My scariest novel yet takes place outside Beijing in the lonely northern desert. A level 4 bio lab has been working on weaponizing mRNA to cause mitochondria to shut down, which would lead to the death of all cellular animals, from people to bacteria.

Oxidative phosphorylation is a process in bacteria and mitochondria in which ATP formation is driven by the transfer of electrons from food molecules to molecular oxygen. It involves the intermediate generation of a proton gradient (pH gradient) across a membrane and chemiosmotic coupling. What the mRNA weapon does is interfere with the oxidation by preventing ADP from recharging ATP. Even the Krebs cycle is compromised.

By shutting down the energy factory of all weapon-exposed cells, death is irreversible. The weapon comes in two versions: an aerosol and a longer-lived active powder.

While transporting the powder weapon by truck convoy, a sandstorm causes a collision of several trucks, releasing the powder into the winds of desert sands.

Hijinx ensue...

Being mostly albino, I've always been pale. In my youth if you drew a word on my forearm with anything, a minute later the word would appear with the letters outlined in pink. Now that I'm older I get little dark red hearts less than an inch long. They are probably just broken capillaries. When Trump gets this, he has a huge bruise. Yesterday a smaller heart appeared on my arm but this time it had 2 white dots for eyes and a nose. The damn thing looked just like a teddy bear head.
So what's the deal with pink hearts and teddy bears? I'm not gay but they could be mistaken for tattoos sending the wrong signal. Fortunately these hearts fade in about 2 weeks.

That is the oddest sounding circulatory condition or skin issue I've heard about in a long time! My main skin issues are occasionally nicking myself when cooking. My daughter does blacksmith work and last week lit the furnace thing when the regulator was turned way high and singed some hair off of her arm. She's lucky she didn't get anything else.

My skin is thinning with age and I bruise more easily. I use skin cream to keep the skin moist, but it still happens. So...I've given up paraskiing, body surfing, and several other things I never used to to do. Those purple dots still appear. I'd wear chain mail but that would only acerbate the bruising. Maybe I'll get a job with ICE so I can get that armor stuff free!

A greater mystery is how a physical object can defy inertia from our perspective, leaving the possibility that space-time can be sped up enormously in a localized area. What looks to us like an immediate right hand turn or acceleration could be in a time-warp region that would allow plenty of time to elapse for a maneuver.

It's like using Sherlock Holmes' reasoning that what is left despite improbability may be the key to understanding.

I found an orange golf ball in the front yard groundcover when I gave it a last mow of the season yesterday. It had me wondering how many golf balls Rap finds in his yard during the course of the year, or if he ever goes out at night to retrieve lost balls to sell by the bucket to golfers later. A small stable income in that, one would think.

I was taking out the garbage when I stopped short because I saw a young deer standing where I leave the cans. I spoke to him for 10 minutes while he listened intently. I had the thought he was an orphan since he hadn't been taught to fear people. When I came within 10 feet he sauntered off to join his brother in the next yard.

DEI decimation has made the DC region full of interesting characters who have fabulous tales to tell of their time in various agencies.
One of the most fascinating tales comes from an ex-CIA analyst, Rodigio Enendo. He said that his first name was mispronounced as Rodriguez and was let go for having Mexican heritage by a DOGE idiot. His work had been ignored for unbelievable reasons that were more spooky than logical.

His research had gone back to Donald Trump's father who acquired a simple necklace called a scapula while in Europe from a disreputable underground antique dealer. He was told the necklace had been purchased as an indulgence by the church in Prague and was stolen and acquired by Louis the 16th. Fred Trump didn't believe a word of it but had a run of good luck that ended when he gave the capula to his 16-year-old son Donald.

When Donald wore it under his shirt at sporting events, he always won, and when he didn't, he lost, so he became hopelessly superstitious. As a stolen talisman that was intended for its owner to go to heaven, the longer it remained above ground, the more powerful it became. Donald was convinced that success and impunity were guaranteed, so he ventured into impossibly risky endeavors.

Rodrigio was never cleared to have field agents obtain Trump's scapula necklace, but just recently, Donald lost the necklace while touring the demolition of the White House Wing. What lies ahead for Donald without his centuries-old indulgence is up to him; however, the playing field will be more level. Meanwhile, all construction has stopped at the White House, and a top-secret reward has been divulged to certain workers.

I have my reservation that Rodrigo's tale was more Scotch than truth, but we shall see.
