Can you suggest any songs associated with the month of September ie: (A) Any songs with September in the title (B) Any songs with a September date given in the lyrics (C) Any songs referencing an event that is known to have occurred in September even if the lyrics do not actually say so.
It would be very helpful to have links to performances of the songs and also more sources of information about them.

Below is an alphabetical index of the titles collected in this thread so far. If a title in this index is clicked then you should be jumped to the section of the thread in which most of the discussion and links for that title occurs. If you just want to add a new post to this thread use the “Post to this thread” or POST buttons to jump to the end of the thread. I shall sometimes rearrange “ late” posts to group them with the appropriate main area of discussion so that they are not overlooked. When I add to someone’s post I make this clear by doing so beneath an orange line like the one below.- Regards, GeoffLawes

Subject: Any September Songs?
From: GUEST,Lin
Date: 02 Aug 21 - 09:12 PM

I'm looking for September songs a little early I know.
I'm trying to get the list together for my birthday month ahead of time. Here are two of my favourites to start the list.

WASN'T THAT A MIGHTY STORM

cho: Wasn't that a mighty storm
Wasn't that a mighty storm in the morning, well
Wasn't that a mighty storm
That blew all the people all away.

The song commemorates the Galveston flood of September 1900, the greatest natural loss of life in the US at the time.

The DT has another version of the song:

GALVESTON FLOOD

It was a September evening when the sky was dark and grey
Raging wind and water battled Hell in its sway
The rich folk in the mansions and the poor ones in the dell
Were swept into eternity the story left to tell

THE HEIGHTS OF ALMA

Ye loyal Britons, pray give ear
Unto the news I bring you here
While joy each Briton's heart doth cheer
For the vict'ry gained at Alma
'Twas on September the eighteenth day
In spite of dashing salt sea spray,
We landed safe in the Crimea
Upon our route for Alma.

Chorus] Sing back September Sky
There's only You and I
Yesterday she called to say she's free
Tired of being alone
She's on the road back home
And Lord it's time you had a song for me

[Bridge]
Once I had her heart and let it go
Now she's coming back and now I know

[Verse 1]
Stay up September snow
Soon I will let you go
Morning she'll be almost home again I asked her over today
Soon I will ask her to stay
And nothing we could do could hurt us then
Crying she had once walked out the door
Now she's coming back to try once more

[Verse 2]
Throw back September's time
Give me the only kind
Seems to know the troubles I've been through
I've been along before
Don't want it anymore
By morning time, I'll have a song for you
Yes I'm going to have a song for you
Singing is the only thing to do

16th September, 2003 Death of Baha Mousa in Basra

ORDINARY ENGLISH LADS
1.When Baha Mousa was twenty six,
The life from him was torn,
He was beaten and kicked in a Basra jail,
By young men in uniform.

ChorusAnd those who’ve known the soldiers well,
Such as neighbours, mums and dads,
Would say that at home in England,
They were ordinary English lads.

2.As the sun rose over the small hotel,
Where Baha’s living was made,
A squad of a Lancashire Regiment came,
On an early morning raid.
Chorus
3.The place was searched, some guns were found,
And the staff was all detained,
To be taken away, in handcuffs,
For the guns to be explained.
Chorus
4.So Baha came to an army post,
And was placed in a holding cell,
He was hooded and stressed, and deprived of sleep,
He was beaten and kicked as well.
Chorus
5.His food and water, sleep and rest,
Were all kept in short supply,
While screams of abuse and death threats,
Were used freely to terrify.
Chorus
6.They broke his nose and they cracked his ribs,
They smashed him against the wall,
When his heart gave out, Baha’s injuries,
Numbered ninety three in all.
Chorus
7.A corporal got one year in jail,
But true justice was denied,
For ranks closed around the guilty,
And most witnesses simply lied.
Chorus

Hi Geoff,
I've always been drawn to the sombre songs or songs with primarily minor chords. I know that is strange perhaps.
I remember when I was a little kid really liking the song "Patches" which was a very sombre song. Then really loving the song, "Catch the Wind" by Donovan when I was about 12 or so. Of course there are plenty of songs I like that are not sombre at all and have major chords but there is just something about those minor chords in songs that I like the most.

Anyone remember that dark lyric song, "Patches?"
From the early 1960's I believe?
Oh yeah, "Puff the Magic Dragon";used to make me cry too when I was a kid - but still loved the song. I wanted to find that cove and be the dragon's friend when Jackie Paper came no more. Well...I was just a little kid and felt so sad for the dragon.

Stephen Biko, South African activist, died 12 Sept. 1977
I just heard Bill Rolston sing "Biko" at the Sept. meeting of the Sunflower folk club (Belfast, Northern Ireland via Zoom)

BIKO by Peter Gabriel

September '77
Port Elizabeth weather fine
It was business as usual
In police room 619
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Yihla Moja, Yihla Moja
-The man is dead

When I try to sleep at night
I can only dream in red
The outside world is black and white
With only one colour dead
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Yihla Moja, Yihla Moja
-The man is dead

You can blow out a candle
But you can't blow out a fire
Once the flames begin to catch
The wind will blow it higher
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Yihla Moja, Yihla Moja
-The man is dead

And the eyes of the world are
Watching now
Watching now

BIKO     (Holly Near & Ronnie Gilbert )
Biko!Biko!Biko!
Here comes Stephen Biko
Walking down the road
Hey, Hey, whatcha gonna do with Biko, Biko, Biko

Waters of fear and hatred
Waters of starving babies
Hey, Hey, whatcha gonna do with Biko, Biko, Biko

Come all the way from Capetown
To Wilmington North Carolina
Hey, Hey, whatcha gonna do with Biko, Biko, Biko

You can break one human body
See ten thousand Bikos
Hey, Hey, whatcha gonna do with Biko, Biko, Biko

Here comes Stephen Biko
Walking down the road
Hey, Hey, whatcha gonna do with Biko, Biko, Biko

Oliver Cromwell died 3 Sept 1658

There's a song on Mudcat
https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=95986#3840319

OLIVER CROMWELL LAY BURIED AND DEAD
(Trad)

Oliver Cromwell lay buried and dead,
Hee-haw, buried and dead,
There grew an old apple-tree over his head,
Hee-haw, over his head.

The apples were ripe and ready to fall,
Hee-haw, ready to fall,
There came an old woman to gather them all,
Hee-haw, gather them all.

Oliver rose and he gave her a drop,
Hee-haw, gave her a drop,
Which made the old woman go hippety hop,
Hee-haw, hippety hop.

The saddle and bridle, they lie on the shelf,
Hee-haw, lie on the shelf,
If you want any more your can sing it yourself,
Hee-haw, sing it yourself.

Can you suggest a better song or two for the occasion?

September Song (linked here to the Brothers Four) is also TRY TO REMEMBER
. There's a brief note in the list, but in fact it is a major song in The Fantasticks, which ran off-Broadway forever but was probably finally killed off by COVID-19.

Jerry Orbach sings "Try to Remember" in the off-Broadway version. From Wikipedia:

Try to Remember is a song from the musical comedy The Fantasticks. It is the first song sung in the show, to get the audience to imagine what the sparse set suggests. Its lyrics, written by Tom Jones, famously rhyme "remember" with "September", "so tender", and "December." Harvey Schmidt composed the music.

Try to Remember was originally sung by Jerry Orbach in the Original Off Broadway production of The Fantasticks. "Try To Remember" made the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart three times in 1965 in versions by Ed Ames, Roger Williams and the The Brothers Four. However, in 1975, Gladys Knight & The Pips had a huge international hit with their version of "Try to Remember," combining it into a medley with a cover of Barbra Streisand's The Way We Were. It reached #11 on the Hot 100 chart. In Knight's version, she recited some of the lyrics from "Try To Remember" in spoken-word fashion before beginning to sing "The Way We Were." The Greek singer Nana Mouskouri also recorded it in three languages: German, French, and Italian.

Try to Remember was also used in the soundtrack of the film The Man Who Fell to Earth, the video game Chrono Trigger, and the Hong Kong film City of Glass (Boli zhi cheng).

I remember the Man Who Fell To Earth use, though I only saw that movie once about 40 years ago. Something to look up for this list.

Mysha, thanks for suggesting    RUN, COME SEE JERUSALEM

In the Mudcat thread to which you gave a link ‘Origins: History of 'Run, Come See Jerusalem' Azizi told us,
"Written by Blake Higgs (he recorded it in 1951), a Bahamian calypso singer who was well known for entertaining tourists in Nassau, this song has been covered by many American folk singers including The Weavers. It's about a devastating hurricane in the Bahamas in 1929 that caught people unaware and destroyed many ships. Alan Lomax documented another song also about the same store, called A Great Storm Pass Over, written by a Bahamian sponge fisherman called Tappy Joe; it was recorded in 1935."
And Charlie Baum told us that it was
“the 1929 Category 3 to 4 hurricane that swept over the Bahamas in late September.”

Well, we are getting towards the end of the month, so, if I may, I'll give you one that I co-wrote with friend April Caesar in a song-writing group a few years back, Misty September: it was inspired for me by driving down to our usual meeting place on a morning when it was very misty: we are quite high up in this part of Edinburgh, and often look down on a blanket of "haar" over the Firth of Forth, but on this occasions it was misty even at our level. April had a friend who emigrated to Australia, so there is reference to the longing to be back in Scotland in the lyrics. And, no, it doesn't all rhyme, and where it does, it follows different patterns, but that's just how it evolved! I also describe it as being a love song for Scotland.
If anyone wants the tune, I can send it as a pdf, or there is rather over-spotlighted YouTube of us singing it at Edinburgh Folk Club's annual song-writing competition: we didn't win anything!
April is not seen in the video as she was not able to get down on stage, but she was singing from the gallery!
Misty September

MISTY SEPTEMBER                 Trish Santer/April Caesar 14/11/14

Verse 1:
One day as I went walking, down the mountainside,
When I saw my sweetheart, coming o’er the brae,
I asked “Where are you going?”, and then he said to me,
“Let’s see where this road takes us, this September day”.

Chorus 1:
Sunrise o’er the mountains, swiftly coursing streams,
Shifting light on vibrant colours ever change the scene,
Can’t bear to leave my homeland, where my heart has always been,
Scotland, I’ll be true to you, Scotland, in my dreams.

Verse 2 :
Soon the mist came rolling, down that mountainside,
Bubbled like a cauldron, chilled us to the bone,
But we climbed up higher, till we saw clear skies,
Marvelled at the splendour of the land that is our home.

Chorus 2:
Sunset o’er the mountains, swiftly coursing streams,
Shifting light on vibrant colours ever change the scene,
Can’t bear to leave my homeland, where my heart has always been,
Scotland, I’ll be true to you, Scotland, in my dreams.

Instrumental:

Chorus 3:
Dusk falls o’er the mountains, sparkling Milky Way,
Landscape silhouetted gauntly, since the close of day,
Stillness now surrounds me, more than I can say,
Scotland, I’m at home with you, Scotland, here I’ll stay,

Scotland, I’m at peace with you, Scotland, here I’ll stay.

I note that Johnnie Cope was mentioned higher up the thread, and this week was the 276th anniversary of the Battle of Prestonpans. The late Davy Steele, who came from Prestonpans, sang it to a different tune from the well-known one.
And the Corries had a different song entirely, called “The Battle of Prestonpans”: ‘ll see if I can find it!

Here it is: written by Roy Williamson of The Corries: it doesn’t mention the date, but the history books will tell you that the battle was in September!

THE BATTLE OF PRESTONPANS                         Roy Williamson

The chevalier, being void of fear,
Did march up Birsley Brae, man,
Through Tranent, ere he did stint
As fast as he could gae, man.
General Cope did taunt and mock
Wi’ many a loud hussa, man,
But ere next morn proclaimed the dawn
We heard anither craw, man.

Chorus
General Cope led frae behind
Tae keep his men in order,
When the English ran, he was in the van
And first across the Border.

The brave Lochiel, as I heard tell
Led Camerons on in clouds man,
The morning fair, and clear the air
They loosed with devilish thuds man.
Down guns they threw, and swords they drew
And soon did chase them off, man,
On Seaton Crafts, they buffed their chafts
And gart them run like daft, man.                Chorus

Now Caddell dressed among the rest
Wi’ gun and guid claymore, man,
On gelding gray, he rade the day
Wi’ pistols set before, man.
The cause was good, he’d spend his blood
Before that he would yield, man,
But the night before, he left the corps,
And never faced the field, man.                Chorus

Now Simpson keen tae clear his een
O’ rebels far in wrong, man
Did never strive wi’ pistols five
But he galloped wi’ the throng, man,
Ower Sutra Hill, e’er he stood still
Before he tasted meat, man,
Monteith may brag, o’ his swift nag
That bore him aff sae fleet, man.                Chorus

The bluff dragoons swore blood and oons
They’d mak the rebels run, man,
Yet they flee, when them they see
And they winnae fire a gun, man,
They turned their back, their foot they brak,
Terror seized them a’, man,
Some wet their cheeks, some filled their breeks
And some for fear did fa’, man.                 Chorus

AN CHÉAD MHÁIRT DEN FHÓMHAR is an Irish lament about Páidí Ó Dónaill, who was drowned on the "First Tuesday of the Autumn"/the Harvest

as sung by Jerry Hicks (youtube)

http://seannos.tg4.ie/baile/amhranaithe/diane-ni-chanainn/an-chead-mhairt-de-fhomhar/ lyrics and singing of Diane Ní
The lyrics aren't on Mudcat yet, but there is a comment by Niall Comer at https://mudcat.org/Detail.CFM?messages__Message_ID=288750
Niall says that as far as he knows, Séamas O Dónaill composed the song in 1811 to lament the loss of his son. The two men were bringing home a bag of corn to make poitín with. The bag was too heavy so the men split it up. The father walked home with his portion, but the son was in a boat and he never reached to shore.Chanáinn

WHAT’S THE LIFE OF A MAN

On 2 September 1904, Vaughan Williams collected this song and two more from J. W. Wright, plus two more from Frank Bailey, quite possibly together in the Fox and Goose in Coombe Bissett, Wiltshire.

A good reason to play
Keith Kendrick with Coope Boyes and Simpson.

J.W. Wright was probably James Wright, aged about 38, an agricultural worker who later became a shepherd. Vaughan Williams wrote of Wright’s song ‘I doubt if it’s a folksong he learnt it 30yrs ago [sic]’, which would have meant Wright was a child at the time. This is not unlikely – in the 1970s Ginette Dunn was told that one well-known singer, Cyril Poacher, started to learn his repertoire sitting on the knee of his grandfather.

We learned about this as the Battle of the Heights of Abraham. It was a decisive defeat of the French under the Marquis de Montcalm by a British force led by Major General James Wolfe. Both commanding officers died from wounds sustained during the battle.

Jim Copper sings BOLD GENERAL WOLFE ;

Bold General Wolfe to his men did say,
“Come lads and follow without delay,
To yonder mountain that is so high,
Don't be down-hearted, don't be down-hearted,
For we'll gain the victory.”

The French and Indian War was the North American phase of the Seven Years’ War (1756–63), which was also fought in Europe and India. On one side was the alliance of France, Austria, Sweden, Saxony, Russia, and Spain; on the other, the alliance of Britain, Prussia, and Hanover.

14 September 1812: Napoleon entered Moscow, which had been abandoned by the Russians using a scorched earth policy. But winter was approaching and Napoleon soon had to retreat.

THE WARLIKE LADS OF RUSSIA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mM6chknRF3Q Nic Jones

Nic Jones recorded both this ballad and The Bonnie Banks o' Fordie in September 1974 for the benefit LP for Fred Woods' magazine Folk Review, The First Folk Review Record. According to the sleeve notes; the words are from a broadside in the Harkness Collection at the Harris Museum and Library in Preston; and the tune is collated from various traditional sources, with contributions from Nic Jones. This recording was later included in the Fellside anthology LP and CD Flash Company and on Nic Jones' 2 CD anthology Unearthed where he noted:

Possibly to the consternation of some, I often deliberately altered or re-wrote words and tunes of traditional songs, although I did try to keep it very much in sympathy with the original. Broadsides, however, offered a good source of ballads without such constraints and gave me the freedom to compose around the text without offence. Described on a broadsheet as A New Song—Bonaparte's Escape from Russia, I added a few extra words, wrote a tune and called it The Warlike Lads of Russia. Mainly Norfolk

THE MAID OF MONTEREY - John Hewitt - 1848

The Maid of Monterey

Tom Roush; This is one of the few songs that was written about the Mexican-American War that was fought between 1846 and 1848. Most Americans know little and choose to ignore this conflict but I assure you that the people of Mexico remember it. The song was composed by John Hewitt who would write many songs of the Confederacy in the American Civil War.

Can you post something which links the song to the month of September, please?

I wonder whether there's some confusion here between Monterey and Monterrey. Both were Mexican, and both were battle sites in 1846 during the war between the United States and Mexico, Monterey on 7 July, Monterrey 21 to 24 September. Monterrey is still Mexican, while Monterey, several hundred miles to the North, is in California, which was ceded to the US by Mexico as a result of the war.

Thanks GerryM you may be right but the song title given is spelled “ Monterey “ so possibly it is with the songwriter that the confusion came in ?

Battle of Monterey; Early on 7 July 1846, the frigate USS Savannah and the two sloops, USS Cyane and USS Levant of the United States Navy, captured Monterey and raised the flag of the United States. The only shots fired were a 21-gun salute to the new U.S. flag fired by each of the U.S. Navy ships in the harbor. Wikipedia

Battle of Monterrey; General Pedro de Ampudia and the Mexican Army of the North was defeated by the Army of Occupation, a force of United States Regulars, Volunteers and Texas Rangers under the command of General Zachary Taylor. The hard-fought urban combat led to heavy casualties on both sides. Wikipedia (General Taylor won the day!)

The Maid of Monterey - Published F. D. Benteen, Baltimore, 1851
She cast a look of anguish, On dying and on dead;
Her lap she made a pillow For those who groan'd and bled.
And when the dying soldier For one bright gleam did pray,
He bless'd the Senoretta, The maid of Monterey.

So, unless the song is completely fictitious, it appears to refer to the Battle of Monterrey.

THE FIELD OF MONTEREY The Field of Monterey

The song was inspired by the Battle of Monterrey in the Mexican American War, which was one of the most significant battles in the war, but also one of the bloodiest. The words to “The Field of Monterey” can be traced back to the authorship of Marion Dix Sullivan (1802-1860), a poet from New Hampshire. “The Field of Montery” (sic) was written in 1846 and subtitled as being “affectionately dedicated to Mrs. Virginia Q.S. of Virginia.” Edna Bradeen’s version here, which she learned from her mother, is slightly different than Sullivan’s original.

Sullivan’s poem was not the only artistic expression to be inspired by the battle. Many poems were written about it. Also written were the songs, “The Storming of Monterey” and “The Maid of Monterey.” The latter seems to have been the most popular of all of the songs to come out of the battle. Most of these songs were written in the same style as the popular sentimental pieces of the day. MAINE SONG AND STORY SAMPLER

September 30, 1938. British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain declared there would be "peace in our time," after returning to England having signed the Munich Pact with Adolf Hitler. THE WRECK OF THE PRINCESS ALICE

3 September 1878 The paddle steamer, The Princess Alice, sank on the RiverThames.

THE WRECK OF THE PRINCESS ALICE

1. If you listen to me, a story I'll relate
Of a ship called the good Princess Alice.
She met with her fate in 1878.
She was known as the "Floating Palace".

CHORUS: When the Princess Alice sank in Barking Reach,
Six hundred and forty died together.
Not all had been drowned as the coroner found,
Some were poisoned by the black stinking river.

2. Eight hundred or more were aboard her for sure,
On a pleasure trip in gay company,
But for hundreds of men, their families and their friends,
Oh the pleasure was surely not to be. CHORUS

3. To Sheerness they went, via Woolwich and Gravesend.
William Rickstead it was the captain's name,
And the helmsman was John Ayers who was new to such affairs,
But the captain must accept the final blame. CHORUS

4. As they rounded Tripcock Point, a collier came in sight,
Bywell Castle, a thousand tons or more,
And the collier's captain thought that ships should pass to port
And maintained his position by the shore. CHORUS

5. Well, the Alice came around from the shelter of the land
And was turned by the ebbing tide,
And by now it was too late to avoid the dreadful fate
And the collier caught her squarely in the side. CHORUS

6. There were screams. there were shouts as the ships lights went out.
They took just four minutes to go down,
And though the collier's gallant crew managed to save just a few,
All the rest were either poisoned or drowned. CHORUS

7. Well, the inquest resolved that lessons should be learned
And rules of navigation put together,
And they stand to this day, and I'm very pleased to say
That they've cleaned up the black, stinking river. CHORUS

Geoff has brought up mass trespass songs on the April thread for Kinder but the largest mass trespass in England was Winter Hill in Lancashire on 6 September 1896 (although the people trespassed more than once).

Allen Clarke's song WILL YO’ COME O’ SUNDAY MORNING (known in several dialect variants, e.g. mornin') was published on thousands of song sheets for the 10,000+ trespassers and their supporters. I know a version is still sung but haven't yet found a recording online. Clarke was a well-known local writer and publisher of street literature and probably wrote other songs about events in Lancashire.

Will yo’ come o’ Sunday morning’
For a walk o’er Winter Hill?
Ten thousand went last Sunday
But there’s room for thousands still!

O the moors are rare and bonny
And the heather’s sweet and fine
And the roads across the hilltops –
Are the people’s – yours and mine!

WINTER HILL TRESPASS
Winter Hill Mass Trespass; "Will yo’ come o’ Sunday morning?" has been set to music by local singer Nat Clare.

An Easter Fair was once held on neighbouring Rivington Pike, and it is still the habit of many people in Bolton to climb to the summit on Good Friday.

1st September On this day in 1859, Pullman (sleeping cars) carriages were introduced, on the Bloomington to Chicago line.

CITY OF NEW ORLEANS written by Steve Goodman , and first recorded for his self-titled 1971 album, describing an overnight train ride from Chicago to New Orleans on the Illinois Central Railroad.

The sons of Pullman porters and the sons of engineers
All ride their Daddy's magic carpet, it's made of steam
Mothers with their babes asleep go rockin' to the gentle beat
And the rhythm of the rails is all they dream

2 September On this day in 1916,the last of the famous Blaydon races – immortalised in the folk song – in Northumberland were held.

BLAYDON RACES (Roud #3511) is a Geordie folk song, the words for which were written in the 19th century by Geordie Ridley, in a style deriving from music hall. Ridley's words were set to an existing American tune labelled "Brighton" in early publications of Ridley's song, which refers to an American song called "On the Road to Brighton". The Brighton referred to is a town in Massachusetts. Wikipedia

2 September on this day in 1834, Thomas Telford, Scottish engineer, road, bridge and canal builder, died in London and was buried in Westminster Abbey.

TELFORD’S BRIDGE by John Warner; The navigation canals that criss-cross England are magnificent feats of engineering and recall a gruelling but picturesque lifestyle. Typical of adventurous Victorian engineers, Thomas Telford chose to take his canal in a flying leap of iron 120 feet above a river. John did NOT cross this bridge in a canoe, he walked across holding Margaret's hand.

So butter some bread, Sally, brew us some tea,
For it's cold on old Telford's Bridge over the Dee.

2 September; On this day in 1906, Roald Amundsen, the first person to reach the South Pole, completed his sailing around Canada’s Northwest Passage.

Nic Jones sings LORD FRANKLIN
’Twas homeward bound one night on the deep, Swinging in my hammock I fell asleep.
I dreamed a dream and I thought it true Concerning Franklin and his gallant crew.

With a hundred seamen he sailed away To that frozen ocean in the month of May
To seek a passage around the Pole Where we poor sailors do sometimes go.

Victor Jara was arrested on September 12, 1973 - one day after the military coup led by General Augusto Pinochet against the government of President Salvador Allende, elected in 1970. Jara was held with 5,000 others in the capital's biggest stadium. On September 16, he was relentlessly tortured and then shot 44 times. His body, along with those of other victims of torture, was dumped on a Santiago street. This year, Chile will mark the 50th anniversary of the events.

Victor Jara of Chile
Lived like a shooting star
He fought for the people of Chile
With his songs and his guitar
His hands were gentle, his hands were strong

Arlo Guthrie released VICTOR JARA on his album Amigo in 1976. It began as a poem by Adrian Mitchell, and Arlo Guthrie set the poem to music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4BdVB5t_Vg&t=16s Victor Jara

4 September On this date in 1886, Geronimo, Apache chief and leader of the last great Native American rebellion, surrendered in Arizona to General Nelson Miles.

GERONIMO’S CADILLAC; Michael Martin Murphey was originally inspired to write this after seeing a photograph of Geronimo sitting in a Cadillac. He told American Songwriter magazine July/August 1987: "The two images together - Geronimo and a Cadillac - just struck me as a song title. It was every irony I could ever think of about our culture in two words. Their attempt to make of him what we would define as a civilized person. That was the reason they put him in a Cadillac in the first place. He was actually in jail at the time."

4 September On this date in 1870, Emperor Napoleon III, nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte, was deposed and the Third Republic declared in France.

L’EMPEROR, SA FEMME ET LE PETIT PRINCE is a French folk song of the second half of the 19th century, making a reference to Napoleon III, Empress Eugénie and the Prince impérial. [All three are buried in Saint Michael's Abbey, a Benedictine abbey in Farnborough, Hampshire.] This song is used to teach the days of the week to children in French. Wikipedia

Lundi matin, L’empereur, sa femme et le p’tit prince

5 September On this day in 1847, Jesse James, American outlaw, was born near Kansas City. With his elder brother Frank, he led the first gang to carry out train robberies.

JESSE JAMES is a 19th-century American folk song, first recorded by Bentley Ball in 1919 and subsequently by many others, including Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger and The Kingston Trio.

But that dirty little coward That shot Mr. Howard
Has laid poor Jesse in his grave.

'Twas on September the eighteenth day In spite of dashing salt sea spray,
We landed safe in the Crimea Upon our route for Alma.

20 September; On this day in 1854, the Battle of Alma was fought by the British, French and Ottoman forces against the Russians in the Crimean war, and produced six winners of the Victoria Cross.

THE BATTLE OF ALMA [Roud 1221; Ballad Index DalC216; trad.] This song from the repertoire of the Copper Family is printed in The Copper Family Song Book. Bob and John Copper sang The Battle of Alma in 1971 on their Leader box set A Song for Every Season. John Copper and Jon Dudley recorded it in 1987 for the Copper Family’s EFDSS LP Coppersongs: A Living Tradition.

THE SCHOONER BLIZZARD
The twenty-eight September, lads, I'll ne'er forget that day,
The wind blew from the southwest as we got her under way.
We headed out the bay, my boys, thinking that all was right,
But little did we think we had no oil to burn that night.

28 September 929    King Wenceslaus of Bohemia, GOOD KING WENCESLAS of the Christmas carol, was murdered by his younger brother, Boleslaw.

There are many English and Irish customs about Michaelmas, 29 September or Old Michaelmas Day, 10 October.

Across the British isles it was believed, and is possibly still believed, that eating blackberries after the 29th September was a bad idea. In the Western Antiquary of 1882, it is reported that: Whilst walking the country around [Exeter], a young friend who was with me warned me against picking any blackberries: Because’ said he, grimly ‘it’s past Michaelmass Day and the Devil’s been at 'em." Traditionalcustoms

Traditions from Sussex and Hertfordshire say the Devil is abroad on 10th October, and from Worcestershire and Norfolk where it’s 11th October. That’s a difference of eleven days (inclusive or exclusive) and if you know anything about the English folk calendar, this figure will ring a bell, because 10th October is Old Michaelmas Day. Folklorethursday

Colum Sands has a song which mentions blackberries and September, though not the Devil, on his latest CD, Song Bridge. Before Winter Sets In;

September looks out as the evening draws in,
Her colours are coaxing the spiders to spin.
They'll lay out their lace in the dew of the whin,
For they've plenty to do before winter sets in.

And down the long lane with many's the turning,
Back-to-school children are laughing and learning.
We'll follow the field to the blackberry hill,
See the black, red and green and the blossom there still.

Wikipedia

Robert Ford, who killed Jesse, was a James' gang member. Mr. Howard was the alias that James lived under in Saint Joseph, Missouri at the time of his killing.

L’EMPEROR, SA FEMME ET LE PETIT PRINCE is a French folk song of the second half of the 19th century, making a reference to Napoleon III, Empress Eugénie and the Prince impérial. THE RIPE AND BEARDED BARLEY   aka ALL AMONG THE BARLEY
Come, ye rout, it's now September,
The Hunter's Moon's begun.
And through the wheat and stubble,
We hear the frequent gun.
The leaves are fading yellow,
And burning into red,
While the ripe and bearded barley Is hangin' down it's head

THE SCHOONER BLIZZARD
The twenty-eight September, lads, I'll ne'er forget that day,

We headed out the bay, my boys, thinking that all was right,
But little did we think we had no oil to burn that night.

At Hindhead, Surrey, the Sailor’s Stone bears the inscription;
ERECTED In detestation of a barbarous Murder Committed here on an unknown Sailor On September 24th 1786
By Edwd. Lonegon, Mich. Casey & Jas. Marshall Who were all taken the same day And hung in Chains near this place.
Whoso sheddeth Man's Blood by Man shall his Blood be shed.

THE UNKNOWN SAILOR by Henry Peacock
To the tune of ‘The Calico Printer’s Clerk’ written by Dave Moran after The Halliard found the words in the Harkness Collection of broadsides at the Harris Library, Preston.

From his home in London An Able Seaman strode
Back to his ship he made his trip Upon the Portsmouth Road
At the village inn in Thursley He stopped to buy a round
And there three men he did befriend They too were Portsmouth bound

Chorus; As you travel on life’s journey You’ll meet your fellow man
But take great care, for while you share Others take what they can

On the lonely climb up Hindhead Those men made their attack
And with a knife they took his life And made off with his pack
Now those cut-throats hang in irons On the top of Gibbet Hill
To show us all what will befall Those who treat others ill

Chorus

A stone stands by the wayside To mark where he was killed
All travellers know no grass will grow Where that red blood was spilled
In quiet Thursley churchyard The unknown sailor sleeps
His kin still yearn for his return From sailing on the deep

Chorus

A sailor leads a hard life He knows tragedy and woe
He has to brave the restless wave Wherever he may go
Our sailor and his shipmates From danger daily strode
But he died alone, his name unknown Upon the Portsmouth Road

Chorus

Could not find a recording of the Halyard’s song but there is another song telling the same story on YouTube.
