Subject: BS: Why do we get thirsty and is there anyth From: Little Hawk Date: 02 May 08 - 09:52 PM ...anything we can do about it? ;-) I mean, hey, I've been told by all kinds of health counseling stuff that I should be drinking 6 to 8 large glasses of fresh water every day...but it's hard to keep track of that. And when I do try to do my duty and drink all that water I feel like I'm about to become waterlogged and founder. Furthermore, I have to go and pee so frequently that it becomes a real bother. So...what if we never got thirsty? Could there be a way of arranging that? It would save a lot of water, and I hear that the world is getting short of fresh water. It would also reduce trips to the washroom, and that could be a good thing, because every time you flush the toilet a whole bunch more water gets used up. Anybody got a solution to this conundrum? I expect some brilliant answers. Amos? BillD? Spaw? I know you guys can do it. I have faith in you. Solve this one for me. |

Subject: RE: BS: Why do we get thirsty and is there anyth From: Rapparee Date: 02 May 08 - 09:56 PM First of all, doctors are now saying you don't need 8 big glasses of water every day. 'Most any liquid will do, and drink it when you're thirsty (but watch your hydration!). Therefore you won't have to pee as often or as much. This will bring on infections of the prostate and bladder and cause your kidneys to petrify. You will then need expensive surgery or expensive care or an expensive funeral. You see, the doctors are in league with the morticians. Does this answer any of your question? |

Subject: RE: BS: Why do we get thirsty and is there anyth From: bobad Date: 02 May 08 - 10:01 PM FYI Five Myths About Drinking Water by Allison Aubrey Morning Edition, April 3, 2008 · Is bottled water better for you than tap? Or should you choose vitamin-enriched water over sparkling? Experts say, skip it all. None of these products are likely to make you any healthier. Below, we look at five major myths about the benefits of drinking water. But first, how do you know if you're drinking enough water? Experts say there's an easy way to judge. If you're not thirsty, you're fluid intake is likely "just right." Myth No. 1: Drink Eight Glasses Each Day Scientists say there's no clear health benefit to chugging or even sipping water all day. So where does the standard advice of drinking eight glasses each day come from? "Nobody really knows," says Dr. Stanley Goldfarb, a kidney expert at the University of Pennsylvania. Myth No. 2: Drinking Lots of Water Helps Clear Out Toxins The kidneys filter toxins from our bloodstreams. Then the toxins clear through the urine. The question is, does drinking extra water each day improve the function of the kidneys? "No," says Goldfarb. "In fact, drinking large amounts of water surprisingly tends to reduce the kidney's ability to function as a filter. It's a subtle decline, but definite." Myth No. 3: Lots of Water Equals Healthier Skin The body is already 60 percent water. So, if you take a 200-pound man, he's 120 pounds of water. Adding a few extra glasses of water each day has limited effect. "It's such a tiny part of what's in the body," says Goldfarb. "It's very unlikely that one's getting any benefit." His full editorial is published in the current issue of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. One study published in 2007 on the cosmetic benefit of drinking water suggests that 500 ml of water increases capillary blood flow in the skin. "But it's unclear whether these changes are clinically significant," says Goldfarb. Myth No. 4: Drinking Extra Water Leads to Weight Loss A more accurate statement may be: Drinking water is a helpful tool for dieters. "Water is a great strategy for dieters because it has no calories," says Madeline Fernstrom of the University of Pittsburgh. "So you can keep your mouth busy without food and get the sense of satisfaction." But water is not magical, she adds. Other zero-calorie options such as diet sodas are fine, too. Myth No. 5: It's Easy to Get Dehydrated During a Workout Dehydration sets in when a person has lost 2 percent of his or her body weight. So for a 200-pound man, this means losing 4 pounds of water. Marathon runners, bikers and hikers all need to recognize the signs of dehydration. "It is also obvious that individuals in hot, dry climates have increased need for water," says Goldfarb. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends that athletes drink 16 ounces of fluids a couple of hours before starting sports practice. But for a stroll in the park, no water bottle is necessary. Goldfarb's advice: Just drink when you're thirsty. |

Subject: RE: BS: Why do we get thirsty and is there anyth From: Little Hawk Date: 02 May 08 - 10:02 PM Ha! I've suspected for a long time that doctors were in league with someone, but I thought it was the drug companies, not the morticians. You see, a mortician wants you dead, but a drug company doesn't want you dead...it just wants you to be chronically sick and physically or emotionally addicted to a whole bunch of expensive legal drugs. Nice try, though, Rapaire. ;-) |

Subject: RE: BS: Why do we get thirsty and is there anyth From: Little Hawk Date: 02 May 08 - 10:10 PM "diet sodas are fine, too" Wha?????????????????????? You gotta be joking! Diet sodas are absolute crap. The carbonation in those drinks is no good for you and the artificial sweeteners and other garbage they put in are way worse for you than even the sugar in the non-diet drinks, which is bad enough in itself. All soda type drinks are bad for you. This thread was intended as a joke, but I am not joking in my comments about diet sodas. NO siree. You want to be healthier? Don't drink ANY soft drinks or carbonated beverages whatsoever. Drink water, natural fruit juices, and natural vegetable juices. Also, a mild daily intake of some alcholic beverages...wine, for example...can be beneficial...as long as you don't have too much of it. |

Subject: RE: Why do we get thirsty-is there anything we can do? From: Joe Offer Date: 02 May 08 - 10:16 PM I've heard that beer hydrates a person just as well as water does. I found this to be very encouraging news... -Joe, from Milwaukee- But Little Hawk, didn't you already start your one thread for today? |

Subject: RE: BS: Why do we get thirsty and is there anyth From: Rapparee Date: 02 May 08 - 10:17 PM I wasn't finished. The morticians are also in league with the drug companies. You take enough pills before you kick off less embalming fluid has to be used. Embalming fluid (arterial fluid) runs about USD 67.00 per case of 16 oz. bottles. You can see how the morticians save money if you've killed off all of your intestinal flora by the antemortem use of antibiotics -- that YOU paid for! -- by using less fluid but still charging for a full job. Man, they're all in it together. I would have thought you knew that! (And don't get me started on cremations!) |

Subject: RE: Why do we get thirsty-is there anything we can do? From: Little Hawk Date: 02 May 08 - 10:26 PM Heh! Heh! Yes, I see what you mean... Joe, I think beer may work well for some people, but not for me. Since I was about 40 it makes me feel ill. Even a single glass of beer leaves me feeling considerably worse than if I had drunk none at all. I feel dull, cruddy, and definitely not so good, like I had just put a junkyard in my gut. If I am foolish enough to drink 2 or 3 glasses of beer, then I start feeling REALLY bad! (I only had to have this happen about twice, and I gave up beer entirely...I had never liked it much anyway, even when I was younger I drank it only because others around me were doing so.) No, what I like is water, fruit juices, green tea, carrot juice, coconut juice... Ever had the real juice from a real fresh coconut just off the tree? Absolutely WONDERFUL stuff! |

Subject: RE: Why do we get thirsty-is there anything we can do? From: JohnInKansas Date: 03 May 08 - 11:55 AM If you can get 90 percent of your caloric requirements from nice fresh celery you likely will never need to drink anything ... . Of course a 3000 calorie per day diet would require you to eat about 200(?) pounds of celery per day. You might not have to piss too often, but there's still sort of an "elimination" problem. And celery doesn't grow on trees, so you might have to go into the shipping busines to import enough. John |

Subject: RE: Why do we get thirsty-is there anything we can do? From: Ebbie Date: 03 May 08 - 01:02 PM I have an elderly cat that sometimes needs to be hydrated by 'pumping' liquid under the skin which his b9dy absorbs. So I think that Little Hawk's question has merit. Find a spot on your body, LH, that has loose skin suitable for the needle. Never drink again. |

Subject: RE: Why do we get thirsty-is there anything we can From: GUEST,Jack the Sailor Date: 03 May 08 - 01:46 PM I don't think that the use of water for drinking is a major problem in land use. If you want to save the planet, don't wear cotton. Hemp is much more environmentally friendly. I wonder about synthetic fibres, are they byproducts or do they divert petroleum from use as fuel? I guess if you really wanted to minimize your own use of water, you could wear a special suit that recycles your sweat and other waste water, I think you could make a crude one with some hefty bags, some duct tape and the filter from a Brita jug. |

Subject: RE: Why do we get thirsty-is there anything we can do? From: Peace Date: 03 May 08 - 02:01 PM "Why do we get thirsty-is there anything we can do?" We get thirsty because our cells cry out for H2O. You could tie your pecker in a knot, plug up yer arse with a cork and THEN drink sufficient (but only sufficient) water to assuage that thirst. You will then become a self-contained eco system for a short time before you turn into a toxic waste site. It's not the same answer you'da got from Ann Landers, but then I ain't Ann Landers. |
|
Subject: RE: Why do we get thirsty-is there anything we can From: Jeri Date: 03 May 08 - 02:11 PM I don't have anything to tie in a knot, thankyouverymuch. Even with the knots and plugs, you sweat. You go somewhere like Kuwait in June, when it's 130+°F in the shade during the day, and you'd dehydrate in short time. Gotta coat yourself with latex or something. |
