Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Know lyrics to 'I'm sad and i'm lone From: Joe Offer Date: 18 May 00 - 08:19 PM Well, Audz, looking for the phrase [sad and lonely] in square brackets brings up this (click). Don't know if any of those fit your bill, though. Do you know anything more of the song? Fragments of lyrics, where it was heard, anything? If it's a folk song, it oughta be here. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Know lyrics to 'I'm sad and i'm lone From: Jeremiah McCaw Date: 18 May 00 - 09:35 PM Also, one of the lines in a very old song is "I am Sad and I am Lonely". It's called "Bury Me Beneath the Willow". Guarantee it's in the DT. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Know lyrics to 'I'm sad and i'm lone From: Sandy Paton Date: 18 May 00 - 09:36 PM Carl Sandburg sang: I'm sad and I'm lonely, My heart it will break. My sweetheart loves another, And I wish I was dead! Look in his An American Songbag (New York, 1927) at your local library. I assume it's there. Also, it's probably on the recently reissued CD of his early recordings, which I have yet to hear. Can you help, Stewie? You seem to have every folk record ever made. Sandy (just slightly green with envy) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Know lyrics to 'I'm sad and i'm lone From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 18 May 00 - 10:19 PM Last verse that I know: I'm troubled, yes, I'm troubled I'm troubled in my mind. IF this trouble don't kill me I'll live a long time. then repeat the first verse. This was learned from Burl Ives, maybe fifty years ago. Dave Oesterreich |
Subject: Lyr Add: I'M SAD AND I'M LONELY From: Bugsy Date: 18 May 00 - 10:24 PM I'm sad and I'm lonely. My poor heart will break. My true love loves another and I wish I was dead. My cheeks once was red as the buds on a rose, But now they are white as the lily that grows.
Come all you young ladies; take a warning from me.
Well, I'll build me a little cabin in the mountains so high As sung by Derroll Adams. Cheers Bugsy |

Subject: Lyr Add: I'M SAD AND I'M LONELY (from C Sandburg) From: Jim Dixon Date: 19 May 13 - 09:35 PM I'M SAD AND I'M LONELY As sung by Carl Sandburg on "The Great Carl Sandburg: Songs of America" (1999) I'm sad and I'm lonely; my heart it will break. My sweetheart loves another; Lord, I wish I was dead. My cheeks once were red as the bud on the rose, But now they are whiter than the lily that grows. Young ladies, take warnin'; take a warnin' from me: Don't waste your affection on a young man so free. He'll hug you; he'll kiss you; he'll tell you more lies That the cross-ties on the railroad or the stars in the sky. I'll build me a cabin in the mountain so high, Where the blackbird can't see me or hear my sad cry. I'm troubled; I'm troubled; I'm troubled in mind. If trouble don't kill me, I'll live a long time. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm Sad and I'm Lonely From: Reinhard Date: 20 May 13 - 02:02 AM Carl Sandburg?

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm Sad and I'm Lonely From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 20 May 13 - 02:06 PM Another version of "The Inconstant Lover," sharing similar verses and the tune. Go build me a log cabin on the mountain so high, Where the wild goose can't find me or hear my sad cry. It's trouble, it's trouble, It's trouble on my mind; If trouble don't kill me I'll sure live a long time. They will hug you, they will kiss you, they will tell you more lies Than cross ties on railroads, and stars in the skies. Verses from 248, "The Inconstant Lover," pp. 271-274, Frank C. Brown, North Carolina Folklore, vol. 3, Folk Songs from North Carolina. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm Sad and I'm Lonely From: GUEST Date: 16 Oct 24 - 08:33 AM Just a few days ago listening to a playlist of Carl Sandburg's collection of folk songs I was glad when for the first time i tried to sing I'm Sad And Lonley. I have added it to other playlist. It is quite remarkable that some of the words have a lot of existing to other folk songs from the west. the tune does not have any info of where it came from and finding out versions of this song was great. One I found was by Burl Ives recorded in 1949 and in 1957 the Roy Head children's choir did a great version of this song I believe Roy was partly teaching a school in Pittsburgh Pennsyvania. The tune for this song brought more fame after 1957 when Alun Lomax was collecting folk songs from Britain. One statement said Carl did go to Britain to see the folks there. The tune got a new lease of life when Alun Lomax met a famaly group from Ireland but one opinion said that Carl did not like that song. If any Mudcat folk know of others who have recorded the song then I would like to know. Thanks very much from Joe. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm Sad and I'm Lonely From: GUEST,Hootenanny Date: 16 Oct 24 - 02:05 PM I believe it was Derroll Adams who was responsible for many of us learning this song when he came to Europe with Jack Elliott in the late 50's early 60's and recorded it. I always enjoyed hearing my friend John Whelan sing this. |
