According to Merriam-Webster, it's a contraction of "God be with you."

Off the top of my head, to me it means something along the lines that "we may be parting for now but will be meeting again."

Though those who aren't Christian may have some problems with all of its words, I think this song best exemplifies what "goodbye" means:

Fortunately we don't have to not use words just because they've been co-opted or attributed to religions (of any sort). It's like calling facial tissues Kleenex. After a while the name stops being someones or some group's exclusive property.

Adios & Adieu mean substantively the same thing.

traditionally in Ghana,we donot have the word "goodbye" in any of our local languages. rather we say to someone "don't keep long in coming".
