Yesterday was real busy at the park where I patrol, but by 7:30, everyone was gone. I sat in my patrol car on the banks of the Delaware and watched the sun go down and then sat in the dark and listened to the crickets and other night critters for about an hour. There was no traffic out on the main road, just the sounds of nature. It was beautiful. Summer is basically over abd the Delaware Valley is all mine for a while. I'd forgotten how nice this place can be when the tourists are not around.

Today I pack, and tomorrow I'm headed up to Mass. and Maine, which I hope the tourists have abandoned, too.

There's no real point to this thread. I just wanted to say how nice it is to have peace and quiet for a change.

Yeah. Went for a tour of the local Conservation Area/campground and found it with campers still but very quiet, and not a single employee anywhere. We were looking to pick up my kid's last paycheque of the summer (she's already at school), but apparently they take Labour Day real seriously. It was also very quiet on the nearest highway as if everyone went home early or stayed home to start with.

For that matter, it's very quiet in the neighbourhood now.

What a wonderful idea.... peace and quiet. If only my brain would settle down and give me some!

I'm longing to go and sit on top of a particular hill in Dorset with maybe my bestest friend, and just watch the sun go down. It's been far too long since I visited that hill......

when i checked into the campground that i stayed at last night,
the ranger at the gate was just closing up, it was on her last
day of work there for the year.

unfortunately, fire season is still in full swing..
no let up until the rains -- which will not be here
for several more months!! (and the first ones usually
are accompanied by lightning and the resulting fires
that it brings)

This is the first day of my favorite part of the year in Vermont - the three weeks or so beginning the day after Labor Day and ending about the time the rush of leaf peepers hits. The best weather of the year (most of the time), and we have it for ourselves!

Thanks for a beautiful *picture* and breath of calm quietude. Much needed in these days of frenzied news and natural destruction.

We are fixing up an old 1960's Shasta caravan/trailer for me as a writing retreat...it will be my private space for creating/meditating/etc. Of course, I love to get out into nature and sink into the depths of the forest's *hush*, but here at home I am in sore need of a place of respite and can hardly wait for it to be ready! Best of all the Shasta was free!

On Sunday, it was cold and the sky was a blanket of grey. rain was falling off and on all through the day. I put the heater on and stayed in, curled up on the couch, reading, later hand-sewing in front of the tv (good shows on too, including one about Nefertiti and Akhenatun). it was a beautiful, gentle, peaceful day.

now, i am off to work - but have had some more of that quiet time, and the birds have been chirping.

I was having a peaceful morning until Max (the one with the dodgy hips and dubious hearing) dragged a rat in that was almost as big as himself.... it had been dead some time and left in our garden...... the rat may be at peace, but the house no longer is!

Sometimes peace and quiet is right in front of your nose. This summer, my wife, our son and grandson and I built a large, screened-in gazebo in our yard. We built it for a cookout we did for the Gospel Messengers, some other musician friends and family. The day of the cookout, Ruth and I were busy all day, cooking, serving and making sure that everyone was enjoying themselves. That is, when there wasn't music going on that I was involved in. I didn't get to sit down once in the gazebo, and Ruth only had a couple of minutes.
The days following the cookout were busy with cleaning up and putting stuff away, and dealing with all the things we'd put off while we were working on the yard and gazebo (I also built a bird sanctuary, feeding area with two small waterfalls.)

Three or four days ago, we realized that the dust had cleared, and we could finally gome some peace and quiet of our own. While most people were busy having cookouts or visiting with family and friends on the Labor Day weekend, we were by ourselves. These last few days, we've taken our supper out to the gazebo, and have enjoyed the silence, the early evening soft breezes and beautiful days. In the morning, while we have breakfast, we sit and enjoy watching the birds and squirrels in the bird sanctuary. These quite, peaceful times are very nourishing and strengthening. It's beautiful to have a retreat, right at hand. We don't need to climb a mountain or drive to the seashore. There is peace and quiet at home. Sometimes, it's more a matter of just turning off your head for awhile and enjoying the silence. Not that peace has to be quiet. I often find great peace just sitting, relaxing and listening to music. Peace and music works for me...

That last post of mine was supposed to go just once, but it happened that the 'Cat slowed to crawling speed. I hit tthe submit button a few times and then just turned the damn thing off when nothing had happened after 10 mins.... seems they were trapped in the ether and got delivered after all.

I looked at the rat again. 21 inches long that bugger was..... bigger than the kitten!

If anyone can tell me where the 'off' switch is for my head, I'd be grateful, because the voices are starting to get annoying again.

HUH!! Some of them butterflies are evil bastards!!! They get milked by ants who protect it all it's caterpillar life, and then the bastard eats their larvae! Mean things!!
