Subject: BS: Is My Obsolesence Obsolete? From: Rapparee Date: 01 Aug 10 - 09:57 PM I mean, I don't know squat about Windows 7 and don't want to. I can do a chmod 700 in Unix. I know how to drop to the C drive and enter "format". I can load and fire muzzleloading weapons. I can use a sword to good effect or start fire without matches or lighters and things. Are these still obsolete skills or what? |

Subject: RE: BS: Is My Obsolesence Obsolete? From: olddude Date: 01 Aug 10 - 10:06 PM Well I guess I am right there with ya cause I do the same and practice it .. so we must both be obsolete ... but heck if the big one drops we will probably be around a little bit longer for knowing how to do such. |

Subject: RE: BS: Is My Obsolesence Obsolete? From: Melissa Date: 01 Aug 10 - 10:08 PM If your obsolesence is obsolete, mine probably is too..and I hate to think of how that would affect me in the near future. |

Subject: RE: BS: Is My Obsolesence Obsolete? From: Bill D Date: 01 Aug 10 - 10:23 PM I see that redundant rhetorical questions are not obsolete... *sighing with Joe* |

Subject: RE: BS: Is My Obsolesence Obsolete? From: Rapparee Date: 01 Aug 10 - 10:27 PM Yeah, that's why I started wondering about my obsolesence...everything else has been discussed. |

Subject: RE: BS: Is My Obsolesence Obsolete? From: Bill D Date: 01 Aug 10 - 10:35 PM Not quite 'everything'... VCRs, prune Danish, brandy kegs on St. Bernards and Boy Scout merit badges have not been covered. I'm sure there must be 2-3 others. |

Subject: RE: BS: Is My Obsolesence Obsolete? From: Joe Offer Date: 01 Aug 10 - 10:42 PM So, what's the big deal about prune Danish? I've never been able to bring myself to try it... |

Subject: RE: BS: Is My Obsolesence Obsolete? From: mousethief Date: 02 Aug 10 - 12:56 AM In what way are Boy Scout merit badges obsolete? |

Subject: RE: BS: Is My Obsolesence Obsolete? From: Joe Offer Date: 02 Aug 10 - 02:16 AM Alex, If you didn't get enough merit badges to make Eagle Scout, merit badges don't mean much. And mine are all mildewed now. -Joe, 2 merit badges short- |

Subject: RE: BS: Is My Obsolesence Obsolete? From: Gurney Date: 02 Aug 10 - 03:12 AM In the depths of the Cold War I had such thoughts. I decided that the first survival scheme would involve learning to tan leather and skins with locally available materials. That was the first thing that enabled humans to leave the tropics and survive in the temperate regions. |

Subject: RE: BS: Is My Obsolesence Obsolete? From: Bill D Date: 02 Aug 10 - 10:21 AM I didn't say merit badges are obsolete... I said they are on the list of things that haven't had entire threads devoted to discussing WHETHER they are. Like...ummm...ex Boeing workers. |

Subject: RE: BS: Is My Obsolesence Obsolete? From: Rapparee Date: 02 Aug 10 - 10:49 AM When I was a Boy Scout (Star...I took one step on the "Eagle Trail" and said, "The hell with this!") I was a den leader for some Cub Scouts. As such I got to wear a green rope on my shoulder. My friends told everyone that it meant I had an awful case of VD. Home distilling of medicines has also not been discussed. |

Subject: RE: BS: Is My Obsolesence Obsolete? From: Bill D Date: 02 Aug 10 - 11:20 AM I was in scouts for about 2 years after Cub Scouts. Turned out I got into what what was humorously called "Coulsen's Eagle Mill" in Wichita. He was famous for turning 'em out, and had little use for boys who didn't go for the big prize. I was an...ummmm.. 'underachiever' who just wanted some fun and experience, and the pressure to "set goals" was too much. Then I got a paper route, and it ate up most of my spare time. |

Subject: RE: BS: Is My Obsolesence Obsolete? From: gnu Date: 02 Aug 10 - 02:04 PM I got kicked outta cub scouts. In groups, we had to go into the woods and find as many animals as possible and make a list of our finds. We had one hour (while the adults BBQd and drank... from coffee cups). We had the longest list and won whatever prize it was. Then, Thommy, a much larger lad and a bully, told his Dad that I cheated because I just started writing stuff down that we hadn't found. No, I didn't get kicked out for cheating. I got kicked out because I had already earned a badge from my old man in boxing and I kicked Thommy's ass. |

Subject: RE: BS: Is My Obsolesence Obsolete? From: Rapparee Date: 02 Aug 10 - 02:28 PM Once at Summer Camp we had to form up into "Patrols" of scouts from various troops. At the Campfire that night we had to name our Patrols: Eagle, Bear, and such. We, being somewhat irreverent, named ourselves the "Wood Tick Patrol." We had won several prizes, and it was VERY difficult for scoutmasters calling the names of the winning patrols to keep ours straight (which we had figured would happen). |

Subject: RE: BS: Is My Obsolesence Obsolete? From: mousethief Date: 02 Aug 10 - 05:44 PM Alex, If you didn't get enough merit badges to make Eagle Scout, merit badges don't mean much. And mine are all mildewed now. There's more to being in Boy Scouts than becoming Eagle. There's more to earning a merit badge than getting the little cloth circle (or should be). What I got out of my merit badges was what I learned while earning them. If learning while pursuing a goal is obsolete, this whole planet is fucked. |
