I wish I was broadcasting this day---and had not pre-recorded my program for this Sunday (Traditions--WFDU) because of my absence to attend NERFA. Many is the time his glorious voice is aired on the program---and, on my other program--Sunday Simcha we have had requests for his material. Emphasis on his "Yiddish" pieces such as Moor Soldaten and Kadish.

To me--the greatest basso ever and on top of it a wonderful and driven human being.

I second what Bill said.

I would also add that without his contribution to modern music the world would be a much poorer place today.

If I could sing like anyone, it would be like him.

No matter who sings "I am Climbing Jacob's Ladder," I always think of
Paul Robeson. It is a shame that the country as a whole did not better do by him.
BTW, I am not for sure on this, but I don't think that Moor Soldaten is
in Yiddish, but just garden variety Deutsch.

Has anyone heard the tribute CD put out by Eric Bibb and his father, Leon? I wonder what it's like.

Do have a read of the biog. written by his son, Paul Jnr., if you haven't already. It was just the first volume - I don't know if vol. 2 is out yet. Paul Jnr once said that the movie industry had made various approaches about making a bio-pic, but the family/Estate had rejected most proposals so far made as they failed to emphasise his political beliefs and avtivities.

Would any of the current crop of actors have a big enough presence to play the part?

Ejaculation praecox, Shambles. Yor've come five months early.

This man really deserves a birthday thread, but I'd prefer to read it on his birthday, April 9th.

Wolfgang (judging the worth of the information, not that of the poster)

When was it the last time you have simply acknowledged a correction, Shambles, and said something like I stand corrected instead of making a smart ass remark?

It would have been apropos if 9 November actually was the birthday of Paul Robeson, All-American football player, because on that date his alma mater won perhaps the greatest victory in its long history, 28-25 over Lousiville.

One can imagine him looking down and smiling at young men of European and African extraction playing the game without feeling the need to kill one another. And maybe he got an extra laugh out of the winning field goal being kicked by Jeremy Ito, whose ancestors weren't either.

I know that "Sanders of the River" was about imperialism and domination but "The Canoe Song" does it for me every time, I'm also a softie and "My Curly Headed baby" is beautiful. Mustn't forget "Old Man River". Actually mustn't forget lots of the songs he recorded.

Betsy - take it easy, or at least leave your arse out of it.

One Yiddish song I've been told PR did record (but I've never heard) is "Im Kampf" (which I think was a Bund song) - there's a version by The Klezmatics.

Anyone know it, or can point to a source?

Paul Robeson,was a great singer.
When I was about sixteen, and had missed my last bus on a saturday night, I had to walk home 4 miles through creepy woods and countryside, so I used to sing Paul Robeson songs, in as deep a voice as I could manage, to scare away trolls etc. Theres a Man Going Round Taking Names. The house I live in,.

America didnt treat him very well. [thats AMERICA FOR ME],one of the lines of the House I live in, A touch ironic methinks.Dick Miles
