I mean, I don't know squat about Windows 7 and don't want to. I can do a chmod 700 in Unix. I know how to drop to the C drive and enter "format". I can load and fire muzzleloading weapons. I can use a sword to good effect or start fire without matches or lighters and things.

Are these still obsolete skills or what?

Well I guess I am right there with ya cause I do the same and practice it .. so we must both be obsolete ... but heck if the big one drops we will probably be around a little bit longer for knowing how to do such.

I can do basic blacksmithing, metal & wood work, basic electrics (& electronics) & plumbing, (computing - programming, design, repair - many different OSes) as well as cooking and preserving, and a whole lots other obsolete skills, save a place for me on 'the Ark', will you please?

Not quite 'everything'... VCRs, prune Danish, brandy kegs on St. Bernards and Boy Scout merit badges have not been covered. I'm sure there must be 2-3 others.

Alex, If you didn't get enough merit badges to make Eagle Scout, merit badges don't mean much. And mine are all mildewed now.

When I was a Boy Scout (Star...I took one step on the "Eagle Trail" and said, "The hell with this!") I was a den leader for some Cub Scouts. As such I got to wear a green rope on my shoulder. My friends told everyone that it meant I had an awful case of VD.

Home distilling of medicines has also not been discussed.

I was in scouts for about 2 years after Cub Scouts. Turned out I got into what what was humorously called "Coulsen's Eagle Mill" in Wichita.

He was famous for turning 'em out, and had little use for boys who didn't go for the big prize. I was an...ummmm.. 'underachiever' who just wanted some fun and experience, and the pressure to "set goals" was too much. Then I got a paper route, and it ate up most of my spare time.

I got kicked outta cub scouts. In groups, we had to go into the woods and find as many animals as possible and make a list of our finds. We had one hour (while the adults BBQd and drank... from coffee cups). We had the longest list and won whatever prize it was. Then, Thommy, a much larger lad and a bully, told his Dad that I cheated because I just started writing stuff down that we hadn't found.

No, I didn't get kicked out for cheating. I got kicked out because I had already earned a badge from my old man in boxing and I kicked Thommy's ass.

Once at Summer Camp we had to form up into "Patrols" of scouts from various troops. At the Campfire that night we had to name our Patrols: Eagle, Bear, and such.

We, being somewhat irreverent, named ourselves the "Wood Tick Patrol." We had won several prizes, and it was VERY difficult for scoutmasters calling the names of the winning patrols to keep ours straight (which we had figured would happen).

There's more to being in Boy Scouts than becoming Eagle. There's more to earning a merit badge than getting the little cloth circle (or should be). What I got out of my merit badges was what I learned while earning them. If learning while pursuing a goal is obsolete, this whole planet is fucked.
