Subject: In Memoriam From: Joe Offer Date: 03 Nov 11 - 08:02 PM It was suggested that we should have one thread that gives tribute to Mudcatters and other musicians who have died, dedicating one message per person to honor people who have made a contribution to music, especially folk music and the folk community. Each message would include links to other threads about that person. Seems to me somebody started a thread like that quite some time ago. Can anybody find it for me? Thanks. -Joe-

Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 21 Dec 11 - 11:04 AM Every so often Mudcat hosts an obit thread. Always these celebrate the life of some-one who is sadly missed and it is often poignant to read the tributes posted. But life rolls on. This is shown clearly by the inexorable way that the obit thread moves down the listings until it finally takes residence in the Mudcat archive. Sometimes it will be refreshed. Sometimes it lies forgotten by all but the original poster. That has always struck me as sad. A while ago now the idea of a Mudcat Roll of Honour was suggested. Many Mudcatters felt this was a good idea and so…. here it is (with a name change as suggested by Bonnie Shaljean). Bradfordian has personally dedicated the new Mudcat CD set (This is Us) to all our dear departed Mudcatters. I would ask you to be patient as names are added. I would also like your help to fill out the list! However, be aware of the very few guidance notes! …..This thread is for those people associated with the world of folk music in its widest sense. …..The people on the thread must have had an obit thread running on Mudcat. …..We only go back 24 years to 1996. If anyone else would like to start a thread for those many and wonderful people who shared their talents with us before then, then I'm sure that will be appreciated! Any post on this thread should only be a name and a link to their obit thread please. If you want to discuss or add anything else, please use the thread running at http://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=141258 Many thanks, Peter |

Particular thanks to Dave the Gnome for reminding us all of Gary Wright from Swinton. |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Lonesome EJ Date: 16 Jan 12 - 10:58 AM Peter, thanks for doing this. I recognize a lot of names of people I have spoken with here through the years, and some I honestly didn't even know had died and was often surprised about how long they had been gone. |

Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 24 Sep 14 - 03:24 PM Now that is an idea, Maeve! We could inspect all the preschools and nurseries and have a whale of a time seeing how musical all their pupils are. We would have to check Flickr as well, I guess. There are some burgeoning talents on there too.....the possibilities......endless! Peter |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 31 May 15 - 06:25 AM I have added Art Thieme to the thread today with a heavy heart. We have a wealth of his contributions in many places but miss the man himself. My condolences to Carol and Chris and all those who know and love him. RIP Peter |

Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: ChanteyLass Date: 07 Oct 16 - 10:11 PM For most of the departed named in this thread, there is a separate Mudcat thread devoted to that person. Anyone can look at those threads. I am grateful that Waddon Pete is putting those names together here. It reminds me of a war memorial which lists the names of those departed from a single town. |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 30 Dec 18 - 06:46 AM Sadly we need to add Leo Pola to the roll today. Known to Mudcat as MMario, he was one of our cornerstones. Sleep well. RIP Peter |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 19 Mar 19 - 04:18 PM I was very sad to hear that Caroline Paton had passed on. Although I didn't know her well I treasure the letters and notes she sent me over the years. She was a lovely lady. Kathy Rollo and I never did meet, but she did much for the world of dance. I have added them both to the roll today. RIP Peter |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 21 Apr 19 - 07:10 AM I have added Cathy Barton to the Roll today. She was a lovely singer and musician. The partnership of Dave Para and Cathy Barton was one of the best. She will be sadly missed. RIP, Peter |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 18 Feb 20 - 03:39 PM I have added Joseph Shabalala to the roll today. He was a central figure and vocalist in the South African group, "Ladysmith Black Mambazo" who sang a wonderful selection of songs in Zulu and English. His singing was an integral part of their music and he will be greatly missed. RIP Peter |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 14 Mar 20 - 05:46 AM I have added Dave Cooper to the roll today. He was involved in music and unaccompanied singing for most of his life performing as a child and progressing through the well documented folk club "Phoebus Awakes" at the Rising Sun in Catford, South London and The Robin Hood Folk Club in Nottingham. He was a good mate for more years than I care to remember. RIP Peter |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 24 Mar 20 - 05:25 PM I have added Julie Felix and Eric Weissberg to the Roll today. Both fine musicians who contributed much to folk music. Plenty of hits on YouTube to give you a flavour of their contribution. RIP Peter |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 12 Apr 20 - 07:25 AM John Prine has been added to the roll today. Do look him up, play some tracks and enjoy his contribution. RIP Peter |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 19 May 20 - 03:15 PM It is the case that often names are added to this thread far too soon. Micca's name is one of these. He was a cornerstone of Mudcat and will be missed by us all. RIP Peter |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: rich-joy Date: 01 Jul 20 - 08:02 PM Pete, I think Colin Dryden (1943-1988), whose songs and life have been under discussion on Mudcat quite regularly, has maybe missed out on an OBIT!! Though he was born in, and died in, Bradford, Yorkshire, most of his singing/performing was done in Australia. Though I met him and regularly saw him perform, I didn't know him well and I'm not sure that I'd be the best one to write his Obituary for Mudcat!! However, his niece has written of him on 30July2013 and also the late Dermott Ryder of him and his music (published on on 17March2020) and both are posted here : https://naomidryden-smith.tumblr.com/ What do you think can be done?? Rich-Joy |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: GUEST,keberoxu Date: 01 Jul 20 - 08:50 PM You know, Rich-Joy, if Mr. Dryden died in 1988, then his death and obituary preceded the existence of Mudcat in the first place. I mean, how long has Mudcat been around? 35 years, maybe less? So it has sense that he would have no Obit thread at the time he died in a forum that did not yet exist! Having said that, maybe a Colin Dryden appreciation thread would be appropriate? |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: rich-joy Date: 01 Jul 20 - 11:19 PM That's True, Keb! I'd forgotten that small point, haha!! I guess coz he was one of those characters where his death had been "presumed" a number of times in Australia (alcohol/drugs loomed large, I think, alongside his genius), that Oz Folkies stopped believing he might have actually gone. I know my partner and I were surprised when quite some years later, Colin's earlier death back in England, was finally and absolutely confirmed! So yes, perhaps an Appreciation Thread may be the way to go?? ......... R-J |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Seamus Kennedy Date: 20 Jul 20 - 11:40 PM Mudcat stalwart Murray MacLeod has passed away. RIP, |

Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: GUEST,Teefy Date: 25 Nov 21 - 11:40 AM Thank you for adding her, Pete. Unfortunately, I also saw a thread mentioning the passing of Dick Fewtrell, another member of Vulcan's Hammer, made back in 2010. The thread. - Teefy |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 06 Dec 21 - 11:36 AM Derek Elliot and Bill Staines have been added to the roll today. Two excellent singers from two different sides of the Atlantic united in their love of song and sharing songs with other people. They will both be greatly missed. |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 06 Jan 22 - 10:28 AM Clive Pownceby has been added to the thread today. A sad loss for folk music. He was an avid supporter of folk music and especially "The Bothy" folk club. RIP |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 16 Jan 22 - 10:42 AM Dave Howdon, Ashling Murphy and Chris Wenham (Phot) have been added to the roll today. All sadly missed. Do look at the Youtube links for Chris. It is always hard when people we know reach the ends of their lives. In Ashling's case her life was brought to a close far sooner than it should have been by the actions of an attacker. Here's hoping the police are successful in finding the person responsible. RIP |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 21 Jan 22 - 09:45 AM John Durrant, Nick Havell and Hana Horka have been added to the roll today. Three completely different characters with different srories to tell. John was an organizer, Nick a performer and opera fan and Hana Horka a member of the Czech folk band Asonance. Sadly Hana died needlessly because she was unvaccinated during a Covid pandemic. RIP |

Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 31 Jan 22 - 10:11 AM I have added Tony Barrand and Norma Waterson-Carthy to the Roll today. Both superb performers. They will be missed. RIP |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 01 Feb 22 - 09:26 AM I have also added Tony Barrand to the listing for England as that was where he was born and many of the songs he loved came from there. Also added today are Jimmy and Vincent Campbell, Donegal fiddlers and David Surette a guitarist, mandolinist and bouzouki player from New England. All have listings on Youtube that are worth seeing. RIP |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 12 Apr 22 - 10:59 AM Brian O'Rourke has been added today. Do have a look on the Internet as there are some lovely videos and articles about him there. He was associated with the club for 40 years and also MC of the club from 2014 - 2020. Good MC's are hard to find. Thanks for your contribution over many years. |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 19 Apr 22 - 11:37 AM Gail Needleman has been added today. A special person and an expert based in the Bay Area. |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: GerryM Date: 23 Apr 22 - 12:16 AM I noticed Trish Santer listed in the post dated 08 Jan 12 - 02:20 PM and headed "Those who ought to have a Mudcat Obit Thread...but haven't!" Are there two Trish Santers? A person by that name sang at our Mudcat Zoom singaround just earlier this week. |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 23 Apr 22 - 11:25 AM An investigation is proceeding Gerry! |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: GUEST,Peter Laban Date: 23 Apr 22 - 11:40 AM There is probably more than one Trish Santers, there is also one user, from Scotland, active on the session.org. Note he addition of her name to this thread was ten years ago |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Tattie Bogle Date: 28 Apr 22 - 10:48 AM No, I am one and the same Trish Santer, alive and kicking, aka Tattie Bogle, living in Edinburgh Scotland, both a Mudcatter and active on thesession.org. I've never been too secretive about my Mudcat nom de plume, so when I joined thesession.org, I just used my real name. I think maybe what happened is that, as Tattie Bogle, I supplied a list of names of Scottish musician friends who had not been mentioned on the In Memoriam thread, then must have signed it with my own name - which has then been included in the list of the sadly departed!! I'm definitely still here! So maybe you could remove my name from that list? (See post on 8th January 2012.) I checked on Facebook and there is a Trish Santer Helms in New York, but I don't know her, and don't think she's a Mudcatter. Keep up the good work, Pete Waddon! |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 28 Apr 22 - 11:26 AM Thanks for clarifying that Tattie. I have now deleted your name from the database. Your explanation sounds convincing! Thanks for the heads up! All the best, Pete |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 01 May 22 - 11:02 AM I have added Geoff Pickles, Eric Pressley and Judy Henske to the roll today. Three people with completely different involvement in the world of folk but all successful, well thought of and sadly missed. My condolences go to all those who know and love them. RIP |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 13 May 22 - 09:49 AM I have added Ed Trickett to the roll today. A very talented performer. That says it all. Check him out on YouTube. RIP |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 23 Jun 22 - 09:20 AM Alex Beaton has been added to the roll today. A very enthusiastic and talented folk performer. Check out his website. Rest in Peace. |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Ebbie Date: 26 Jun 22 - 12:22 AM It’s been a long time since I read this thread in its entirety. The emotion known as ‘bittersweet’ may have been coined for this kind of experience. I toggled between moist eyes and grateful smiles as I read. Thank you for your dedication, Waddon Pete. |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 26 Jun 22 - 11:05 AM Thank you Ebbie. Pete |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: gillymor Date: 26 Jun 22 - 12:05 PM Please note the passing of the fine guitarist Dennis Cahill. Thanks. |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: GUEST,Guest TF. Date: 26 Jun 22 - 08:34 PM Apologies for my error in the skiffle group thread. Sad to say Shirley Bland passed on in Holland on 4th May 2022. |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 27 Jun 22 - 11:23 AM I have added Colm Mac Lochlainn and Dennis Cahill to the thread today. They are from opposite sides on the Atlantic but united in their love of Irish music. Do check them out on the web. There is are some excellent clips on there to give you a measure of their contribution to the world of folk music. |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 14 Jul 22 - 11:03 AM John Howson has been added to the roll today. John was a great collector of East Anglian traditions, songs and music making, especially hammer dulcimers. He was also a step dancer, stalwart of Sidmouth Folk Festival and researcher into the tradition as well as being the driving force behind "Veteran," the traditional folk music label. He will be greatly missed. RIP |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 03 Aug 22 - 10:42 AM I have added Grant Baynham, Nic Burdett, Graham Maisey, and Archie Roach to the roll today. Four complete opposites united by their love of music. They will all be missed. However, they leave behind a legacy that is well worth investigating. RIP |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 25 Aug 22 - 09:54 AM Another entry to the folk session in the ether today. Juel Ulven has been added with a sense of loss. Another good folkie gone. RIP |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 17 Sep 22 - 11:01 AM Jim Post and Paul Sartin have been added to the roll today. Two outstanding singers and musicians from either side of the Atlantic. Do have a look at the websites and information posted regarding these two fine folk musicians. RIP |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Felipa Date: 19 Sep 22 - 05:04 PM Mick Softley, English singer songwriter, died in 2017. I learned one of his songs, Gold Watch Blues, from the singing of Donovan Leitch. I don't think there is a tribute to Softley on Mudcat but it's difficult to find out as the search engine hasn't been functioning well for ages. I didn't find anything searching via the filter. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mick_Softley |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 24 Sep 22 - 10:24 AM Today I have added Hector Gilchrist and Lis Saya to the "In Memoriam" Roll of Honour. Hector was a gifted singer and player from this side of the Atlantic and Lis was a talented, enthusiastic and dedicated singer, player and organiser from the USA. Do look at their respective websites. There is a treat in store. RIP |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Geordie-Peorgie Date: 24 Sep 22 - 12:43 PM Heya! Wadding Pete! Where did you get the info on Hector from? |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Geordie-Peorgie Date: 24 Sep 22 - 04:59 PM Heya! Sorry if it sounded like I was doubting you, Waddon Pete! I just found it such a shock until I remembered that he always looked thirty years less than his allotted span! So very, very sad! GNU Hector! |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Ebbie Date: 25 Sep 22 - 04:44 AM Thanks, Pete. |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 13 Oct 22 - 10:56 AM I have added Bill Sables to the roll today. (Finally managed to find a slot when Mudcat wasn't "down"!) He was a great part of the folk scene and will be sadly missed. |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 24 Oct 22 - 10:39 AM Mary McCaslin has been added to the roll today. A wonderful singer and multi-instrumentalist. Thanks Mary. |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 07 Nov 22 - 10:25 AM Today has seen the addition of Colin Irwin, folk journalist and Elizabeth Stewart, fine Scottish singer. Two people who did a great deal for folk music in their different ways. They will both be missed. RIP |

Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: bbc Date: 16 Dec 22 - 12:05 PM Thanks, Pete! Barbara |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 04 Jan 23 - 11:48 AM I have added to people to the roll today, Austin John Marshall and Kevin Mitchell. Close in name but not in style although both were great exponents of their craft. Sadly I missed Austin back in 2013 so didn't include him then, but have rectified that error now. As his obituary says, he was pivotal in the folk revival of the 60's and 70's and was married to Shirley Collins at one time. He is also well known as the author of the poignant song, "Dancing at Whitsun". His style was mainly contemporary whereas Kevin Mitchell was a fine traditional singer with many superb songs in his repertoire. Both will be missed. |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Felipa Date: 04 Jan 23 - 04:04 PM Thomas Guthrie (USA) died in 2016 https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=124599 Gabby McFarland died in Nov. 2021. https://rip.ie/death-notice/gabie-mac-farland-derry-city-derry/513148. Gabby wasn't well known, but would have sung at sessions/song circles, sometimes solo and sometimes with her husband and/or children. Husband Jim McFarland is well-known in Irish and British traditional singing circles. I see there are some Mudcat threads announcing dates he was performing in folk clubs in England; in 2008, 2011, 2013, and 2018. I've heard him once on zoom since Gabby's demise. |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 12 Jan 23 - 10:49 AM Seamus O Beaglaioch (aka Seamus Begley) has been added to the roll today. As always, there are some lovely examples of his art on the Internet. His music will live on. RIP |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Felipa Date: 12 Jan 23 - 04:16 PM I don't think anyone wrote at Mudcat when Irish flute player Mick Hand died in July 2020. Many people wrote tributes to, and memories of, Mick Hand at The Session website https://thesession.org/discussions/47308 |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Felipa Date: 14 Jan 23 - 08:54 AM another Irish melodeon great, Johnny Doyle, died just a day ahead of the better-known Séamus Ó Beaglaioch. https://gript.ie/jimmy-doyle-imithe-uainn-a-musical-giant-from-gneeveguilla-has-died/ I've copied that article into the Music of Sliabh Luachra Mudcat discussion thread |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 16 Jan 23 - 11:06 AM I have added Les Barker to the roll today. Master of the humourous poem and a master of the written word. You will be missed but your work lives on. RIP |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 16 Jan 23 - 11:10 AM I have also added Johnny Doyle and Mick Hand to the "Those who ought to have a thread but haven't" list. Thanks Felipa. |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Felipa Date: 16 Jan 23 - 11:49 AM although Johnny Doyle doesn't have an obit thread, Pete, I did copy his obituary into the Music of Sliabh Luachra thread https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=155350 on 14 Jan 2023. While looking for the information, I also came across a more general article about Sliabh Luachra music which mentioned Johnny, so I added that as well. The obituary is above that article. Alf Mac Lochlainn (Ireland 1926-2018) is missing from the list. He is commemorated on the same thread as his son, Colm (1951-2022) who did make the list. I went to an Andy Irvine gig a couple of months ago, and one of the songs Andy sung was Alf's "My Son in Amerikay". Thomas Guthrie (USA 2016) has a Mudcat thread but hasn't made the In Memorium list yet. https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=124599 |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 21 Feb 23 - 11:37 AM I have added Guy Benson the the thread today. You can listen to his singing and playing if you follow the links that Joe posted on the obit thread. He will be sadly missed. RIP |

Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: haiqu Date: 21 May 23 - 06:33 AM Acoustic muso Alan Russack who was well-known in both Sydney and Sweden, where he lived for many years, is also gone. He had a great love for South American music, especially Jobim. |

He was one of a kind and he was a regular guest at my folk club where he was deservedly popular. He had a unique way of delivering his songs and material and also produced many books and broadside ballad sheets. He was very generous with his printing and gave me many of his products, '...as I'm having a bit of a clear out!" Farewell John. |

Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 19 Oct 24 - 10:51 AM Hello Peter, Thanks for the information on Cyril O'Donoghue. I have added both the people you mentioned to this thread. I was already aware of Francis but usually wait awhile before adding so that there is enough information posted to help me give a fair representation of the artist. All the best, Pete |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 19 Oct 24 - 11:07 AM I have added Francis McPeake and Cyril O'Donoghue to the roll today. Two giants of Irish folk music who travelled the world bringing their music to a wide and appreciative audience. There is much to see (and hear) on the web. May they rest in peace. |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: GUEST,Peter Laban Date: 19 Oct 24 - 11:33 AM Thanks Pete, I wasn't sure how often you check the forum for obits so added Francie McPeak here, before the thread dropped off the page. I hadn't posted about Cyril before but decided to add him to the post at the last minute, his death was unexpected and a shock. Especially his singing contributions would have been appreciated on Mudcat. Sometimes it's hard to decide if someone is outside Mudcat's remit or the ouside the interest of readers here. I also didn't mention Charlie Lennon here who died during the summer. He's much missed by the traditional music community in Ireland. And I don't want to be the one who post obits all the time, even though I think it's important to acknowledge the people leaving us. |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Date: 30 Oct 24 - 11:14 AM I have added Dave Earl (aka Breton Cap) who has died this month. Although his death was expected we all hoped it would be later rather than soon. He will be much missed. |
Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: GUEST,Jim Martin Date: 31 Oct 24 - 07:05 AM https://youtu.be/W16a-AaNGY4 Here he is in fine fettle with his son & daughter. |
