Subject: BS: Guest - what does it mean? From: dunkel_esel Date: 18 Aug 04 - 04:28 PM That is my question really - what does guest on the front of someone's name mean?? mjxx |
Subject: RE: BS: Guest - what does it mean? From: Little Hawk Date: 18 Aug 04 - 04:32 PM It means (on this forum) someone who is not yet a member of the forum. A member has a membername, such as "Little Hawk" or "jOhn from Hull", and logs in with a secret code. A member can send private messages to another member, and is also eligible to reserve a future room at the NFCFTTS for whenever they slip into total incoherency. |
Subject: RE: BS: Guest - what does it mean? From: Bill D Date: 18 Aug 04 - 04:33 PM it means technically that Mudcat has not set a cookie to allow a person to be 'recognized' when they sign on...there are certain things therefore they can't access...like private messages. Max & Jeff just named this 'guest' when they created the special services a few years ago. Some do this for a reason, some because than can't set cookies at work...etc... some simply refuse to be identified in ANY way, even by an anonymous name. |
Subject: RE: BS: Guest - what does it mean? From: GUEST,Jon Date: 18 Aug 04 - 04:37 PM It's not quite as Little Hawk explained. The Guest tag can appear for members and non-members. All it tells you is that the user is not logged on as a member/doesn't have the cookie set. |
Subject: RE: BS: Guest - what does it mean? From: Once Famous Date: 18 Aug 04 - 04:38 PM On the other hand, a Guest with no name after it is almost always a regular member who has logged off to post something "out of identity." This is usually considered a very cowardly practice and shows complete shallowness of character because they do not have the nerve to speak up and attack someone in character. In other words, they are fakes and phonies both in and out of identity. |
Subject: RE: BS: Guest - what does it mean? From: Little Hawk Date: 18 Aug 04 - 04:42 PM Ah, yes...I did not explain it fully. Even a member can log out, post as a Guest, then post as another Guest who disagrees with the first Guest. I don't doubt that this has been done. |
Subject: RE: BS: Guest - what does it mean? From: Bill D Date: 18 Aug 04 - 04:42 PM good thing you said 'almost'..we have had some trolls who never were members.. |
Subject: RE: BS: Guest - what does it mean? From: wysiwyg Date: 18 Aug 04 - 04:45 PM a Guest with no name after it is almost always a regular member who has logged off to post something "out of identity." Or someone who is posting in a hurry and/or does not realize their name will not appear. ~Susan |
Subject: RE: BS: Guest - what does it mean? From: Joe_F Date: 18 Aug 04 - 04:48 PM It also sometimes happens that a member's cookie has crumbled and he or she hasn't noticed it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Guest - what does it mean? From: GUEST,Leadfingers Date: 18 Aug 04 - 07:56 PM It all depends on where you are logged in to or even from |
Subject: RE: BS: Guest - what does it mean? From: GUEST Date: 18 Aug 04 - 07:57 PM If you see what I mean (Leadfingers) |
Subject: RE: BS: Guest - what does it mean? From: Leadfingers Date: 18 Aug 04 - 07:59 PM But IF you are NOT a member you will be Guest without a handle , unless you add a name . |
Subject: RE: BS: Guest - what does it mean? From: Sorcha Date: 18 Aug 04 - 07:59 PM And, MOST Guests are really OK.....just browsers looking for info or lyrics...then again, we get the really nasty Guests who are looking to cause trouble. I have learned to ingnore them. |
Subject: RE: BS: Guest - what does it mean? From: GUEST Date: 18 Aug 04 - 10:19 PM There's a song there. I strode thru the mudcat as a guest with no name . . . May take a little work. I'll be back. |
Subject: RE: BS: Guest - what does it mean? From: Joe_F Date: 19 Aug 04 - 05:40 PM (I once was a member, but one of ill fame.) |
Subject: RE: BS: Guest - what does it mean? From: dick greenhaus Date: 20 Aug 04 - 02:05 AM I posted this elsewhere, but it seems to fit in here: The GUEST ID was created because some posters were signing other members' IDs to their postings. |
Subject: RE: BS: Guest - what does it mean? From: ToulouseCruise Date: 20 Aug 04 - 09:36 AM I strode thru the Mudcat as a guest with no name . . . I once was a member, but one of ill fame.
