Subject: the orange and the green- who was artist From: hooktender Date: 01 Jan 00 - 08:40 PM The song, "The Orange and the Green" was recorded in the US and made popular in the late 1940's or early 1950's, long before the Irish Rovers popularized it several years later. It was sung by a single male vocalist. Does anybody know the name of this vocalist? Thanks, H |

Subject: RE: Help: the orange and the green- who was artis From: Rick Fielding Date: 24 Nov 00 - 11:23 AM If as you say, it "was made popular" in the 40s or 50s wouldn't it be more likely that a "non-folksinger" had recorded it? Could it have been someone like Dennis Day? Rick |
Subject: RE: Help: the orange and the green- who was artis From: GUEST,Reta Date: 25 Nov 00 - 11:34 AM Does the name Barney Peters ring a bell? I have a recording, "The World Famous and Justly Popular BARNEY PETERS", that I was given in the 60's. Don't care for it much, but "The Orange and The Green" is on it. He lived in Sydney, Nova Scotia, where he was in charge of the reservoir that supplied Sydney with water. I don't believe he ever made another recording. He was an unknown, taken to Hollywood to produce this record, and went back as soon as it was finished. He was a 'pub' singer for fun, not a pro. All the songs are Irish, traditional, but are called traditional Nova Scotia songs, as they are since there is a large Irish population there. Blessings, Reta |

Subject: RE: Help: the orange and the green- who was artis From: GUEST Date: 10 Aug 24 - 04:22 PM Actually Barney Peters is my grandfather and he recorded this song. He wasn’t a nobody pub singer. He sung in the Lawrence Welk band and met and stayed at Gene Autry’s house who is my cousin’s god father. My cousin was Scotty Turner a famous record producer in Nashville so RETA get your facts straight! |

Subject: RE: Help: the orange and the green-who was artist From: GUEST,Hootenanny Date: 10 Aug 24 - 05:59 PM This song used to be sung by The Swankie Sisters (Joan & Rena) in the folk clubs such as The Ballads & Blues Association in London in the 1950s/60s. But I have no idea where they learnt it. |
