Here's a great little clip from the late 60's. Woody Allen interviews Billy Graham on TV. Really quite funny. They both acquit themselves rather well, I think, as Allen represents the agnostic viewpoint and Billy Graham responds with the Biblical approach...

Somehow hearing Woody Allen talk about sexual freedom doesn't strike me as funny.

Graham made some very good points which would actually be of great benefit to some of today's ills in western society, but, his profession of blind faith in his interpretaion of scripture and his "one God" makes it unpalatable for anyone with a brain. I mean, Jesus Christ himself would smack Billybob upside the head if he existed.

As for Woody, well, he did make the audience laugh, by stealing jokes from George Carlin.

George Carlin... now, there is man I would like to see as Pope. Then, we would know the answer to the age old question, "Does a bear shit in the woods?"

Yes, Graham made some good points...the only problem is his unshakable assumption that the Bible is the literal and only Word of God, therefore the Truth, the whole Truth, and nothing but the Truth.

That works if you believe it. It doesn't if you don't. I've never considered the Bible to be an infallible reference to Truth, though I do think it has some excellent passages in it here and there. I see no reason to give it precedence over a great many other sacred books from different religious traditions around the world.

Woody Allen, as usual, gets some good laughs out of his typical self-deprecating style of humour. As for the sexual freedom theme, John, that show was recorded in the late 60's. I see no reason to link it with some ethical troubles that Woody Allen got into 3 or more decades later. He was talking to a young 60's audience for whom sexual freedom was pretty much taken for granted as part of their youthful credo. That's why it's interesting to see how forthrightly Billy Graham responds with his traditional Christian morality, and in a rather good-humoured way as well. Their sparring is quite agreeable, I think. It suggests mutual respect and a friendly willingness to agree to disagree. That's good to see.

Well, IMO, Wood isn't all that funny and never has been. If he had 'ethical' trouble 30 years after the interview, you can probably bet the farm he'd always had them.....suppressed or undiscovered by the media/public.

I always thought Billy was a pretty 'fakey' personality. Reminded me of a bad used car salesman, but then look what he WAS selling. See Oral Roberts for similar. Jim Baker....et. al.

Not a combo I'm interested in even if I could watch videos.

They...they like to snipe at me, and you know why? Because I'm a Jew, that's why. And because I'm short, don't discount that. And because I'm from New York too, and I wear glasses, and I have red hair. I've been dealing with this all my life, even when I was a kid. There is a lot of prejudice out there against short people, and Jews, and especially Jews that are short, have glasses and red hair...and are from New York. Like me. Besides which, they all secretly wish they had my wit, my particular sense of...timing, my sophistication, my knowledge of jazz, and all the things that I have that...that they don't have, and that they WISH they did! That's my take on it. That's why they hate me.
