If anyone knows of a site that would have a biography of the man, or where i could get a copy of his music please e-mail me. I can't find anything about him. All I know is that he lived from 1911 to 1976, and is part of how Pink Floyd got thier name. I would like to use a song or two from him on my radio show. thanks for the help. Sethy

So far, all I've found is that he and Pink Anderson were both from Georgia.

This site: AMG search offers a file for download, which may be of assistance to you. I haven't downloaded myself, but the search recognizes the artist, so it's worth a try.

As far as I can recall, he was a second-rate artist who attempted to bathe in reflected glory. When he recorded in 1937, Floyd 'Dipper Boy' Council styled himself 'Blind Boy Fuller's Buddy' and, following Peetie Wheatstraw's designation as 'The Devil's Son-in-Law', he called himself 'The Devil's Daddy-in-Law'. According to Dixon and Godrich, he recorded 8 sides in 1937, 2 of which were unissued. I don't know whether any of his output is extant.

A.C., I have no idea. I don't remember hearing any of his recordings, but his name rings a bell with me also - in terms of having heard something of his somewhere. His 6 issued 1937 sides were reissued on an Austrian LP: Various Artists 'Carolina Blues (1936-1950)' HK 4006. I have little doubt that Document has reissued them on CD, given that Parth has supposedly completed his aim of reissuing every pre-war blues record. Did Council record after the war?

Floyd (from his limited recordings) sounds pretty competent, but he was part of that "cover all the bases" thing that record companies did right up til the sixties. Three of my favourite artists "covered" hit makers most of their careers. Riley Puckett, Jimmie Davis, and Blind Willie MacTell all got their "versions" of hit songs out within a couple of weeks of the originals (Jimmie Rodgers, Tampa Red etc.)

Tampa (and John Lee Hooker, among many others) even covered "themselves" under different names.

Didn't actually sign in for that one, Rick. I have all the info on at home, and will hunt it out and post what I can when I get back.

No not gold, ordinary Chrome. There were many customizations done to it, and a sort of list has developed which, I believe are equally famous as the guitar itself.

I bumped into the guy that owns(ed) it in a hotel in Chicago about 4 years ago. He just walked in with his mate, and took it out and jammed away to himself in the corner..

It's a heavy little thing, but you can feel the history in every string. I didn't even get the name of the guy who had it then, but I got a 'wee' go on it.

Did 'Dallas Rag', as I remember.

I've never considered myself overly emotional (some would disagree) but I DO consider that what these old musicians did, saved my life..or should I say "quality of life". Spending a half hour staring at Leadbelly's Stella in the rock and Roll Hall of fame, this February (while the rest of the conventioneers at the Folk Alliance were scoring the free lunch) was indeed a fine experience. Just soakin' it all up. I have very little tolerance for "folkmusic bizcrap", but I know what some of my best memories will be when I hit my death bed...having interacted (even slightly, and often indirectly) with the ones who played because they "had to".

A friend of mine got to play Gus Cannon's JUG! And busted the strap!! Holy sheeeit!
