With all the election hash and rehash here is some positively good news. After losing our 19 year old kitty this past May, the Mrs. Freightdawg and I decided it was finally time to go save (or doom, depending on your point of view) a couple of more kitties. We adopted a couple of litter mates from an animal rescue group here in Abq. They are about 4 mos. old, the male is solid black (named, after strenuous objections from Mrs. Freightdawg, "Raven" for the Edgar Allen Poe poem) and the female is black and white (named "Duchess" for her regal deportment and coat markings). Little Raven is extremely precocious (I've already fished him out of the dishwasher TWICE) and a budding typist (one trip across the keyboard and I had web pages show up that I didn't even know existed!) Our other two chillun', the stately Munchkin and Callie the psycho kitty, are coping the best they know how, but there is still a considerable amount of hissin' and spittin' goin on.

Hopefully in about a month or so we should be able to load some pictures of the whole family. Stay tuned.

(Duchess just took a header into her water bowl. Low degree of difficulty, but spectacular execution)

Oh what fun! We haven't had a kitten-kitten in the house in years. Rue's "Emily" is a couple of years, so she's lots of fun, as they all are, but oh those little ones, esp. black ones! (We lost two in August and for the first time that I can remember I am without a black cat!)

Funny, I am reading,and typing, with our Morgana,(7 months) sitting on my left arm, purring lke a badly maintained outboard motor and uttering the odd "meep" of satisfaction as is her wont!!!

Life has just been turned upside down by Pete (The Cat that looks like Hitler), who walked into the house three weeks ago and has made himself very much at home. He's as ugly as sin and has breath that could blister paint (teething, I gather), but is as cute as they come. His sister 'adopted' a farm just down the road on the same night, so the litter must have been dumped locally to fend for themselves.
He eats for England, and can't understand why the two other cats here don't want to play with him all the time. When he's bored he goes exploring under the floorboards and up into the attic, where he's mesmerised by the crows tap-dancing on the slates. Most of the time, though, he follows me around like a waif, hopping up onto my lap whenever he can and yawning in a most nauseating fashion.
Trouble is, I haven't worked out how to raise the bollock question. He's got a magnificent pair of black nadgers that he spends hours washing, but sometime soon he's going to have to wake up without 'em. Which will give Julian and Sandy, the camp rescue cats, something to crow about, no doubt!

I have two black and white rescued cats, plus two more at the school where I work. My home cats are an 8 year old long haired called Bathsheba Everdeen (from Far from the Madding Crowd)and a two year old short haired called Isolde of the White Paws ( read the story of Trystan and Isolde and find the 3 Isolde's!). As we have just moved house we have kept them in for 3 weeks and this weekend they went out on their own. They used the cat flap and came home no problem. Last nigh Isolde, whose white bits are so white they are almost blue, came home after dark, leaped up on the table, which she shouldn't have done but was so proud of finding her way home in the dark, and rolled over. There was the evidence to show she had found the calf shed in the farm next door - well not the shed itself but... the cow s***!! I really think I might have to buy cat shampoo in bulk or dye her underside a strange shade of   manure!! Even so, I love them unconditionally just as they love us unconditionally.

My two are both "found" cats and selected through a mutual-adoption process. We liked them and they liked us. One is about 10, the other about 4. One of these years I'll add another cat to the house, because I think it's a good idea to have more than one if you're going to have any, and recognizing the inevitability of the older one going and leaving the younger one alone. My method for introduction is to have them spend time in kennels in the same room, to get used to the idea of the other cat, and gradually let them meet face to face. It gets a lot of the "hissing" out of the way without much of it occurring at all. Oops, I'm dressed for work in dark pants and the calico just hopped into my lap. Means there will be a dust-and-cat-hair removal operation before I head out the door. She purrs her approval of this topic.

I sold the apartment where I was living to my friend Animal X's parents. She's delighted since it means they are staying in Pittsburgh. Animal raises orphaned kittens for a shelter, and she gave me a little tabby girl.
If there is a thing you don't need when you're moving it's a kitten. But little Grace O'Malley, is a very bright spot in my life. She is all that a kitten should be. I wish she wouldn't wake me up in the middle of the night to play. I wish she'd quit ambushing my ankles and biting through my knitting yarn. But when she discovered why it's not a good idea to sit on the edge of the bathtub while the human is in the bathtub, it was the best show in town. Ditto when she tries to kill a chair, get to the birds outside. And when she has to snuggle and purr, she must have a resonator inside her somewhere.
Hollowfox and her cubs came to help me pack before the move. Grace was tickled to have friends her own age to play with.

Ah, moggies! (Why don't we Yanks call them that??)
The bane of many a tidy housekeeper! (Fortunately, said category does not include yours truly, but even my own customary domestic chaos is oft rendered still more unkempt by feline antics.)

My dear Grisabella Raggmopp (a k a "Greasy Ragg") is almost canine in her tendency to come when called or whistled for! LOL And part of her technique for adopting me was to raise up on her hind legs and bump her head against my knees, purring all the while.
One thing she does while I'm still trying to sleep many a morning -- to my simultaneous affectionate delight and vexation -- is to reach out a paw, with just a wee teensy tip of one claw extended, and tap me on the cheek, nose, forehead, or whatever other parts are not protected by sheets or blankets. LOL (She's lucky she's got beautiful big eyes and purrs a lot! A lesser creature might not survive such impertinence!) LOL

Ah, Genie, what a wonderful description of our first two kitties, (now, so sadly, both deceased). Our little Mouse (yes, he was a cat. How he got his name is a long story) would come when he was called. He was the most telepathic animal I have ever owned. The day my dad died he crawled up in my lap and meowed as hard as I ever heard him cry. I wiped my own tears on his coat. He shared my sorrow for what must have been 30 minutes or so (an eternity for the fickle minded feline.) Our Half-Pint would greet my wife every morning the moment she opened an eye - he would be right in her face purring and asking for breakfast. If she was a tad late in rising she would get the gentlest little tap on the nose or forehead. Then, almost as if to say, "well, now that you're awake, you might as well feed me" he would purr and "meaapp". He was our vocal kitty. He had more distinct meows, murrs, meaapps, and other sounds that our other cats combined.

So many thanks to all who have posted. I promise to get the pictures up either by Christmas or shortly after the New Year. I am waiting on a guitar to get out of the shop so I can add it to the family portrait.

I have just gone off Pete in a big way. The little bastard stole my lunch. I wouldn't mind if it was tuna or chicken or something meaty, but it was bloody beans on toast! Popped the plate on the caravan table, popped back over to the house to check I'd turned the tap off, and when I come back both slices are on the floor (butter side down, of course) and the beans are inside this small cat who - I swear - is grinning.
The sooner his bollocks are removed the better! (Not that it'll stop him thieving, but it makes for a modicum of revenge).

Waylon disappeared last Sunday afternoon and was missing until Thursday night. We had just about reconciled ourselves to the realization that a fox had probably got him, because he wouldn't stay away that long on his own when it was this cold, when he showed up, perfectly all right except a little thinner and very anxious to sleep in front of the wood stove. They just do it to torture us...

My two are complaining because it's Friday night and that means the kids spend the night with their dad. The cats like me okay, and know they're my cats, but they really miss the kids.

One of my cats was "our" cat when I was still married. The other wandered in at the apartment where the kids and I lived for a couple of years after the divorce. I'm always glad that the new cat gets the same thoughtful attention from the ex that the old cat gets when he comes over to visit. Like the kids, they want equal attention.
