Subject: MSOutlook - deleted only profile - help?
From: Mrrzy
Date: 14 Mar 01 - 01:44 PM

OK, dumb I am not usually; I've got calls into all sorts of helpdesks, but I bet you all would be faster...

Anyway, I just got that cable connection instead of modem, so I can now run Outlook instead of AOL mail. However, I kept getting "Unable to find profile, please delete and recreate" messages, so I deleted the only profile there, so of course now Outlook won't run at all... Can you help? How do I get a profile back when I can't get into it to do the profile? Nothing went into my Recycle bin, unfortunately...

Thanks, all!

Can you open Outlook at all? Was this an account or an identity? I'm not that familiar with Outlook, because the ISP I work for does not support it....but if it is anything like Outlook express....If it was an identity go to file and then go to identities and click on add new identities....

If this was an account go to tools and then accounts and then click on the mail tab. Click on add and then mail and then just follow the wizard.....

Sometimes identities and accounts just get corrupt for no special reason other than that it was a Microsoft product....I hope this helps....

Outlook is the favorite for spreading viruses. Why not get free Netscape?

I don't pay for outlook, at least. Amergin, I tried the Wizard, and it wants me to specify a POP3 port? And although I don't run Outlook Express, I think that what I did delete was my identity. And I can't get to the File or Tools menus because yes (or no, rather), Outlook won't open at all now. Claims to need a profile first...

Hmmm, now that is extremely odd....I looked in the Microsoft Knowledge base and I didn't find anything pertaining to your issue... what operating system do you have? Do you have the software that Outlook is on? If so you might need to uninstall it completely and then reinstall it.....

About the POP3 port it might be 110....or if you are talking about the server name you would have to look at the documentation or call your help desk.....

You might also in the end have to call Microsoft....(425) 635-7031....but I would suggest calling your help desk first....

Well, here's part of the information for "Identities" from Outlook Express. Since you can't open Outlook, you can manage identities through Address Book. To add a new identity while using the Address Book:
  • Find the Address Book icon on your Start menu, and open it.
  • On the File menu, click Switch Identity, and then click the Manage Identities button.
  • Click New, and type the name of the new identity.
  • Select the password requirement option and enter a password if you want to include a password for this identity.
Note
You can add an identity from the Address Book if you opened it from the Start menu (Start, Programs, Accessories, Address Book), but not if you opened the Address Book from Outlook Express. You can also add identities from Outlook Express.

You can change an identity's name or password later if you want.

The default name for the main identity is Main Identity - probably best to delete all and then create one with that name. For the POP3 ports, outgoing Mail (SMTP) is usually 25; and Incoming (POP3) is 110. Good luck.

OK, I'll try the 110/25 numbers, and see what happens. I'm back at work now... one thing I wonder is, if I reinstall, do I lose all existing mail that was hanging out in my Inbox or Sent Items? Can I reconnect to my Personal Address book, since I've now deleted all the info that had anyone's email address that I'd put into my PAB? I'm kind of afraid to reinstall (I got the CD from work, again)... thanks, all! And you can PM me, even if you can't email.

Right Click on the Outlook Icon. Does it give you a chance to get into properties from there?

Jon

Yes, and the properties show profiles, but when I get into Outlook it opens as if it were Explorer (I can browse my files there, I can FIND my Inbox but clicking Open just gets me to What do you want to open this unknown file with. I think part of it is that I now have that cable connection, and it's looking either for a network (which I don't have) or a modem (which I have but didn't have (and don't want) to use since I got the cable connection)... I am SO frustrated and confused! Thanks for letting me scream!

Mrrzy, it is a long while since I ran Outlook and have no reference. Is there no chance that if properties show profiles that you can't create/ ammend one from there?

Jon

I can amend it, I just can't seem to amend it in the way that will allow Outlook to run. And when I open it (the instructions say to configure your profile using the Tools menu from within Outlook), because I have no profile configured it opens like Windows Explorer and my Tools menu only has Find (as if it were WEx, which is how it is behaving) so I can't even follow the wizards' instructions. And I haven't had email for days now, right after sending a bunch of inquiries...

Oh boy...do you have Outlook Express? If you do, you might want to set up an account using that for the time being....

I can get into outlook express, yes, but can I connect it to my actual inbox from outlook? I don't seem to be GETTING mail there, whereas I was getting it from outlook...? See, the cable company gave me an @adelphia.net email, which I've told my regular email-for-life account to forward to... why isn't it coming into Outlook Express? AAAAAAAAAAAAK! And thanks!

Mrzzy, Amergin could be right - it may be that you are better off running Outlook Express - at least some of us run that package.

You should be able to import you existing email into OE using the File/Import/Messages option. I think that you will have to create a new account using Tools/Accounts/Add/Mail.

Jon

Outlook express assumes I'm paying for MSN, which what with the cable connection, I'm not... ARGGH!
