This is a good time of the year for new babies to come into the world. My twin grandsons, Akira and Elijah, turn 3 years old, today.

I am reminded of new life and youth when I look at the mountain these days. The aspen trees are just starting to leaf out and leave big swathes of that early yellowish-green of baby leaves. They make such a contrast of light and dark amongst the evergreens.

Last weekend, we went out of town a few miles to a gardening center to get some speical pansies I love. While on the way, we saw several colts, some so young they still had wobbly legs, so out of proportion to the rest of their fuzzy-haired bodies.

My "A&E" have outgrown their wobbly-legs stage and keep their parents plenty busy. When I call them and play the dulcimer over the phone, then stop, they tell their mom they want the "big music" again. So, of course, I oblige.

I've not seen them since they were 6 weeks old, when I was there for a month with them just after birth. But, they know who Gramma Kitkat is, by picture and by phone, and, somehow, when I see that new growth on the mountain, it reminds of my little darlings and they don't seem so far away.

Happy Birthday, Akira and Elijah!

Love,

GrammaKitkat

At the other end of the spectrum, this is my mother's 75th birthday! It's a really joyful day, because she had developed quite a superstitious feeling that she might not reach this day. Her mother and closest friend both died in April at the age of 74, so me mum has been quite concerned over the years about making it thru the month of April, and especially to this day! You can guess what joyful significance May day has had in her life- and today, she made it! I'll be driving her to Vermont to see her other closest friend, who was my Other Mother during my turbulent years, and we'll spend the weekend together relaxing and enjoying the best kind of company.

Happy Birthday, Peg Aldrich!

Well,well!!

Kat, send them birthday greetings from me too! Akira and Elijah are relly great looking kids and I bet they're anxious to meet the grandma behind the singing!

Allison, I know a bit of what your feels today. My parents died young and passing their ages............yeah, those birthdays had a special significance and some degree of trepidation! So Happy Birthday to you too, Peg Aldrich......and may they keep coming for many years.

You really know how to make a guy's day, Amergin. Your "aging decrepit mother" is a year younger than me, you whippersnapper.

I've just handed back my grandaughter after an evenings babysitting -didn't know it was possible to get that much yoghurt over a carpet at one sitting. She's nine months now and the best toy in all of the world is the TV remote. Les from Hull calls her Ickle Ickle Ickle Dorritt, but when she sleeps she has the face of an angel.

Poor Lonesome: I did not even know I was supposed to be old until I was 68. "OLD" is a state of mind. My son (49) wishes I would "act my age". I AM acting my age - alive and well and loving life. I am neither aging nor decrepit and I dare anyone to tell me otherwise to my face.

Dorothy, my brother just met a woman who is 95 and just received her sixth college degree and started another part-time job! My 82 year old friend was bragging about mowing her own grass the other day. She's who I want to be when I grow up, if ever.:-)

Great role models, kat! As for growing up - Who needs it! I was just as flaky at six as I am now. My 76 year old friend who can attest to that is still climbing mountains.

My great role- model mom turned 83 yesterday! She traipsed all over our land to inspect the building site before we all went out for Thai food.

My father died last year on the same day. Ten years ago, at age 70, he retired and decided he didn't have to do anything any more. Alzheimer's had him within a year of that. It finally took him last year.

Listening yesterday to this program on NHPR I was inspired to think of all the ways my DH and I "think young"- not deliberately, but just because it's the way we are. I recently took an online quiz to determine my "real age" and it's 27 (I'll celebrate my 50th birthday in Sept!)!
Attitude really counts.

These days, my attitude is gratitude.

And I am a great aunt twice. Feels really weird to be older than my mother. She died at 60.
Like Animaterra, I will never be old. It is a state of mind I refuse to accept.
