Possibly bording on a "Folk Culture" subject, but one possibly not known to many eldsters here:

Capitalist buzz surrounds ... ... 'holiday'

Blunt efforts to make a buck off '420,' once just a counterculture affair

By Mike Stuckey
Senior news editor
updated 5:01 a.m. CT, Wed., April. 16, 2008

A once clandestine counterculture [deleted] "holiday" observed each April 20 has crossed into the mainstream this year with public gatherings that will attract thousands of participants and marketing campaigns that tout a trio of [deleted]-themed movies.

As [deleted] activists chafe, the so-called "420" (pronounced "four-twenty") celebrations "are taking on a life of their own," said Allen St. Pierre, executive director of the [deleted] who has been working on [deleted] issues for 17 years.

Click the link if necessary, to find out what it's about.

If you already know what it is, comment on the "crass commercializing" of what once was a "cultural event."

John

(It was a quiz.)

'nuff said, I guess.

Picture yourself on a seat in a diner
You're ordering coffee at 4:25
the waitress is smoking, the policeman is joking
when suddenly your order arrives

Lucy made a Pie with Almonds!

So where can I buy my 'Hippy 4-20 Day' cards then? It's only going to be a matter of time before Hallmark get in on the act....

LtS -

You might see if the "campus book store" at almost any college/university in California or Colorado (esp. Boulder) has appropriate cards. I'd guess that T-shirts (and/or shorts) would be more likely offerings though.

I'd heard of this, via a couple of 6-month assignements to Boulder CO several decades ago, but as the article said, I thought it had pretty much died out. The term seems to have originated(?) with a "younger crowd" - i.e. high schoolers - rather than with old-line hippies.

(comealonglately wannabees?)

But now we'll all know the term when it shows up in a filk song - - - I suppose.

It's also the birthday of Carmen Electra, Andy Sirkiss (Gollum), Luther Vandross, Ryan O'Neal, George Takei(Mr Sulu) and Tito Puente...

According to one urban legend, it evolved among highschoolers waiting for school to let out at 4:20 to gather and stone. I don't remember high school running that late in the afternoon. But I wasn't paying attention.

I think the Tito Puente birthday thing probably explains it.
