Which Mathilda? The only one I'm sure of is "Mathilda finally came back home" recorded in Louisiana sometime in the 50s by a local band Cookie and his Cupcakes. Is that the one you have in mind?

Could it be "The Band Played Waltzing Mathilda"? It's incredibly popular amongst them traditional types.

If you are talking about the Belafonte song such as was used in the movie, "Beetlejuice", you can find it here:

Surely neither of the last two can be described as Swamp Pop?

I suspect the song Skip desperately wanted is this one. (Do you suppose he's still desperate?) It's sometimes classified as Cajun, rock, rockabilly, or country. Dan Newton and the Shoe Band performed it on A Prairie Home Companion, July 6, 2002. The link will bring you to a page where you can play the audio file.

MATHILDA
George Khoury and Huey Thierry, © Combine Music Corp. (BMI)

CHORUS: Mathilda, I cried and cried for you.
It makes no diff'rence what you do.
Mathilda, I cried and cried in vain.
I want my baby back again.

1. You gave me love when there was none.
You know that you're the only one.
Deep in my heart you will remain.
I'll always love you just the same. CHORUS

2. My love for you will always be
Such a precious memory.
I'll always love you, come what may,
No matter what you do or say. CHORUS

[Recorded by Van Broussard, Cookie & the Cupcakes, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Freddy Fender, Clarence "Frogman" Henry, Sleepy LaBeef, Jerry Lee Lewis, The String-A-Longs, The Texas Tornados, and several others.]

Mathilda, Mathilda, she take-a the money & she run with the barber.
She found her 1st romance when I broke the zipper on my pants.

Hi,

Could it be "Matilda"? For example:

Hey!
C:
Matilda!
Matilda!
Matilda, she take me money and run Venezuela.
Once again now:
Matilda!
Matilda!
Matilda, she take me money and run Venezuela.

Five hundred dollars, friends, I lost:
Woman even sell me ca(r)t and ho(r)se!
(A-hey-ah!) - Matilda, she take me money and run Venezuela.

Everybody!
C

Well, the money was to buy me house an' lan'
Then she got a serious plan,
(A-hey-ah!) - Matilda, she take me money and run Venezuela.

Sing the chorus!
C

Well, the money was just inside me bed,
Stuck up in a pillow beneath me head.
(Don't you know) - Matilda, she found me money and run Venezuela.

Everybody!
C

Well the women was in a big red dress
Wow, she made my life a mess
Matilda, she take me money and run Venezuela.

Everybody!
C

Well, me friends, never to love again,
All me money gone in vain!
(A-hey-ah!) - Matilda, she take me money and run Venezuela.

One more time now!
R

You can have a single chorus instead, or triple or more; make it fit the mood. Before every Matilda you can fit in whatever you want:
Everybody, sing the chorus/music, sing a little softer/louder, just the girls/guys now /left/right side /audience/singers/music, one more beer please, name of the solist, () keep on verb-ing. Rather than let it stand on a Venezuela, the end can also be a plea for Matilda to come back.

The Allan Sherman version, perhaps?

Ma Zelda, Ma Zelda
She take the money and run with the tailor.

That tailor really hurt my pride--
He made my lapels an inch too wide, etc.

Jim Dixon got it right.
Not really "swamp pop" tho, more like pure rock n roll.
Just because it was made in Louisiana by a Cajun combo dont make it cajun. A lot of western swing, rock and other stuff were all staple diets of dance hall bands who played whatever the folks wanted.
Sadly, Cajun music went into decline a couple of times in its history.
Thankfully, it has survived. (despite Swamp Pop :-))
