I see that the latest bit of madness is the fact that all cigarette smoking scenes in the "Tom and Jerry" cartoons are to be removed!!!!. What next? Will the scenes in the Looney Tunes cartoons where Wile E Coyote uses dynamite and other dangerous items be removed in case they give ideas to terrorists?

Tom and Jerry were a pretty inferior example of cartoonery by the Hanna Barbera outfit, which never never came close to the imagination, range of characters, and outright multi-level humor of Warner Brothers creations.

The Simpsons lampoon Tom and Jerry regularly with the ultra-violent "Itchy and Scratch".

Nothing like pounding down a critter with a wooden mallet while making sure its lungs are in good working order.

Yeah, let's do it.

Ban Donald Duck for his physical and verbal abuse of Huey, Duey, and Looey.

Ban Pepe le Peu for the derogatory nature of the premise that skunks stink.

Ban Goofy for the obvious references to people with learning difficulties.

Ban Sylvestre and Tweety Pie for the anti cat bias. Cats are people too, you know. Ask mine, they know they're people.

In fact, while we are at it, let's just ban all cartoons. It's wicked to mock people, and I just can't understand why this blot on the morals of the human race has gone unchallenged for so long.

What a load of half baked, wooly minded, ultra PC bollocks!

There are so many important things in this world that the PC brigade SHOULD be attacking, that you have to wonder whether they have totally lost the plot, or are just on the same intellectual level as the aforementioned Goofy.

Bowdlerization is alive and well. They cut out the "extreme cartoon violence" some time back. They're f**king cartoons! That's the better place for this kind of stuff--kids can tell the difference between cartoons and "real life." It's the movie and TV stuff that is confusing as hell.

It IS possible to buy the 'toons in the original form.My dau. bought a DVD set of two last Christmas. The only thing I would do is edit which ones my grandsons are allowed to watch. Some of the oldest are very stereotypical about blacks, esp. and I wouldn't want my mixed race grandsons to see them until they are older and can take them in context to the times. Other than that, editing them as Fiolar says has been done is sacrilege, esp. when one sees what is put out for children, today! Perhaps they should go after the parents who smoke in front of their children, first...surely that has much more influence than a classic cartoon!

Not so fast, Don! I swear I've seen Roadrunner cartoons where Wiley is no longer shown hitting the ground when you watch him fall from a cliff. Can't have our sensitive children being traumatized by that. Better to let them play Doom in their rooms all day.

Each to thier own I suppose. Warner Brothers seemed to be best at coming up with characters I disliked intensly. Tweety Pie should have been eaten by Sylvester, Road Runner should have finished off splatted and Bugs Bunny should have had the life pummeled out of him.

I can't say H&B have never achieved the same effect, eg. Lambsy should have been served up with mint sauce but I really liked Tom & Jerry. With that they achieved something none of the Warner Brothers examples I'm thinking of managed - both "hero" and "villan" were likable.

I remember that Tom & Jerry cartoon. Tom was doing an immitaion of Gary Cooper in one of his western roles. Does this mean we have to go take the cigaret scene out of the Gary Cooper movie also to protect our little darlings?

Meanwhile our miiitary hardware, which is marvelous at killing people, is glorified in cartoons, comics, movies, video games...

I notice too, that there is a great deal of smoking shown in Hollywood films...partly because it is historical, after all, and partly because the cigarette companies have a deal of some kind under the table with Hollywood.

So it seems incredible silly that they would go after smoking scenes in old cartoons.

Never mind the smoking, what about the owner of the house, sometimes shown from hem-level down, with distinctly 'coloured' legs, and a deep-South vice saying:
"Thomas, is dat you in de ice-box again dere Thomas?

Definitely non-PC

I think either continue to show them uncut, or show only those episodes which the small-minded PC brigade do not find offensive.

I can just imagine the playground result:
"Psst, wanna buy a DVD of the banned Tom & Jerry cartoons?"
