I am a musician in Columbus, Ms. We have several Swamp Pop fans (Louisianna). I desparately need the lyrics to Mathilda.

Which Mathilda? The only one I'm sure of is "Mathilda finally came back home" recorded in Louisiana sometime in the 50s by a local band Cookie and his Cupcakes. Is that the one you have in mind?

Could it be "The Band Played Waltzing Mathilda"? It's incredibly popular amongst them traditional types.

I suspect the song Skip desperately wanted is this one. (Do you suppose he's still desperate?) It's sometimes classified as Cajun, rock, rockabilly, or country. Dan Newton and the Shoe Band performed it on A Prairie Home Companion, July 6, 2002. The link will bring you to a page where you can play the audio file.

You can have a single chorus instead, or triple or more; make it fit the mood. Before every Matilda you can fit in whatever you want:
Everybody, sing the chorus/music, sing a little softer/louder, just the girls/guys now /left/right side /audience/singers/music, one more beer please, name of the solist, () keep on verb-ing. Rather than let it stand on a Venezuela, the end can also be a plea for Matilda to come back.

Jim Dixon got it right.
Not really "swamp pop" tho, more like pure rock n roll.
Just because it was made in Louisiana by a Cajun combo dont make it cajun. A lot of western swing, rock and other stuff were all staple diets of dance hall bands who played whatever the folks wanted.
Sadly, Cajun music went into decline a couple of times in its history.
Thankfully, it has survived. (despite Swamp Pop :-))
