I don't know how long this link will be good, but here it is.

newspaper account

This certainly changes the attitude I would have towards law enforcemnt officers testifying in court, if I were on the jury.

I hope the cop who went against the trend gets some justice, too. And, I hope the DEA agent was fired. The article didn't say.

Yeah, well, that's the "War On Drugs" a.k.a. Waron Common Sense fer ya.

To quote Phil Ochs:

"We're fighting in a war we lost
Before the war began"

Billions of dollars pissed away to no effect.

I imagine he'd been sampling some of the stuff they'd confiscated.

I did a Google search on the victim's name. Looks like the networks are not picking up on this. Funniest thing!

The settlement amounts might look big,but when you consider the lawyer's cut, the medical bills, and the cost of future care, they are not big. And of course, nothing will ever compensate for that damaged brain and body.

Rotten jumped-up bastards!

I find it sad, how little interest there seems to be in this thread. Perhaps the facts are too clear, and there's not enough room to start a fight.

Kat, I fear that the cop will never get justice. Kansas City, Kansas is known for its corruption.

Bobert asserted:

DEA = Dumb Egotistical Assholes...

They have always been thugs...

I worked in court for the US District Court for 36 years, frequently observing, hearing the testimony of, and talking to DEA agents outside of court. I have to contradict Bobert, when he says that about DEA agents generally. I'm sure there are some who fit Bobert's model, but that kind of assertion about a whole workforce of professionals is unwarranted, and not true.

Of course, I have to admit that I never met them from "the other side of the fence," as it were (don't know what Bobert's experience is), but based on what I do know of them, the assertion is grossly wrong as to the great majority of DEA agents.

I found this to be the most worrying part of that story. Individual cops will do bad things. But this would tend to indicate that there's a systemic culture of corruption in this police force:

"Seifert, the detective whom the judge praised for honest work that got him "castigated by his superiors, by the prosecutor, by the DEA," paid a high price, the ruling states.
Seifert was forced into retirement before his retirement benefits were fully vested, the judge said. He was even denied a routine commission that would allow him to work as a security guard."

Maybe he now has the basis for a cause of action.

Well, yeah, Ucn-Dave, we prolly do have much different perspectives on this... I mean, I'm an ol' hippy and lotta my friends done time 'cause yer "professional" buddies done busted 'um...

BTW, having a helicoptor buzzin' over yer house at about 40 feet ain't all that relaxing... Them DEAers 'round these part reoutinely do that kinda stuff... Heck, they done it to me and I don't grow nuthin' here on my farm... Not even close... They wanta go up into the mountain and buzz around then fine... Let 'um... But just to buzz someone's farm 'cause ya' got long hair is creepy...

Bobert, you got long hair, so you must be a hippy. Thus you will have long legged beautiful naked hippy chicks running around on your property. That's what they are buzzin' ya to look at....

Well, hell, f-troupe... I reckon you'd be on to somethin' 'cept I'm an ***old*** hippy and that means that the "long legged beautiful naked hippy chicks" is way in my past... And, truth be known, that's a good thing... Them girls got ol' hillbilly in lotta trouble back then... They mighta looked like hippy chicks but few of 'um had some serious alterior motives, if ya' get my drift...

Now, I'll have to admit that the P-Vine is a "looker" but not that kind... I mean, she don't go out nakked... Bugs bite... Me??? Yeah, occasionally... Shot a dumb deer one mornin' stark nakked... This was before we put up deer fence around all our gardens and it about 6:00 in the mornin' an' I wake up to the P-Vine shakin' me and yellin' "Wake up" and the ol' gal has my rifle in her hands... Mean, I'm thinkin', "If she wanted to kill me then why wake me up to do it", right???

So she says there is a deer down below about 300 feet and it's eating some stuff she had just planted - she likes her flowers - and so she ***orders*** me to get out of bed (nakked) and go out an' shoot the sumabich... And so I stumbled outta the bedroom door onto the deck, took aim, fired, dead deer and then it was time...

...to get back in bed an' get another hours of still nakked sleep...

Cops in general have a "I'm better than you" mentality....they may be all right by themselves...but when they get together, even with one other person they do all they can to get in your face. They are the dogs of the corporate class, and as such should be treated as such.

All humans tend to do that ... some are good, some are bad.

Just go ask a deer .. they'll tell ya ... :-)

Cops are humans.

People choose careers for various reasons. I would have expected those who choose the police or similar enforcement functions to tend to have a perspective favourable to enforcement and authority, and to see themselves as in charge of the rules or being the authority.

That's true Richard ... many people do choose the police force because they are attracted to the authority aspect ... and many people do choose it because they honestly believe they are going to contribute some goodness to the community.

I myself have experienced both aspects from the police.

Well, if the DEA would spend more time on coccaine and herion and less time on pot then I might have an easier time accepting what they do... Seems to me that enforcement of coccaine and herion laws is more dangerous and, thus, way too much effort in busting pot farmers and dealers, who BTW, tend not to be violent... At least domestic pot farmers... I'm not talking about Mexico or Columbia where violence is more ingrained in pot distribution...

I mean, let's get real here... Using precios resources to fly helicopetrs over peop-le's farms lookin' for half a dozen plants is misguided... A large operation can be spottec from higher altitudes with infa red imagery... Harrassing innocent people with helicopters is real Talibanish...

Here's something I read somewhere, and I think it's true.

When it comes to human goodness, most of us are on a bell curve, but law officers are bimodal.

It means that for non-cops, a few people are very bad, a few people are very good, and most of us are about average. But among law officers, there will be a lot who are very bad and a lot who are very good, and fewer people who are just average.

Why? Probably because people who are just average don't accept the danger and stress of a cop's job.
================
Uncle DaveO, thanks for your observations, which are based on experience. I believe that what you see and what happened in this terrible case both gibe with the 'bimodal theory.'

What's shocking about this case is how many people were in on it.
McCue, 2 fellow DEA officers, KSKS personnel. An editorial yesterday said that poor Browning, seriously injured, was in jail for two days. There was no charge against him, and no record was made of any of the events. Sick sick sick!
