Subject: Lyr Add: THE DINGHY SONG (Ruth Wallis) From: Jim Dixon Date: 28 May 08 - 12:42 AM You can hear Ruth Wallis sing THE DINGHY SONG at The Internet Archive: THE DINGHY SONG by Ruth Wallis Sailing, sailing, over the ocean blue, Davey's got a dinghy, so he paddles his own canoe. He's got the cutest little dinghy in the navy And all the girlies know that it's so. The cutest little dinghy in the navy, They love to watch him go "Heave ho!" Just for a lark, he went and painted it green. It's the only green dinghy that the girls have ever seen, The cutest little dinghy in the navy. Heave ho! Heave ho! Now, other sailors take their girls canoein'. It's an old, old, navy technique, But Davey gets more girlies with his dinghy, And what is more, it never springs a leak. Every time it rains, his little dingy gets wet, But Davey says it's waterproof, so he doesn't fret. The cutest little dinghy in the navy. Heave ho! Heave ho! Now I have seen a hundred other dinghies, And I'm qualified to remark, He's got the cutest little dinghy in the navy. Why, I would know it even in the dark. It isn't very long and it isn't very short. It's built for speedy action and it gets him into port, The cutest little dinghy in the navy. Heave ho! Heave ho! It isn't very narrow and it isn't very wide, But you should see that thing go in and out with the tide. The cutest little dinghy in the navy. Heave ho! Heave ho! To keep it from the girls, Davey says, is very hard. Why, it isn't even safe down at the Navy Yard, The cutest little dinghy in the navy. Heave ho! Heave ho! The Admiral has a flagship and the captain's got a cruiser; But Davey's got a dinghy. It's a lollapalooza! The cutest little dinghy in the navy, and the old Admiral is heard to say: If he had Davey's dinghy he would always feel springy. He'd ride the WAVES night and day. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Dinghy Song (Ruth Wallis) From: GUEST,Big Al Date: 06 Jan 09 - 04:04 PM There was another version of this song played on Kroq. It ended with," When Davy gives me something it fits, snug as a bug in the rug." Does anyone know the singer? |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Dinghy Song (Ruth Wallis) From: GUEST,JazzCat Date: 02 Sep 09 - 03:38 AM Unfortunately the Internet Archive is gone. I've been on a hunt for this tune for a while now. Boy, if anyone has a copy, I'd sure be grateful. Please e-mail me at oneqtcat ( at) juno dot com I would like to score and program a MIDI file for the tune. I met a vivacious retired theatre & stage performer who still performs this tune when she can find a pianist who has even heard of the tune! She's pushing 90 and is almost completely deaf but she still can sing! And, she still has a spark in her eye, and can strut her stuff, as much as her aging body will allow. JazzCat >^..^< |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Dinghy Song (Ruth Wallis) From: Jim Dixon Date: 03 Sep 09 - 11:10 AM The recording is alive and well at The Internet Archive. There was something wrong with the link in my post. Try this one: http://www.archive.org/details/RuthWallis That should take you to a page called "Collected Works of Ruth Wallis." On that page, the song is called "DAVY'S DINGHY (double-entendre party record) (1953)." You can play it by clicking on the song title on the right. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Dinghy Song (Ruth Wallis) From: Jim Dixon Date: 03 Sep 09 - 11:16 AM Whoops! I just realized THE DINGHY SONG and DAVY'S DINGHY are not the same song! Although they are similar—lyrics will follow. THE DINGHY SONG is there, too; it's just a little farther down the list—Number 31. |
Subject: Lyr Add: DAVY'S DINGHY (Ruth Wallis) From: Jim Dixon Date: 03 Sep 09 - 11:46 AM Who knew Ruth Wallis wrote two songs about dinghies? Here's the other one: DAVY'S DINGHY Ruth Wallis CHORUS: Of all the dinghies that sail the sea, Davy's is the only one for me. 1. Ever since we met, my life has never been a bore, 'Cause when he leaves the ship, he brings his dinghy to the shore, And then we meet there on the sand and, confidentially, His dinghy does more good upon the land than on the sea. 2. Some gobs climb the riggin' fast and some just climb it slow, And some gobs when they climb the riggin', holler out "Heave ho!" Some just sail right into port and sail right out again, But when Davy drops his anchor, you can tell the boys from men. 3. Davy really knows the proper way to steer his craft. There's one sailor really knows his fo'c's'le from his aft! He tells me that a sailor's life is really a delight. For years he slept on waves, he says; that's why he rocks all night. 4. Davy says his dinghy has been in so many ports, He's loved a lot of ladies and he's stormed a lot of forts. You'd think with just a little dinghy, it could not be done, But Davy mans that dinghy like a man behind a gun. 5. Now other sailors bring me things from Spain and Biarritz. Some are too big and some are too small; the darn things just don't fit, But Davy has the knack; that's why I give him such a hug, 'Cause whenever he gives me something, it fits snug as a bug in a rug. 6. Someday we'll wed and then I'll keep him under key and lock, And also we will keep his little dinghy in my dock, But Davy's so attached to it that this is what he said: "I hope I never lose my dinghy; I'd rather lose my head!" |

Subject: Lyr Add: ADMIRAL'S DAUGHTER (Ruth Wallis) From: Jim Dixon Date: 02 Mar 17 - 12:40 PM ADMIRAL'S DAUGHTER As recorded by Ruth Wallis. [INTRO] Sailing, sailing, over the ocean blue! The admiral's daughter is after Davy and his dinghy too. [1] She first saw Davy in a big parade, A show of strength that the navy made. There was subs and cruisers and all the best, But Davy's little dinghy stood out from the rest. [CHORUS] Ship ahoy, sailor boy! Don't you get too springy. The admiral's daughter waits down by the water. She wants to ride your dinghy. [Last line varies.] [2] She's built as big as a battleship. Davy says he'd have to make two trips. Let her go ride with the other guys. His dinghy's no good for a gal that size. [Chorus ending:] She's out to grab her dinghy. [3] She's made up her mind that he must get caught. His dinghy has gotta sail into her port. She won't let it rest 'cause she knows the score. Oh, you can tell she's had a dinghy before. [Chorus ending:] She's out to grab your dinghy. [4] She ruined her first mate, I understand. He wound up with his anchor draggin' in the sand. Since Davy heard she's headed his way, He's got a life-preserver on his dinghy night and day. [5] Davy thinks she'll try sabotage, So he's devised a little camouflage. Ev'ryone says it's a real slick trick: He's got it painted red and white like a peppermint stick. [Chorus ending:] She's out to grab your dinghy. [6] Just got a flash from the naval base: The big maneuver, it just took place. She finally grabbed him by the pier. He got in too deep with his landing gear. [TAG] There was quite a battle; there'll be hell to pay, 'Cause he sank his dinghy singin' "Anchors Aweigh!" |
