Subject: BS: 'Armageddon' From: Skivee Date: 29 Jan 12 - 06:57 PM Entertaining brain candy, or incredibly dumb movie that ignored basic science, and based on cliches that by comparison made "Deep Impact" look like it was written by Shakespeare and Carl Sagan? Discuss. Make sure to include examples and show your work. |

You know we're sitting on four million pounds of fuel, one nuclear weapon and a thing that has 270,000 moving parts built by the lowest bidder. Makes you feel good, doesn't it? |

Makes you feel good, doesn't it? That, IMHO, was the best line in the film. I also liked the Aerosmith song. I did think that Deep Impact was, by far, the better of the two films, less about the gung ho and more concentrating on the human aspect, but you have to watch these type of movies with a real suspension of belief. Entertaining brain candy would seem to sum it up. |

Subject: RE: BS: 'Armageddon' From: Becca72 Date: 30 Jan 12 - 08:36 AM I love the movie - I have to stop and watch where ever I stumble in when it's on TV. I still weep like a 3 year old when Bruce Willis is saying goodbye to his daughter. I'm getting a little teary just thinking of it now.. |

Subject: RE: BS: 'Armageddon' From: GUEST,999 Date: 30 Jan 12 - 09:15 AM Eureka. I have the laptop on an angle with space beneath it because I don't want it overheating and burning the town down. After five months I finally realized that that's why thread titles and their respective numbers to the right have been such a problem. Just thought I'd share that little snippet of information. |

Subject: RE: BS: 'Armageddon' From: Don Firth Date: 30 Jan 12 - 04:45 PM Apart from a few little gaffs like space shuttles maneuvering like fighter planes and the idea of blowing up a huge asteroid on a collision course with the earth and turning it into a rain of smaller asteroids to pummel the earth with, it was one helluva movie! My favorite line in the movie (which I can't remember exactly, but it goes sort of like this): They're trying to get the stalled shuttle restarted so they can blast off the asteroid before the nuke they planted explodes. Female American astronaut is messing with some electronic equipment. Russian cosmonaut say, "Let me take a look at it." She says, "No, this equipment is classified!" He shoulders her aside and say, "So what!? All this stuff is made in Taiwan!" Don Firth |

Subject: RE: BS: 'Armageddon' From: gnu Date: 31 Jan 12 - 06:48 PM The 5th had some good sci-fi and spefex. Yes, spefex. It's a new word I just made up. No, I don't text. Why do you ask? I haven't watched a movie in years. Maybe I'll try after the Superbowl. |
Subject: RE: BS: 'Armageddon' From: Skivee Date: 01 Feb 12 - 12:37 AM Both films are silly but 5th is just lots better storytelling. It kicks ass and takes names by comparison. I consider 5th Element to be the Anti-Armageddon. If they had made a stack of the dumb technical errors in Armageddon, the paper would have easily cushioned the impact of that big rock. And speaking of rocks, that's what Mila Jovavich does. "Multi-Pass?" |
Subject: RE: BS: 'Armageddon' From: GUEST Date: 01 Feb 12 - 06:40 PM Years ago, I lived in Brooklyn, NY and there was a business down the street from me called "Armageddon Carpet Cleaners". I didn't have any carpets, but to this day, I wish I did, because I'd love to know what their cleaning methods involved. |
Subject: RE: BS: 'Armageddon' From: Nigel Parsons Date: 02 Feb 12 - 06:54 AM Maybe it's just that the owner is from Megiddo? |
Subject: RE: BS: 'Armageddon' From: Bev and Jerry Date: 02 Feb 12 - 05:46 PM Megiddo is a National Park in the Galilee (northern) part of Israel. We visited there last year and it's an amazing place with ruins dating back many thousands of years. The site is on a hill and the Hebrew word for hill is (transliterated) har - har Megiddo or Armageddon. Bev and Jerry |
Subject: RE: BS: 'Armageddon' From: Skivee Date: 03 Feb 12 - 03:00 AM Something tells me that their pick up and delivery doesn't extend that far. So here's your question: the people of that place might try to stop use of their name for such a suck film. this may seem extreme, but who among them could we blame if they opted to stone the cast first? |
