter than MMario's. However, he ties his long hair back most of the time, thus making it look shorter than mine, IMO. I once had hair as long as Mario's, but eventually went for the bushy Dylan look instead. It's the dragged-backwards-through-a-barbed-wire-fence look. I like it. Sometimes I get an urge to go for a shorter cut, but only occasionally.

Matt - I would retort that "it's not as hard as you think", but I'm afraid I might be misunderstood entirely if I did! :-)
