A talented British country musician, who first played banjo at the age of 15 and then mastered guitar, autoharp, mandolin and bass. In 1965, he relocated to Leeds and graduated from Leeds University in 1970. Between 1966 and 1969, he played in a duo with Roger Knowles, which featured regularly on various radio broadcasts, including the BBC Country Meets Folk, where they sometimes played with Brian Golbey and Pete Stanley as a four-piece unit. Strutt and Knowles played as support for Hank Snow and Willie Nelson on UK appearances, before their influences saw them turn more to seminal country rock. In 1970 Strutt turned fully professional but between 1969 and 1971, he and Knowles played with Natchez Trace. In 1972, they parted amicably with Knowles opting for more traditional music and Strutt favouring the contemporary. He had already joined Bob Pegg and Carole Pegg in the folk rock band Mr. Fox, and, after this highly rated but commercially unsuccessful unit's demise, recorded two excellent duo albums with Bob Pegg. When folk rock waned, Strutt returned to country music, playing regularly around the northern country club scene. In the late 70s, he worked on production and played as a session musician for the now defunct Look label. Here he worked with many artists, especially with Mel Hague but also produced albums for folk singer Alex Campbell and country star Tommy Collins. In the early 80s, he turned more to old-time music again and often worked and recorded with Brian Golbey. He commented that "with the advent of New Country, line dancing and blander performances, our picking and grinning style was regarded as a novelty." During the mid-80s, Strutt played part-time with various units, including a swing quartet, but returned full-time in 1990. He began teaching guitar, mandolin and bass and appeared regularly with Hague's band. He also played old-time music at regular venues with banjoist Tim Howard of the Muldoon Brothers. In 1994, he began working with a trio called Finnegan's Wake. Over the years, Strutt has refused to be pigeonholed and his mandolin playing is unique. He acknowledges the influence of Bill Monroe and John Duffey but confesses: "I was never any good at stealing licks accurately, so I made up my own; copying any instrument I liked be it trumpet, dobro, clarinet or trombone." He runs jam sessions in Leeds, which often feature 20 musicians on numerous different instrument |

Anyway, I knew him well in the late 70s and 80s and did some gigs with him.He played a lovely Gibson 1920s A-series mandolin, and was exceptional on it.Good guitarist too. When I knew him he was leading a rather bohemian lifestyle from a dowdy flat on Harehills Road.As I was very green at the time I found this exciting - he was very fond of the weed, but smoked and drank enthusiastically whenever the opportunity arose.He was great company - immensely likeable,very lively and good fun to be with, almost always with a smile on his face - especially when he was playing music. |

I first came across his at the Sunday lunch music gigs run by Barbara and Royce Seabourn ( Gallery). Nick was mainly working with Jeremy Wolstenholme at that time and they often guested at The Beggars Folk Club. I saw him working with Brian Golbey,with Roger Knowles and with Dave Rowinsky but there was never anything to match the buzz that was to be seen, heard and felt at the Grove on a Sunday lunch when Nick together with Ian Firbairn and Paul Buckley would turn the back room of a pub into a world stage. The photo image of him that will stick with me is the one with Bob Pegg on the 1973 album cover. He was very good company, and I remember conversations with him about his whippets, having kids, music, the state of the world and booze. A wonderfully skilled and beautifully individual musician of course. Pity we weren't in touch more recently. |

He made music fun! I've been extremely proud to call Nick one of my closest friends over the last 13 years. Never failed to amaze me musically with some of those 'florries' as Gordon well put it above, and I really enjoyed his stories of life 'on the road'. I first met Strutto back in 1965 at Romford Folk Club where he was part of a trio with Janet Kerr and Les Western. Over the years we were always in touch and Pete Stanley and I often played with him and Roger Knowles at gigs and on radio. Around 1980 we formed duo and travelled around quite a bit both here and on the continent. We only made one album together "Last Train South" which is a pity. In later years he often came and stayed with my family and was a great favourite at my local "The Hop Pole" in Beeston, Notts. It's always difficult to put thoughts into words at a time like this but I shall miss him always. Our thoughts and love are with his family at this time. Till we meet again my dear friend RIP. |

He was great company from the beginning. We shared a flat (with Dave Harkess) where I remember Roger Knowles coming round to practice with Nick. Nick introduced me to lots of music which was previously unknown to me and I have never lost a love of much country music since then. We had many great nights in the clubs in Leeds. He was a wonderfully talented musician of great versatility but he will probably best be remembered for his remarkable mandolin playing. He will be greatly missed by many people. |

That infectious enthusiasm of his, that scathing, lacerating wit which sprang nimbly from his impudent, chirpy gob, is lost to us now. Nick's baby face belied both an impish, quicksilver personality and an joyously accomplished musical ability, either of which always brought instant good cheer. I have nothing but fond memories of him. We first met as students at Leeds Uni, where he was 'Agric' Nick Strutt for a year, before changing direction, from the science path which Dick Wilcocks expected him to follow to the artistic path which truly formed him. We were lodged at the Grand Hotel, Harrogate in the autumn term of 1965, awaiting completion of our new Hall of Residence. It was at the Grand Hotel where the antics of the rascally Strutt/Warrington/Wilcocks trio from Essex first came to my notice. In Nick's early days at Leeds University he was saved from expulsion by Jack Straw, our local Students Union rep. I dimly remember his very early partnership with Roger Knowles (well done, loyal Roger, for sticking with our pal), and the odd trips up to Middlesborough or Billingham to see him perform. In 1966, when hewere living with Mike G and Dave H on Cardigan Road, Leeds, he hooked up with Hugo McGill and Eric Bell, who used to come round with him and crash out at my shared student house. Ritchie Bull became a good mate, also through Nick, and later Bob Pegg too. The last time I saw Nick play was at the Shoulder of Mutton in Castleford, at a bash celebrating his 55th birthday, a unforgettable musical afternoon and evening. The last time I actually spent time in his company was around 2003, when he had moved in with Hugo and Dodie McGill in Caistor. I spent a wonderfully idle week there with them. The occasional rambling late-night phone-calls of recent years revealed a sorry state of affairs, but he retained his ability to amuse so wonderfully well that they couldn't be begrudged. The sparkle in his soul still twinkled bright, he never lost his breath-taking ability to shock, and he bore a enduring loyalty towards old friends which was a pleasant surprise. Two years ago, to my intense regret, I allowed this contact slip. RIP Nick. If you only knew how greatly you are missed. Bengo. |

His ability to sing those high tenor harmonies always amazed me. A great musician with a vast knowledge of music that he was always willing to share. In later years his use of alcohol became legendary. I lost touch with him over ten years ago when he left Leeds and I moved to Oxford. To-days young musicians are poorer for not having Nick around. |

I have questions! A bit more personal info: Richie was driving us back from a gig (ca. 35 years ago. I had Nick sat on my knee in the front. I had to grasp him tightly to stop him grabbing the wheel. On arrival at his folks' place, I carried him to the door, knocked and dumped him on the mat. He started striking my head vigorously. I had the idea that restricting his oxygen supply would slow him down - he could hit really fast, but not hard, though it was still unpleasant. I placed him on the lawn, and lay across his face. He bit through a new Levi denim shirt, and and nearly bit my left nipple off. (Residual toothmark evidence remains for this to be verified by comparison with dental records.) These, and other scars, may be inspected on appointment. Applications will be treated individually, and I reserve the right to refuse access to certain injuries after careful screening of the applicant. (Age, sex, gender orientation etc.) Memories...... (in the club style, please)...Memories.... Some things stay with you all your life. |

I shared a flat with him and Mike Greenwood in our second year on Cardigan Road, which is when I started to meet Nick¡¯s musician friends and my own musical tastes (thanks very much Nick!) moved beyond the Beach Boys and Elvis. I remember very well when Hugo McGill brought Eric Bell around for the first time. Leeds had a thriving folk music scene then and Nick seemed to know everybody and his brother. As many others have said there was never a dull moment when Nick was around. I obviously had too much fun that year living with him because I had to miss the following year of studies having failed one exam. For a while I lived above Nick in the attic flat in Harehills Avenue. It was he who got the flat for me in fact. A good friend indeed when I was really in need. And of course having Nick as a neighbour meant a laugh was never far away. Steve took over the flat after about a year and I moved back over to Headingley, although I visited them both quite frequently. There always seemed to be a whole scene going at Nick¡¯s. The last time I spoke to Nick was at his 55th birthday bash over in Cas which I arrived late for and very unfortunately for me I missed the great music. I did see him play live many times especially in the early years and heard him practise a fair bit too. How lucky I am to have been a friend of Nick¡¯s. All the best, Grolly. |

Nick and Roger Knowles were there and got up and played. Smiley and I were very impressed - so much so, that when we came to make our second album in 1969, 'Country Style Tom and Smiley,' we contacted Nick to join the session on mandolin. I remember that he arrived at the North London recording studio wearing an immaculate grey suit and large matching stetson hat. When we went for lunch in a nearby restaurant he certainly turned a few heads. He did a great job on the recording -especialy his break on the song, 'Bury Me Beneath The Willow.' He also joined us on stage that same year for a big gig at the Free Trade Hall Manchester. He was smart, funny and a great musician. I rang Smiley, who now lives in Spain and told him about the loss of Nick - he was shocked and upset, as we both are. We hope there's bluegrass, folk and country music where you are Nick...so you can keep on pickin' and grinnin' |

The bemused young girl behind the bar said she didn't know they had a band on a Wednesday and she'd have to go and check - she came back with "apparently, there isn't a band booked, Sir" to which Strutt replied "There is now!" We played a few tunes, obviously with him pushing me on the Fiddle more than himself, and after a song or two from him we had a good audience. He played a few numbers accompanying other people singing various songs and his playing was, of course, first class. Many good occasions stay with you, but most that stay with me, involve Nick, and will I Never forget them. He was my mentor initially, and best friend after. I am lost without him. Joe The Bow |

One of my great memories of him was when he'd stay at my house and help me to cook Sunday dinner. We'd experiment with different culinary ideas (i.e. putting plumbs in the gravy, making a mint and apple relish), wow, my kids just loved it when Nick was around. However as I recall, there was also plenty of red wine and sometimes some fag-ash included in the recipes! But we loved those Sunday dinners, accompanied of course by more red wine. Like his cooking, Nick could also be a bit unpredictable onstage sometimes. Playing alongside him with Mel Hague (1991 & '92), after counting in our opening number Nick would just stand there looking at me, wondering what to do next! But once into the song he contributed some wonderful guitar and mandolin as he duid on the album we recorded with Mel. I'll be playing that again and recalling those wonderful times with a real character. |

As we progressed through the rain the scratchy car radio began pounding some rock that was a complete change to what we had been listening to, but faded in and out frustratingly - 'who do you reckon that was I asked the musical sage' - fuck off came the ready reply, that bass line can only be the Stones' - as it was, a track from Goat's Head Soup- knew his stuff that boy. Can't help dredging up memories, but it's good to record them somewhere. I've got buckets of them - enough to fill a book. In fact, I think I'll write one. Too late to call it "My Way", as that would have done. Paul/Sue/Brad/Wez: I heard tell of a collection of notes and jottings assembled by Nick. If these surface during the horrible tidying-up process, I'd like a shufti, as they might add something to the project. I've also got some letters from from Norfolk - rambling reminiscences which I responded to, trying to correct facts, dates etc. so I could get my own memories in order. Nick's memory, though jumbled, was incredible. A couple of recollections for now though: During the abortive stay in Newquay, we had to ford the River Gannel, on the way to the pub, holding instruments above our heads. The route took us through a municipal park. "Give me your autoharp!" barks Nick. He took it and flattened an ornamental duck, which we tried to boil on a camping stove. Excruciatingly nauseous! (They were strong autoharps then!) Nick wrote a daft banjo tune called "Gannel Romp", to commemorate the evening. Les Western at Romford Folk Club introduced us to Jimmie Rodgers, Jack Elliot, and Carter Family numbers. Nick was taken with the idea of "riding the rods", that featured in hobo ditties. We weren't familiar with American trains, so had to make do with riding on the buffers of the clanky diesel railcar from Grays to Upminster. You had also to get on and off the station undetected, running through the brakeyards. (Well, piles of pigeons in wicker boxes) You gotta live that song! Toodle-pip, dear boy! |

It was an informal jug band jam session that Roger and Nick joined in with, and Mark Peers is on washboard, his brother Jim on jug, Johnny Wall on trumpet mouthpiece / paraffin funnel, and me on kazoo / metal funnel. There may well have been other musicians out of shot - I can't remember, and it was very crowded as you can see from the pictures. |

Subject: RE: Obituary - Nick Strutt 29 Sept. 2009 From: GUEST,Paul Long Date: 08 Oct 09 - 06:05 PM Nick used to play with Jeremy myself and depending how much the fee was other Artist's would play.He also worked with a guy called Steve Dixon doing the Workies playing in between the Bingo and Raffles.He was such a adaptable person and held a Equity card and appered as a nodder (EXTRA) in Corrie sat in the Rovers and also in Emerdale Farm.I was fortunate to meet his parents and Brother Paul who were very middle class and his mother liked Jeremy and myself as we wore Pyjamas.Nick also drove my furniture delivery vehicle and was one of many muso's who worked in the shop.The last time I sang with Nick and Jeremy was at his and Sues Wedding in the late 70's singing The Manchester Rambler.Good HONEST AND HAPPY DAYS.lOOK UP AT THE SKY TONIGHT he will be having a real jam session My love and best wishes to Sue and Kids. |

I first met Nick in 1975 when helping out a friend at a residency in Leeds. Nick and I became good friends, working together as 'Strutt-Dixon Duo' for the next Three years on local Country Music Clubs, Social Clubs, and our own Residencies around the Leeds area. We also had a short TV appearance, along with Nick's 'Folky' friend, Jeremy Wolstenholme, on YTV in 1978. Nick always amazed me with his brilliant playing and his perfect harmonies, and in particular the way he could flip styles from Folk, Country, and even his amazing 50,s style Rock and roll solos (finger-picked of course, in his own inimitable way). RIP Nick, you will be missed. |

Date: 13 Oct 09 - 11:13 AM my first memories of nick were in 1979 country music was at its peak in our area.a pub in pontefract advertised the country tones so we all went along in a chevrolet i had at the time .i was on crutches "having fell of the back of a lorry .we were all very impressed by the band and particularly strutts strutt on the mandolin i asked nick if the band would play it again which they did 'this sparked up a very good relationship with my wife and family and we followed them throughout.i ended up as a country music booking agent for several clubs and pubs and got the country tones out wherever i could .then nick began to teach my youngest son to play bass guitar and even loaned him his bass to practice at home 'he drove us crackers with continuous rendition of grandfathers clock and the door is always open.i used to look after nick's car and dave rowinskis tranny van and on occasion rogers motor bike .one day nick came to the pub one afternoon armed with mandolin two guitars and a suitcase and said hey up squire how am i fixed for a few days which lasted for four years nick brought musical merriment and wit into the pub he was a good domino player but crap at darts.i could go on and on with memories going back 30 years but even as i write tears are falling RIP .nick love. tetley dave shoulder of mutton castleford |

In the early seventies, I lived near Nick in Harehills Avenue, Leeds, and have pleasant memories of Pickles and I taking Sammy, Nick's mischievous dog, for walks in nearby Gledhow Valley Woods. Sammy seemed to have developed many of Nick's traits and was forever examining every new thing he came across with great excitement and stubbornly refusing to obey any instruction. Nick's genius with music and his mastery of the instruments he played has already been mentioned but one of my warmest memories of Nick is of a different flavour. One sunny afternoon I tentatively asked Nick if he fancied a game of tennis. To my surprise, he immediately agreed. We grabbed a couple of rackets and set off for the tennis courts at nearby Potternewton Park. It soon became apparent that he was a really good player. He seemed to glide effortlessly across the ground to return the ball and all the while wearing a huge grin on his face. It turned out to be a great match. I've no idea who won - probably Nick; I had not realised that Nick was as good an athlete as he was a musician. Great memories |

Also have a brilliant photo of us dressed up in Rupert the Bear costumes for one of these sessions whilst we were raising money for charity - it got pretty hot in that get-up. Also had many excellent busking sessions in Wakefield every Friday, sometimes in sub-zero temperatures. It was a pleasure to work with such a talented musician as Nick - he even worked out how to play one of my Estonain tunes with a flattened 5th chord on guitar - I was on accordion. These fond memories will live on Nick - RIP dear boy. |

I was in the background of many of these wonderful stories. I knew him as an audience does for many years and enjoyed his wonderful humour. His musicianship was both unique and exceptional. In the late 80s I began to sing at his Jam Session, which although run very well since I still think of as his night. He encouraged me to sing and I thank him for that. I was heavily involved with researching for the NUM around the same time and we'd have good, deep, angry political conversations about the whole thing and the political trends. He cared so much about the underdog. He wrote a song for us to record called Albion Tragedy, a Glory, Glory, Hallelluya but on the plight of the UK collier. I'll bring the lyrics along tomorrow, to share. In the early 90s I remember picking him up from home, laughing with Sue and the gang of three. I remember Wez chasing Nick around with a broom once... he deserved it! What a man... what fond memories... Hi Sue, sorry I've not been in touch of late. See y'all tomorrow. |

I met him long before I started the show as presenter and with myself & mike storey it ran for 20 years. He also made a large contribution to the records I put out by Hugo Mc Gill, Doc & Chickie Williams and Tommy Collins. I recall being so impressed by his ability to switch from mandolin to lead electric guitar with ease and he worked for me in the studios as session leader. He was a talent that should have gone on to even greater things. Last time I was in contact he was working with my friend Hugo Mc Gill in yarmouth-the baby face comment on a previous posting is very true-he never seemed to get older-in looks or disposition. Fond memories of a gentle and occasionally eccentric friend. |

I have many fond memories of Nick from the 60's and enjoyed Nick and Roger's music many times. The photos sent by Paul "the Prince George Hotel" Reade show Nick & Roger playing with the Jug & Bottle Washers Jug Band in a jam sesssion at the Whitby Folk Festival in 67 or 68. Nice of Tyke to think I was Mark Knoffler its the haircut! I also have photos taken at the same event which show Jon Rennard busking with the Jug BAND on the pier. Jon Rennard also sadly passed away in 1971 Nick's passing is a great loss to music. My memories of Nick are from the 60's & 70's when I remember his humour and smiley face and determination to live life in his own way. |
