I've just returned from my brother's place in Brooklyn where plans are being finalized for the annual Bark! The Herald Angels Sing in Prospect Park. I managed to smuggle out a copy of this year's songbook of holiday parodies, dedicated to their canine buddies. Their organization is called FIDO (www.fidobrooklyn.org). This special event will be holding forth this Saturday, December 16th, from 8 to 9 AM, in the Park. Admission is free.

Here is an example of what you'll hear:

Dog Rest Ye Merry Dobermans
(Words by Jane Landis)

Dog rest ye merry doberman's and do not jump or bray,
For there will be some tasty treats left over here today;
Some pumpkin pie and turkey skins are sure to come your way --

Oh, tidings of table scraps and bones,
Biscuits and scones,
Oh, tidings of table scraps and bones!

So be on best be-hav-i-or until the meal is through,
Then hopefully we'll feel so full we'll share a bite with you
But only if you do not whine or lick my plate or drool --

Oh, tidings of table scraps and bones,
Biscuits and scones,
Oh, tidings of table scraps and bones!

And once we eat we'll go outside so you can run so free;
You'll romp with all your canine friends; you'll make a poop and pee,
And dream about tomorrow's meal of leftover good-ies --

Oh, tidings of table scraps and bones,
Biscuits and scones,
Oh, tidings of table scraps and bones!

FIDO is always interested in canine holiday parodies from other parts of the world, and I'll be happy to forward any contributions you might offer. And for every contribution, I'll match it with one more from the FIDO songbook.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Charley - Have you got any of Les Barker's books ? He has a ridiculous number of canine orientated parodies and poems ! The sad
lament "Dachsunds With Erections Can't Climb Stairs" comes to mind !

Charley,

Les Barker's the first person I thought of on seeing your thread.

He's a genius, especially on dogs, Guide Cats for the Blind is excellent.

http://www.mrsackroyd.com/   don't do the blue clicky thing, but look at the website.

Les Barker's songs would certainly be welcome here. I'm sure his bark is not as bad as his bite.

Here's another contribution from the songbook:

Winter Wonderland
(Words by Jane Landis)

Chew toys ring, are you listein'?
In the park, droll is glistenin',
A beautiful sight, we're happy tonight,
Walkin' with our dogs in Prospect Park.

Gone away
Are the lease laws;
Here to stay
Are all four paws;
They run and they play
And catch kongs all day
Walkin' with our dogs in Prospect Park.

Later on, we'll conspire,
To avoid the muck and mire;
Right after a rain
Wet paws are a pain
(But we're) Walkin' with our dogs in Prospect Park.

I would hate to see this thread curtailed!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

"Joy to the world
Cuz cats are here.
They fill our hearts with joy.
Let every one
Prepare them food.
And let them eat their fill,
And let them eat their fill,
And let, and let, them eat their fill."

Thanks, Linn. I'm sure that FIDO has some appreciation for feline holiday songs as well.

Here's some more hair of the dog:

O Come All Ye Faithful (breeds)
(Words by Jane Landis)

Come all retrievers, Labradors and goldens,
O come mutts and pure breeds to off lease hours;
Come sniff the tree trunks,
Find a leg that you can hump;
O come let us enjoy it,
O come let us enjoy it,
O come let us enjoy it, Prospect Park!

Howl in elation,
The Park's like a vacation,
For canine and human both
We run, sport and play;
Grass for the sniffin',
Ponds to dip our paws in,
O come let us enjoy it,
O come let us enjoy it,
O come let us enjoy it, Prospect Park!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

The other day we saw a little book a friend had just bought, called "Christmas Carols for Cats" or some such - it was parodies of carols not dissimilar to the ones above, but to do with cats rather than dogs. Just thought people here might be interested - you can probably find it on Amazon.

Scrump, that may be where I got the feline "Joy to the World" -- but my sources are at home and I'm, alas, at work.

Praire Home Companion also published a charming book of kitty songs, most of which were parodies.

Work hardly, everyone!

You know how I applaud your dogged efforts...

I do wish you feline fans would start your own thread. Just because I have a calico cooncat purring in my lap while I type this post doesn't mean that I won't flame the next kitty litterer.

The Christmas Song (Canine Version)
(Words by Chris Borris)

Pigs' ears roasting on an open fire,
Shi Tzus nipping at your nose;
Yuletide carols being howled by a choir
And folks dressed up like Malamuts;
Everybody knows sausage and some milk bone treats
Help to make the season bright;
Tiny pugs with their eyes all aglow
Will find it hard to sleep tonight;
They know the Big Dog's on his way;
He's loaded lots of chews and kibble on his sleigh;
And ev'ry mother's pup is gonna spy
To see if sled dogs really know how to fly;
And so I'm offering this simple phrase
To dogs from one to ninty-two,
Altho' it's been said many times many ways,
"Merry Christmas to you!"

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Prospect Park is big. Where is the performance, at the ampitheater? Or at the boat house? Or the skating rink?

SRS-

Yes, Prospect Park is larger than life. The FIDO folks and their furry friends do their thing at the Western end of the park, across from the Ethical Culture Center. Nothing is done under cover.

Here's a link to their website for more info: Click here for website

The FIDO folks have just won a Citywide complete legal victory against some malcontents who didn't want to share the parks with dogs off their leases. The hours for dogs off their leases are generally 7 to 9 AM, and owners are responsible for controlling their dogs with voice commands or treats, and picking up the doggy poop. The City agreed that FIDO was doing an excellent job of educating dog owners on their rights and responsibilities and that their staff would revise any out-of-date rules to reflect that reality. Meanwhile the malcontents are still free to roam the parks at random, pillaging at will.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

"...dogs off their leases..." You mean, they're no longer renting apartments??

(I think you meant to say "leashes"...)

Grrr-y Christmas!
