Subject: BS: Bimbos of the Death Sun From: frogprince Date: 17 May 05 - 12:40 PM Bought this book, by Sharyn McCrumb, for a quarter, partly because I cracked up to see this title in a church rummage sale. Turned out to be really funny. But the reason I had the urge to mention it here, is the opening: "The visiting Scottish folksinger peered out of the elevator into the hotel lobby. When he pushed the button marked "G", he naturally assumed that he would arrive at the ground floor....Now he wasn't so sure. Things were different in America, but he hadn't realized they were *this*different. Perhaps "G" stood for Ganymede...A pale blue blonde stepped on to the elevator...." (The hotel is largely taken up by a Science Fiction fan convention). |

Geeks (Folkies, Trekies, RPGers, Furies) from all walks of life should read this book, so they KNOW what they really look like... |

Subject: RE: BS: Bimbos of the Death Sun From: frogprince Date: 17 May 05 - 01:02 PM And yet, as scathing as the satire is, most of the "geeks" come off as decent, likeable people; which makes the book that much more enjoyable. |

Subject: RE: BS: Bimbos of the Death Sun From: frogprince Date: 17 May 05 - 01:20 PM ...and some of them are truly creepy, and need to get a life. But the "hero" of the story is a pretty hard-core computer nerd, just lucky enough to get together with a good gal who likes him as he is. |

Subject: RE: BS: Bimbos of the Death Sun From: Clinton Hammond Date: 17 May 05 - 01:50 PM I think one of the main difference is, 'Jay Omega' has hobbies... most of the other people in the book life theirs as if it was their whole life.... |
