Subject: Lyr Add: THE WHISKEY'S GONE (Larry Penn) From: Jim Dixon Date: 17 May 06 - 09:15 AM Heard this on the radio yesterday and loved it. It's got a catchy lively tune. THE WHISKEY'S GONE Larry Penn My friends'll tell you that it's true: I used to tip a glass or two, And ev'ry night the flowing cup would rise to court the muse. Each libation to the gods would mean a whiskey on the rocks, Until the doctor said, "That's what you get for self-abuse." Oh, the whiskey's gone, the whiskey's gone, left me here to sing this song. Once I had a cellar full but now the whiskey's gone. I always thought there'd be enough, back in the times when I was flush, To pay the dues and pay the tax and tip the waitress too. But that's all coming to an end. Now there's not enough to spend On foolish things the way I did when this guitar was new. Oh, the money's gone, the money's gone, left me here to sing this song. Once I had my pockets full but now the money's gone. And the whiskey's gone, the whiskey's gone, left me here to sing this song. Once I had a cellar full but now the whiskey's gone. The wheel of life goes round and round. You ride it up and you ride it down. There's friends to have and love to hold and lots of things to see. I don't care how late it gets. I'd only have but one regret, And that would be if I found out that you'd forgotten me. Oh, youth is gone, youth is gone, left me here to sing this song. Once I had my whole life full but now the youth is gone. And the whiskey's gone, the whiskey's gone, left me here to sing this song. Once I had a cellar full but now the whiskey's gone. My boss-man said he'd treat me fine if I would help him rise and shine, Make him big, and make him rich, and watch the profits grow. Now he says I get too much. He won't ever make enough. He took his tools and his machines and he moved to Mexico. Oh, the jobs are gone, the jobs are gone, left me here to sing this song. Once the dinner pail was full but now the jobs are gone. And the whiskey's gone, the whiskey's gone, left me here to sing this song. Once I had a cellar full but now the whiskey's gone. I didn't come to make you cry, and I don't want to watch you sigh. I only thought you might agree that nothing stays the same. When the party's rolling on and you see morning coming on, It's time to leave them with a kiss and make them glad you came. When I'm gone, when I'm gone, you'll still be here with this song. I hope your calendar is full after I am gone. And the whiskey's gone, the whiskey's gone, left me here to sing this song. Once I had a cellar full but now the whiskey's gone. [From Larry Penn's album, "The Whiskey's Gone," Cookie Man Music Co. CM-92, available from Larry Penn's web site. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Whiskey's Gone From: Jim Dixon Date: 13 Jan 11 - 07:10 PM THE WHISKEY IS GONE, written by Hank Plank and Kirk Rundstrom, is sung by Whiskey Puppy on their album "Unleashed." From a sample: ...Well, the whiskey is gone, but the pain's still there. My baby she's gone, O Lord, she's gone and I still care. Well, I can't stand up, and I can't stand you. I'd surely leave.... THE WHISKEY'S GONE, written by Roy Wayne Gottstine and Kirk Rundstrom, is sung by Scroat Belly on "Daddy's Farm" (1997). From a sample: My baby is gone, and I still care. |
Subject: Lyr Add: WHISKEY'S GONE (from Scroat Belly) From: Jim Dixon Date: 13 Jan 11 - 07:20 PM YouTube has a video of Scroat Belly singing WHISKEY'S GONE, but they only sing this one verse twice: Well the whiskey is gone, but the pain's still there. My baby is gone, and I still care. Well the whiskey is gone, but the pain's still there. My baby is gone, and I still care. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Whiskey's Gone From: Jim Dixon Date: 13 Jan 11 - 07:40 PM I found another YouTube video of The Tennessee Studs singing WHEN THE WHISKEY IS GONE (sic). This version has 2 verses and a chorus: CHORUS: Well, the whiskey is gone, but the pain's still there. My baby she's gone, and I still care. Well, the whiskey is gone, but the pain's still there. My baby she's gone, O Lord, she's gone, and I still care. 1. Well, I can't stand up, and I can't stand you. I'd surely leave if I can find my shoe. Well, I can't stand up, and I can't stand you It sure ain't fair, there's one of me but there's two of you. 2. Well, honey, I'm a wreck, but baby, so are you. You've been that way since the day that I found you. Honey, I'm a wreck. Baby, so are you. Well, the whiskey is gone and I just don't know what to do. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Whiskey's Gone From: sharyn Date: 13 Jan 11 - 09:53 PM The song referenced above is not Larry Penn's "Whiskey's Gone." Penn's goes "Whiskey's gone, whiskey's gone, Left me here to sing this song: Once I had a cellarful, but now the whiskey's gone." Larry Hanks sings it, but may not have recorded it -- I don't have a recording of it, but I should -- it is a great song. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Whiskey's Gone From: GUEST Date: 15 Jan 11 - 07:54 PM The one I was looking for is the one that goes: CHORUS: Well, the whiskey is gone, but the pain's still there. My baby she's gone, and I still care. Well, the whiskey is gone, but the pain's still there. My baby she's gone, O Lord, she's gone, and I still care. It had a lot more verses though. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Whiskey's Gone From: babypix Date: 16 Jan 11 - 11:21 AM Larry Hanks did NOT record this song, but performs it regularly. It is always a very popular request number and great sing-along. By the way, for those of you NOT familiar with the very wonderful OTHER songs of Milwaukee's Larry Penn, he has made several albums of mostly original music, which are thought-provoking, plain-spoken, and with haunting melodies. Penn still performs occasionally, so check various midwest festival rosters. He is also associated with Bruce Phillips and The Rose Tattoo. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Whiskey's Gone (Larry Penn) From: GUEST,Steven Strauss Date: 12 Nov 12 - 10:29 PM I'm producing Larry Hanks and Deborah Robins' third duet CD, and Larry Penn's "The Whiskey's Gone" is my favorite song in the collection - so far. The lyric is great - "it's time to leave 'em with a kiss and make 'em glad you came." It's so right for the Hanks oeuvre. I got to produce their first two CDs of duet, too, and I recommend them for happy listening to one and all. "No Hiding Place" and "Old Times." It's like catching maple syrup from a tree; the hard part is not messing up what nature got right in the first place. |
