Subject: RE: Carol of the Bells From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 24 Nov 03 - 01:44 PM A lot of fakelore on this song. It is Not pre-Christian. Music composed by Mykola Leontovich, 1877-1921, but partly based on the traditional Ukrainian New Year's Eve song, "Shchedry Vechir." Leontovich is known primarily for his choral works, and his unfinished opera, "On Rusalka's Easter." Lyrics of the popular American carol (Hark how the bells, Sweet silver bells, All seem to say, Throw cares away), copyright 1936, was composed by Peter J. Wilhousky, American choral director, composer and educator (1902-1978). he also is known for his band arrangement of "Battle Hymn of the Republic." |
Subject: Lyr Add: CAROL OF THE BELLS (Wilhousky, Leontovich From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 24 Nov 03 - 08:28 PM CAROL OF THE BELLS (Tune- Mikola D. Leontovich, 1916, lyrics Peter J. Wilhousky, 1936) Hark! how the bells Sweet silver bells All seem to say Throw cares away. Christmas is here Bringing good cheer To young and old Meek and the bold. Ding Dong Ding That is their song With joyful ring All caroling. One seems to hear Words of good cheer From everywhere Filling the air. Oh how they pound Raising the sound O'er hill and dale Telling their tale. Gaily they ring While people sing Songs of good cheer Christmas is here. Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas On on they send On without end Their joyful tone To every home. Tune- Mikola D. Leontovich, 1916, lyrics Peter J. Wilhousky, 1936. The tune is based on a Ukrainian folk melody, Shchedry Vechir, but with changes. @carol, @christmas Listen to an arrangement from Mexico (scroll down, under Covers): Bells?? |
Subject: RE: Carol of the Bells From: clueless don Date: 25 Nov 03 - 11:41 AM One minor correction to the words given by Q: in the third "verse", the line "Ding Dong Ding" should be "Ding Dong Ding Dong". Don |
Subject: Lyr Add: CAROL OF THE BELLS From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 25 Nov 03 - 12:36 PM "Correction" does not fit the printed text that I have. However, without the original sheet music, I cannot say for certain- I remain clueless as well, Don. Sheet music still in the copyright range, so there are many "near" versions. Most song books do have the ding dong ding dong but to me, Ding dong ding "sings" better. Here is an entirely different set of words, source unknown, from a Hawaiian source. CAROL OF THE BELLS (2) Ring Christmas bells Merrily ring Tell all the world Jesus is King Loudly proclaim With one accord The happy tale Welcome the Lord. Ring Christmas bells Sound far and near The birthday of Jesus is here Herald the news To young and old Tell it to all In every tongue. Ring Christmas bells Tell loud and long Your message sweet Peal and prolong Come all ye people Join in the singing Repeat the story Told by the ringing. Ring Christmas bells Throughout the earth Tell the glad news Of Jesus' birth Loudly proclaim With one accord The happy tale Welcome the Lord. Subject: RE: Carol of the Bells (Shchedrik) From: Joe Offer Date: 25 Nov 03 - 02:45 PM For the sake of completeness, I'm going to post the Cyrillic lyrics MMario linked to, and see if people can read them here. It partly depends on how your browser is set. If you go to view/encoding on your browser toolbar, you should find a Cyrillic font. Of course, if your browser is set to Cyrillic, you won't be able to read other things, like Irish. I have to say that these lyrics I've copy-pasted below aren't as well-documented as I'd like, but I found them interesting. -Joe Offer- BRAMA Traditions Bulletin Board by pani Natalka Kononenko ] [ FAQ ] Posted by Serhii on January 10, 2003 at 15:29:09: In Reply to: ukr. lyrics to shchedryk posted by natalka on December 29, 2002 at 23:27:10: : I would like to find, online, the full lyrics, in Ukranian, to M. Leontovich's Shchedryk, schedryk, shchedrivochka... : I appreciate any help in this search. : N Originally 'Shcedryk' ( ' Carol of the bells' in Amerika) isn't a carol at all. It is shcedrivka and belongs to another holiday - New Year ( Shcedryj Vechir or Malanka). So its wonderful lyrics says about coming spring ,etc. I tried to find you something at meta-ukraine.com (searchng system in Ukraine) but they do not give the lyrics and history of 'Shcedryk'. Hope you can use my message. Thank you for the qestion. Here is the information from the Ukranian site Q linked to above. I'm posting it just in case the site disappears, but you really should see the site itself (click). It has the Cyrillic script as a JPG that can be read in any browser.
