Have you noticed that babies have a built in compass. It doesn't align North to south though, it aligns sideways across the bed.

Bloody good idea, magnetic babies, just stick them to the fridge door when not in use.

Bert
You should not have sex with a compass, that is what happens

Then again, I guess it is better than having sex with a lawn mower. I guy could lose a hand changing that kids diaper

Babies aren't stupid. Going crosswise means it's harder to roll off.

As the joke says - that's why they give the old men in nursing home viagra. So they won't roll out of bed.

So what if you have twins then? Do they cancel each other out, like putting the north and south poles of a magnet together, and thus push themselves out of bed?

daughter number two (at 21months) still breastfeeds and ALWAYS ends up sideways, often casually kicking her feet up and down on my head. For a toddler she certainly is quite long occupying the main part of the bed while my wife and I are stuck just on the edges..

the other rule is when helping them put their shoe on they ALWAYS stick out their other foot (than the shoe you have in your hand)

Bert, how did you arrive at this pearl of wisdom?

Cows don't align any way except with their asses into the wind. That way the rain doesn't blow into their eyes.

Sheep do the same, but in a tighter group so they shelter each other. I've seen them shelter from a thunderstorm under one tree, all tucked in close to each other radiating out from the shelter of this tree. From the road it looked like a circle of sheeps bums, but from the top of the tree it would have looked like a shawl spread out or one of those lacy Van Dyke collars so beloved by Gentlemen in the 16th Century.

There was an article in the paper last night about a study someone just did. Studied images of cows all over the world and saw that 67% of the time, they are oriented N-S. This is rather strange when you consider that there are 180 ways they could orient themselves, and so the probability that they will choose one particular direction is less than 1%, (This assumes that an E-W orientation, for example, is the same as a W-E, and so it cuts 360 degress in half to 180.)

My theory is that they are facing the North Pole, watching for Santa Claus. They have a lot of patience.

I read somewhere that it is better to sleep with your head north and your feet south.

Uhhhhhh - that is too much for my poor directionally challenged brain to comprehend.

I do know that both dogs and cats arrange themselves in positions most likely to make me uncomfortable.

Uh, cows, and just about every animal that can lay its head on or near its ass, sleep with their ass to the wind. Not because of the rain... the rain would actually be in it's eyes in that position. They do so because they then have their nose to the wind... and to the rain. That way, they can detect predators upwind and detect rain that may mask predetors. Once they detect a predator upwind, they are in position to spring into running in the opposite direction of predator approach.

I used to hunt Virginia White Tailed Deer to feed my family. This is one of the first lessons I was taught.

Sorcha, it is from observing my two grandkids. At first I thought It might be a North/South alignment but when we moved the bed to another wall they still insisted on sleeping crosswise.

From Petr's post above, there is a possibility that it might be some kind of cuckoo instinct whereby they kick weaker siblings out of the bed; at the same time as positioning themselves where they are more stable and less likely to be kicked out themselves. And all the while maintaining access to their food source.
