We are basking in the glow of our win over one of the most famous teams in the world. What's more, we (Kansas City Wizards) scored two real goals, while Man U simply made a penalty kick.

I haven't kept track, but my husband says that the Wizards have lost the previous 8 games. Then they defeated Manchester. heh heh

I attribute the win to the following

1. Our goalie, a handsome blonde who made some incredible saves.

2. Fast footwork by a team used to playing in the heat. (We coped with the heat by having hats and big, wet bandannas around the neck or over the head.)

3. A steady supply of magic chants and cheers from The Cauldron.

4. Manchester wore shorts that didn't fit and impeded running. Those baggie shorts - good for street cred, bad for athletics.

All told, it was a good experience. Over 52,000 people came, when 10,000 is the normal crowd. We had a good time.

One good thing for Man U is that I hear they are not the most hated team in the UK anymore, Man City are LOL :-)

Well, alan, as a fan, are you going to explain to others about 'the Emerald City effect,' as defined in the previous thread? I believe you were a contributor there.

Arthur, we noted that Man U players became quite aggressive in the final ten minutes, as it sank in that they might actually lose the game. Is this the sort of thing that puts them among the former 'most hated.'?

Although I must admit that one of ours was red-carded for a violent play. Apparently he forgot what kind of football he was supposed to be playing.

One thing I enjoyed was seeing the many nationalities and races among the crowd. Soccer is truly international.

The reason that Manchester United is the 'most hated' English team is probably because in recent years they have been the most successful. It used to be the case that you supported your own home town club, that's the team you went to see play when your Dad took you to your first game and you stayed with them through thick and thin through life in a curious love/hate relationship.

Then came TV. People started supporting just a successful team. Also Manchester United have been very successful in marketing themselves all aound the World, especially in the Far East.

I prefer cricket, me.

I have learned over the years to take pre-season's games with a pinch of salt. They are not realistic in any way shape of form of what is to come in the Premier league.

Of course they are important in relationship terms and in cementing links and connections both sporting and financial but while to win is nice, it is not an upset.

In fact Man City have lost both their pre-season games in the US of A.
So we are in good company.

Well done Kansa. I am glad that you had an enjoyable experience and to win of course was fantastic for your team.

I haven't seen any reports on the game or what the teams were etc. so I can't comment on the game at the moment.

I don't believe that Manchester United are the most hated team....this is just the media. Of course there is very strong rivalry between them and some teams and this gets blown up by the media.

United are not known as a team who play dirty or rough. So I am surprised to read your comments on the last ten minutes.

Well done and who knows we may even be seeing some of the Kansas team over here, especially if Alex Fergusson was impressed by any of your young players.

Yes, I enjoyed the game. Soccer games can drag, but then the ball goes into your team's goal, and it's so exciting! As my husband says, there is something deeply stirring about thousands of people saying the same thing (Yay!) at the same time.

As for the 'most-hated team' thing, that may indeed just be a media fancy. However, people do get jealous of those who always stay on top. And there's another reason - resentment of those who use great wealth to hog everything, including the best players. The New York Yankees are a case in point.

Have you ever seen 'Damn Yankees'? In it we learn that Satan is a Yankee fan.

Here in UK the football ( soccer) fans will probably say that satan is Alex Ferguson...lol

I do agree that success beerds jealousies.

Although Manchester United have been big spenders in their time, they have never been the biggest ones. They have usually ( but not always ) spent wisely and they have always produced great players from their own junior ranks.

I don't know if you know but this year by August 21st all Premier League clubs have to supply a list of 25 registered players.

Of this 25 only 17 can be over the age of 21. The other eight must be either homegrown players or players under 21 who have been at the club for 3 years or more.

This rule means that clubs need to be aware of the need for squads to contain young homegrown players.

This means that the top clubs will need to unload foreign players over 21 either on the transfer market or on loan to other clubs.

This list cannot be changed until January 1st 2011 when the transfer market will open for one month and then another registration list must be complied with the same rules until the end of the season.

So you can expect a lot of fringe players on the market or on loan.
