hallo all , 80 % of the nation is against EU membership .
and now some Icelanders has but on a group of men some kind of ( IRA )
its called ÍSS .....oh dear ...and they ask members to have riffles
and if know kung fu and if they can make bombs ...and this is no joke
:O( .
they say they will fight for freedom and Iceland should not go into EU .
I am against EU also , but this is way out of line ......

Now I am worry for our future .

I wouldn't worry, skarpi. If 80% of Icelanders are against joining the EU, you won't need guns or anything like that to avoid joining. There'd have to be a vote in favour of coming in in order to be allowe3d in. Probably a referendum - possibly a vote in parliament, as when the UK joined the then Common Market.

Well the UK government promised "consultation" on the Maastricht treaty, and on the Not The Maastricht Treaty too...

On second thoughts Skarpi, get those dragon ships afloat, we'll join you...

The Uk already is fighting off Icelandic fishermen from UK claims, soon they will be shooting mackerel at each other.

The thing is, Iceland wouldn't be able to get into the EU if 80% of its people are against it, even if it had a government that wanted to overrule their wishes. It wouldn't be allowed in by the other member states.

That sort of extremism is in every country. Fortunately, it was thrown out of Idaho, but it still keeps raising its ugly, ugly head.

I "read" some of the links. Scary. Skarpi, I have an extra bedroom if you need it.

There wasn't a referendum when the U.K. joined the E.E.C., as it was then. The referendum came later, after a change of government, to see whether we wanted to stay in.

That's what I said. They just had a vote in parliament. I doubt if that would be seen as adequate now for a new candidate for membership.

In any case I find it hard to envisage a parliament pushing ahead against the wishes of 80% of its electors. And in those circumstances it is virtually certain the next election would just see Iceland opt out of the EU - which is why the other member states wouldn't allow it in on in those circumstances.
