A program designed to entertain people much like the soap operas were. However, Survivor doesn't have the depth of intellectual content that the soaps did.

I'm assuming this is one of those 'let's put lots of people who are characteristically opposite , politically or religiously opposed and traditionally antagonistic to each other, into a stressful situation that would never happen in real life and see what we get' programmes.

I know people that eat this crap up. They love it. I told one guy I wouldn't watch it not only because I thought the race issue was cheap but because I don't watch Survivor anyway--never have. Everytime I try to watch it, I swear to god I just want to beat Jeff Probst to a pulp--HE BUGS ME BIG TIME!!! I don't know why, but I'd like to fucking kill him with my bare hands. It shocks me that I should hate him that much when there's much worse people to hate than him but I can't deny I want to do this man great bodily harm. I've even entertained the idea of possibly trying out for Survivor just so I could meet Jeff Probst and give him the beat-down my very soul seems to crave. I hope I don't sound abnormal. I would think anyone with a brain would agree with me on this one. He's celeb so no one would really miss him but his fans and they don't matter.

I heard an interview with one of the producers. According to him, it was a response (a sort of "throwing up of the hands") to all the complaints they get every year, year after year, that, one way or another, they have always skewed the contest racially. They figgered, "what the hell, if we're going to get accused of it year after year when it's NOT our intent, let's just have a truly race-based contest".

that's how I heard it anyway.

I always thought they should have a Survivor where they take middle class folks and plant them in the heart of a big city with no money, no place to live and no food. I wonder what would happen. Would some find jobs? Find shelters? Soup kitchens? Beg? Steal? I think that would be a real test of survival.

Oh, I wouldn't take the "Survivor Race War" too seriously-- the producers manipulate everything on these shows, so I am sure there will be a wonderully touching resolution with alliances bewteen individuals/races. In the end, it'll all come down to a warm, fuzzy message about "we all need each other-- strength through diversity" sort of stuff.

That will be nice, won't it? But it will be as falsely based as the rest of the shows' premises.

I think I disagree Susan. The ratings will soar if there is perceived or genuine racial animosity, so the producers will be doing all they can to foster it IMO.

Susan I would love to take your bet but I am thinking that if I should lose I would have to make a donation I cannot afford. There are several charities to which I used to donate regularly, and which I have had to jetison in the last year or so. I can not justify donating to Mudcat before I resume my support for the others.

Although I have considerable confidence in television network cynicism, if I am to take the bet I must nevertheless be prepared to lose, and unfortunately at the moment I am not.

Still it'll be interesting to see how it pans out. I won't be watching it either, so I guess it'll be interesting to read about how it pans out.

I have just basic cable tv and I'm not sure if Survivor is offered there. I did watch something like it, I suppose, one season. It was called 'The Mole' or something like that. I don't know if it's still going.

If I had the time I would watch more television than I do. There are some interesting things on it. These days, when I have the time, I watch C-Span and another one (Channels 21 and 22) C-Span often has Congressional hearings and speeches on and the other channel often has book authors presenting their material.

Last week on C-Span I watched a GOP thing where one after another legislator extolled the virtues of our president. I didn't know that they really do like him. If they really do- these days one cannot tell.
