The old urban myth of the nurse in an old peoples home who cleaned false dentures.
So the story goes - the nurse decided to improve her efficiency by cleaning more than one pair at a time, and by the time she came to hand them back she realised the puzzle was just about to begin.
Trying them individually until they fitted.

Well today on radio a lady who was a trainee nurse in 1960 at the Hospital (note) St Thomases in London by the name of Stella Marsh came on to a phone-in to verify that she was there when it happened. The poor hassled nurse with not enough time (a strict regime & Sister) was identified as Margaret.

They asked if Margaret would care to phone in and confirm, with a surname. Would you?

A typo maybe but if they put the wrong teeth in the patient they must, by definition, be the false dentures. ANnd statistically they are more likely to have to try more false than true - isn't it true?

You never know! While in hospital a few years ago, I watched the old boy in the bed opposite get his pre-op check from the anaesthetist. "Are they your own teeth?" he was asked.

Looking highly indignant, he answered: "Why, aye, of course they're my own."

Turned out, of course, they were dentures. But they weren't anybody else's dentures.

Luckily, the misunderstanding was discovered before he went for his op.

This guy was supposed to make a speech at a convention, but when he went to the men's room, he turned around to flush and at the same time he sneezed. Down went his dentures into the sewer. He went and sat down next to his host and told him what happened. he said "I can't speak in public without my teeth"! The man next to him pulled out a set of dentures amd said "Try these." he did, but they were too big, so the other guy says, ok try these". They were too small. But the third set fit well so he made his speech, and afterwards thanked his mentor saying, "I was so lucky to sit next to a dentist"! the mentor said, "I'm not a dentist, I'm a mortician."

I remember it happening when I was a student nurse (in the late 80's)... I hasten to add it wasn't me... but the nurse who did it wasn't the brightest at the best of times

At a concert in Halifax, Yorks, many years ago, a well-known singer (Owen Brannigan?) was in full flow when his dentures shot out of his mouth. Unabashed, he caught them deftly and in the course of his next few bars' rest, turned away from the audience, re-inserted them and carried on as if nothing had happened.

Can't remember what he was singing, but it may have been "Messiah" - anyway he Handeled it well!!!
