Subject: RE: BS: Happy Spring! From: Bobert Date: 20 Mar 03 - 09:49 PM Thankee, Peter, and a happy spring back to you. Yeah, though these are sad times in terms of our little planet here, the birds don't semm to know of the mankind's folly. And the wildflowers are oblivious and after the 4th snowiest winter in history here on the Blue Ridge Mountain, inspite of all that seems so out of control, our bird and plant friends remind us of God's beauty and blessings. Yes, this spring is like running into an old, old friend. Bobert |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy Spring! From: Pushkin Date: 21 Mar 03 - 03:36 AM Happy Ostara everybody. Although to be honest looking out of my office window at the moment it's extremely grey at the moment. With everything else that is going on at the moment it's definitely good to think about everything Spring brings. Pushkin |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy Spring! From: greg stephens Date: 21 Mar 03 - 04:00 AM Saw my first butterfly this year in Stoke yesterday. A Comma: they sem to be getting more common these days, I used to consider them a bit of a prize when I was kiad. For the last two years, the first ones up were the Brimstones, but I havent seen one yet this year. But I have brewed my coffee, and am now going to walk to the primrose bank and see what's doing. |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy Spring! From: greg stephens Date: 21 Mar 03 - 05:08 AM Back from the sunshine. Had a wonderfully leisurely cop of coffee in warm sun, watching a celandine open. A surprisingly quick process. Funny that some flowers(primroses) basically stay open, where celandines actually only open when direct sun hits them: on a cloudy days the ones in our garden dont open at all. You'ld think they'd be missing out on insect visits by not bothering to open up, I thinks it's pretty idle. Some evil creature bites of the buds of celandines, particularly those on the most exposed sunny bank. Dont know if its birds, squirrels, or insects, I haven't caught a culprit in the act. |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy Spring! From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 21 Mar 03 - 05:54 AM It even feels like spring here in the frozen north. It smells like spring, even with several inches of snow still on the ground! The lower elevations are showing large patches of bare ground, and here in the rural higher elevations it is Mud Season in earnest! Gloop! |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy Spring! From: gnu Date: 22 Mar 03 - 10:21 AM I was just out for a spin and saw flocks of a particular kind of bird which is a sure sign of spring here in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada... the Out-of-Town Shopper. License plates of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island abound on the streets of Moncton. |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy Spring! From: Peg Date: 22 Mar 03 - 10:52 AM Looking forward to getting over to my garden plot in the Fenway; this will have been my first winter with it. I hope my Weber grill is still there! (Stuff gets stolen and my birdfeeders disappeared after two weeks). The snow is nealry melted in Boston and the daffodils are coming up...yay! Off to celebrate Ostara tonight with my coven, and we had a potent equinox ritual on Thursday; the tides have broken and reformed and maybe things will smooth out a bit. I do wonder if the powers that be chose this week of equinox and full moon to start the war specifically knowing it is a turbulent time... |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy Spring! From: Joe_F Date: 22 Mar 03 - 07:23 PM In Boston, MA, USA, where the astronomical beginning of spring is an annual joke, this year it was for real. The instant the sun crossed the Equator, it started warming up. Next day, high in the 60s (F), fluffy clouds, birds singing, geese feeding around the edges of the ice on Fellsmere Pond. On the other hand, one recalls the April Fool blizzard of 1997. |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy Spring! From: Liz the Squeak Date: 22 Mar 03 - 07:30 PM Greg - it's slugs. Got blue tits in the garden this morning. Saw my first daisies too. I love Spring, but I hate this time of year.... it's that dreadful song that does it for me..... 'Seasons in the sun'.... I know, I'm daft. LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy Spring! From: Ebbie Date: 23 Mar 03 - 12:41 AM Greg, in damp southeast Alaska, slugs are an ever-present garden pest. When my rhubarb was almost mowed to the ground, I finally bought a liter of the cheapest beer I could find (I had the man put it in a brown bag so people wouldn't think that's what I was drinking!) then hollowed a spot in the bed of rhubarb and buried a large plastic mug to its rim. Filled it with beer. Pretty amazing. I had to empty the cup every other day- it absolutely filled with the slimers. One liter of beer lasted most of the growing season. And the rhubarb bounced back. |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy Spring! From: Troll Date: 23 Mar 03 - 03:27 AM Damn POLLEN!!!(snif) But I've got three mating pairs of cardinals coming to my bird feeder and the lemon tree is absolutely full of blossoms. If they all set, I'll have to prop the limbs up to keep them from breaking. We got nearly two bushels off that tree last season and it's only a little over 6 ft. tall. And our Florida State bird is back in large numbers. The Florida State bird? The mosquito. troll |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy Spring! From: reggie miles Date: 23 Mar 03 - 06:38 PM Sawry all but my mind works in mysterious ways and when I read this thread title I couldn't help but imagine the song Springtime from the movie The Producers by Mel Brooks, with a few easy new twists to the wording. So what do ya think here we go, another hit for the same ol' brand new show. Springtime For Geedubya And USA USA was having trouble, what a sad, sad story Needed a new leader to restore its former glory Where, Oh where was he? Where could that man be? We looked around and then we found The man for you and me. And now it's.. Springtime for Geedubya and USA Our homeland is happy and gay We're marching to a faster pace Look out, here comes the master race Springtime for Geedubya and USA Winter for Iraq and France Springtime for Geedubya and USA Come on, Americans, go into your dance I was born in a Texas gorge, and that is why they call me George Don't be stupid, be a smarty, come and join the Republican party Springtime for Geedubya and USA Goosestep's the new step today Bombs falling from the skies again Dow Jones is on the rise again Springtime for Geedubya and USA Patriots are sailing once more Springtime for Geedubya and USA Means that soon we'll be going We've got to be going You know we'll be going to WAR! |
