I don't think I need to take them up with Mick. I accept the moderators' right delete my posts. It's not my ball.

I did not demand, I asked, and I believe I have the right to do that.

According to Mick, he may have that right - but you do not.

I think you mean I don't have the right to expect a reply. That's my last word on this, I'll say no more but I expect you will?

Jesus H., how does a thread on jellyfish become another Shambles moanfest?

I read in an issue of "Fortean Times" about a guy that worked as a lifeguard somewhere. A small jellyfish had come drifting near the shore and someone scooped it up in a cup and had put it in a fridge to preserve it and this lifeguard came in and opened the fridge and that it was the cup of water he had put in there earlier and started to drink it and died when his throat swelled shut.

I remember being raided by jellyfish in the harbor at the Norfolk base. You could look down in the water on a sunny day and see hundreds down there it seemed like.

At night in the Persian Gulf I was on the weatherdeck looking down into the water as the ship was patrolling. I could see these large globes of lights flash down in the water next to the ship. Bright, whitish globes of light about a foot across, it seemed. Like very bright fireflies. They only flashed once but there were so many of them that the flashing was continual as we cut through the water. Another shipmate came out on deck and I pointed it out to him. We were both fascinated and sat on a bollard leaning over the lifelines watching these never-ending flashing lights down in the water close to the hull for I don't know how long.

I asked someone about them later and he said they were "polyps" and that one link someone posted mentioned jellyfish as being akin to polyps. Do jellyfish light up?

Well AR, I can't help you there but I can assure you that a pickle can indeed light up and glow!

Matter of fact we even had a Mudcat song challenge about that and it was won by Amos with this one:

Your Pickle Glows At Night......Amos Jessup
(Tune: The Rising of the Moon)

"Is it really incandescence, that makes you burn like that?
Or a kind of phosphorence, in the water from your tap?
Do ye think that it's genetic? For it really is a fright
Yes it's really quite alarming, when your pickle glows at night"!

CHO: When your pickle glows at night, when your pickle glows at night!
Yes, it's really quite alarming when your pickle glows at night!

"Hushabye, me little colleen, and calm yer fearfful breast!
Tho' it's true my trusty pickle is quite different from the rest
It's the pure electric energy, whenever you're in sight
That wakens up the veggies, 'n makes my pickle glow at night "

So with gentle words, all smiling, he sought to make her calm
'Twas the first night since their wedding, , and he had not known her long!
As she slowly learned to trust him, she learned it was all right
And her fears they were ungrounded, when the pickle glowed at night!

CHO: When your pickle glows at night, when your pickle glows at night
Tho' it still seems quite unusu'l that your pickle glows at night!

By this time a year has passéd by, the lass has changed her tune!
And often asks him to reveal, the "Rising of the Moon"!
Now she thinks she's quite the lucky one, and calls it a delight
When Handsome Jack comes home again, and the pickle glows at night!

CHO: When your pickle glows at night, when your pickle glows at night!
It's such a wondrous feelin' when your pickle glows at night!

**********************************************************************

Only at the 'Cat can you get wonderful stuff like that!!!!

Spaw

"Do jellyfish light up?"

"Luminescent species are found among marine and terrestrial bacteria, annelids or segmented worms (e.g., fireworms), beetles (e.g., fireflies, click beetles, railroad worms), algae (e.g., dinoflagellates), crustaceans (e.g., shrimp, ostracod), mollusks (e.g., squid, clams, limpets), coelenterates (e.g., jellyfish, sea pansies, hydroids), bony fish (e.g., hatchet fish, flashlight fish, pony fish), and cartilaginous fish (e.g., sharks). Luminescent vertebrates (except for certain fish), mammals, higher plants, and viruses do not exist-except for those versions created by recombinant technology."

"Do jellyfish light up?"

Only when they are onshore - they can't strike the matches underwater, mate!
