THIRTEEN FLORINS (ON THE BAR)
The poppies have been laid,
The sermons have been made,
The bold November sun it sinks afar.
And we've bent our heads in prayer
For those we buried there,
Who left these thirteen florins on the bar

The Man at the Nore

1)Now my father was the keeper of the Eddystone light
And he dallied with a mermaid one fine night
From this union there came three
Two of them were fishes and the other was me

2)Now when I was but a bit of a slip
I was put in charge of the Nore lightship
I kept me lamps in very fine style
Doing of the work according to Hoyle

Chorus..after 2nd and last verse only
.Oh the raging Nore, the rolling Nore
The waves they tumble o'er and o'er
There's no such a life to be had on shore
As the one that's led by the Man at the

3)Well, one night when giving me wicks a trim
And A- Singing of a verse from the Evening Hymn
I spied by the glow of my signal lamp
The form of me mother looking rather damp

4)Just then me mother cried out, "Ahoy!"
And I saw that me mother was a-sitting on a buoy
That means a buoy for the ships that sail
And not a boy that's a juvenile male

5)Says I to my mother, Now how do you do
And how's my father and my sisters two
She says an orph-i-an you are
You've only got one sister and you've got no pa

6)Your father was drowned with several pals
And digested by some cannibals
Of your sisters, one was cooked in a dish
The other one is kept as a talking fish

7)Well, at that I wept like a soft-eyed scamp
And the flood of me tears made the waters damp
Says I to my mother, Won't you step within
You look awfully wet, just to dry your skin

8)Well me mother says "I likes the wet, my dear"
So I offered her a seat on me Bosuns chair
My mother, she looks at me with a frown
And said "It's owing to my nature that I can't sit down"

9)Says my mother, "you must never go on shore
But always remain the Man at the Nore"
Then I caught a flash of a glittering scale
And that was the end of my mother's tale(tail)

10)Now in deference to her maternal wish
I can't visit my sister, the talking fish
So if you sees her when you gets on shore
Give her the regards of the Man at the Nore...chorus

22 November On this day in 1963, John F Kennedy, president of the United States, was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, during the run-up to the 1964 presidential campaign.

"He Was a Friend of Mine" is a traditional folk song in which the singer laments the death of a friend. Ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax was the first to collect the song, in 1939, describing it as a "blues" that was "a dirge for a dead comrade." The Byrds issued a reworded version of the song in 1965, with lyrics that lament the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Wikipedia

"Abraham, Martin and John" is a 1968 song written by Dick Holler. The song itself is a tribute to the memory of four assassinated Americans, all icons of social change: Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy, and Robert F. Kennedy. It was written in response to the assassination of King and that of Robert Kennedy in April and June 1968, respectively. Wikipedia

Maybe there is a thread for Thanksgiving songs, but anyway today I heard COLONOSCOPY SONG performed by The Rural Characters and it includes the line about the nurse, " I knew she did this for a living, Like a turkey for Thanksgiving". The song has some far better rhymes than that one, though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awNXYlqCspA

Currently showing on Mudcat are a couple of songs about not pardoning the turkey at Thanksgiving

Albuquerque is a turkey and he's feathered and he's fine
Albuquerque is a turkey and he's absolutely mine
He's the best pet you can get yet, better than a dog or cat
And he wobbles as he gobbles and he's awfully proud of that
Albuquerque is a turkey and he's happy in his bed
'Cause for Thanksgiving dinner, we eat egg fu yung instead.
(tune Clementine)

and there are a couple of other lyrics re NOT killing a turkey on that thread     /mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=52924&messages=9

1.Trees in November look sad and bare
Branches are empty , leaves on the ground
Foliage fallen and it carpets the earth
Scattered and drifting without a sound.

2. Life can be hard , our hopes fallen down
Sometime like trees we desolate stand
Forgetting the sap is still in the trunk
Renewing hope by an unseen hand.

3. Life like the branches is complex , we find
Intricate patterned against stormy sky
Branches though silent they reach upward still
Like praying hands to God lifted high.

4. merciful God who created the trees
comfort the hearts of those who weep
give them the grace , to reach out to you
the leaf that falls, to the love most deep.

My own song . TREES IN NOVEMBER   line inspired from a line in Watership Down

6 November On this day in 1917, the third battle of Ypres ended when British and Canadian troops captured Passchendaele Ridge.

The high ground of Hill 60, south of Zillebeke, was created in the 1850s by spoil dumped from the cutting for the railway line between Ypres and Comines. At 3:10 a.m. on 7 June 1917, 990,000 pounds (450,000 kg) of explosives went off under the German positions, demolishing a large part of Hill 60 and killing c.?10,000 German soldiers between Ypres and Ploegsteert. Today Hill 60 is a World War I battlefield memorial site and park.

7 November; on this day in 1783, the last public hanging in England took place at Tyburn (now Marble Arch in London) – forger John Austin was the last to die there.

Jack or John Hall...was born of poor parents who lived in a court off Grays Inn Road, London, and who sold him for a guinea at the age of 7 to be a climbing boy...Finally, having been taken in the act of burgling a house in Stepney, he was hanged at Tyburn on 17 December 1707. The Sound of History by Roy Palmer

A broadsheet of his Gallows Confessional was put to the melody of Captain Kidd, previously executed for piracy in 1701. Jack Hall's song was made popular in the 1850s with the adaptation Sam Hall by English comic minstrel, C.W. Ross. everything.explained.today

Ross’s ‘dismal Psalm-tune’ - also used by Walter [Pardon] - has been on the go for at least three hundred years and has done service for such songs as William Kidd, The Praties They Grow Small, Aikendrum and the hymn Wonderous Love. Reg Hall Voice of the People - Volume 17.

They drove me up Tyburn hill in a cart, in a cart,
They drove me up Tyburn hill in a cart,
They drove me up Tyburn hill, that’s where I made my will.
The best of friends must part; fare you well, fare you well,
The best of friends must part; fare you well.
Jack Hall sung by Walter Pardon, Knapton, Norfolk, 1976.

8 November; on this day in 1932, Franklin D Roosevelt – promising a “New Deal” for America – swept into the White House in a landslide in the US presidential election.

In May 1941, Woody Guthrie wrote a cycle of songs for the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) – a prestigious New Deal project intended to improve the infrastructure in the Columbia River Region. The 26 songs included  ROLL ON COLUMBIA,    GRAND COULEE DAM,    PASTURES OF PLENTY,  and    THE BIGGEST THING THAT MAN HAS EVER DONE . Guthrie earned a total of $266.66, which worked out to about ten dollars a song.

Has anyone suggested Loiudon Wainwright III's "Suddenly It's Christmas."

Suddenly it's Christmas, right after Hallowe'en
Forget about Thanksgiving, it's just a buffet in between
There's lights & tinsel in the window they're stocking up the shelves
Santa's slaving at the North Pole in his sweatshop full of elves

There's got to be a build-up to the day that Christ was born
The halls are decked with pumpkins and ears of Indian corn
Dragging through the falling leaves in a one-horse open sleigh
Suddenly it's Christmas seven weeks before the day

Suddenly it's Christmas, the longest holiday
When they say 'Season's Greetings', they mean just what they say
It's a season, it's a marathon, retail eternity
And it's not over 'til it's over and you throw away the tree

Outside it's positively balmy, in the air nary a nip
Suddenly it's Christmas, unbuttoned and unzipped
Yes, they're working overtime, Santa's little runts
Christmas comes but once a year and goes on for two months

Christmas carols in December and November too
It's no wonder we're depressed when the whole thing is through
Finally it's January; let's sing Auld Lang Syne
But here comes another party shaped just like a Valentine

Suddenly it's Christmas the longest holiday
The season is upon us, a pox, it won't go away
It's a season, it's a marathon, retail eternity
And it's not over 'til it's over and you throw away the tree
No it's not over 'til it's over and you throw away the tree
Iat's still not over 'til it's over nd you throw away the tree
