JOE McCARTHY IS COMIN' TO TOWN

Folk Singer Joe Glazer wrote this parody about Senator McCarthy titled “Joe McCarthy is Comin’ to Town” (1951) sung to the tune of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”.

You’d better beware, you’d better be good,
You’d better do only the things that you should.
Joe McCarthy’s coming to town.

He’ll call you a pink, he’ll call you a red,
He’ll drive every liberal thought from your head.
Joe McCarthy’s coming to town.

He knows when you’re subversive, he knows each move you make;
His gumshoe boys are watching, so be good for McCarthy’s sake.

So you’d better play safe, don’t talk and don’t read,
Don’t write and don’t join if you want to succeed.
Joe McCarthy’s coming to town.

If you’ve got a book whose cover is red,
When you start to read look under the bed,
Cause Joe McCarthy’s coming to town.

If you go to church to pray or to wed,
You’d better make sure that the preacher’s not red,
Cause Joe McCarthy’s coming to town.

Now if you are a teacher and you want to get ahead,
Don’t mention Thomas Jefferson, talk about Joe McCarthy instead.

So, you’d better play safe, don’t talk and don’t read,
Don’t write and don’t join, if you want to succeed,
Joe McCarthy’s coming to town.

Be careful who your friends are, be careful what you say.
Don’t be too controversial, or McCarthy will get you some day.

So, get rid of your brains and you’ll never go wrong,
You’ll always be safely sailing along,
When Joe McCarthy’s coming to town.

THE BLECKELL MURRYNEET

Or, "Blackwell Merry Night" in more standard dialect -- a "merry night" in the borders, especially Cumbria, being a big party at a public house. This one, in a song written by Robert Anderson (1770-1833), took place on "the last of December" 1802 or 1803.

JOHN FUDSTON
concerns the execution of said murderer, which took place on December 29, 1825.

MUDCAT, DT lyrics: John Fudston
/mudcat.org/@displaysong.cfm?SongID=3241

On the twentieth of December, in the morning quite soon,
He called to the sheriff to confess what he'd done;
He confessed to his God for the crime he had done,
He said he was a murderer, his race it was run.

6 Dec 1921, the Anglo-Irish treaty was signed. One war ended and another - the Irish Civil War - was soon to start. What songs would you recommend to mark the occasion? One that springs to mind for me is a relatively recent composition by Brian Moore (1946-2011)
THE BALLAD OF MICHAEL COLLINS   aka Hang Out Your Brightest Colours

Returning then to London town, who will take the blame?
The Treaty lies before him, Michael Collins adds his name.
There's a darker time upon the land, who will bear the load?
An awkward hero in an armoured car on an Irish country road.

Hang out your brightest colours and his memory now recall
For each one wants a part of him, no one wants it all

December 28, 1879: The bridge over the Tay at Dundee collapsed taking a passenger train down with it.

The event inspired a famous poem by Theodor Fontane and an infamous one by William McGonagall (see Mudcat thread), neither having been set to music as far as I know.

BALLAD OF THE TAY RAIL BRIDGE
by B Yellow

The station was so dark, so quiet and still,
There was nothing in the air, the air was bracing,
Christmas day had passed, he was coming home, your loved one.
And over the valleys people crying out loud,
A storm was on its way,
The memories of Christmas day flashed before your eyes,
When the truth came out.

December 24, 1913: At a Christmas party organized by striking miners in Calumet, Michigan, someone shouted "Fire," and during the ensuing rush for the exit, 79 people, including 54 children, were crushed to death. It is very widely believed that the culprit was an opponent of the union. (Wikipedia)

As I noted in my 6 Dec message, that date marked the signing of the Anglo-Irish treaty.
Another song for the occasion is THE IRISH FREE STATE by Patrick Galvin. It is the opening song in this video of a Treaty Songs programme at the (Irish) National Concert Hall, Dublin in Dec 2021
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwGXdOtgeWY
There's also a new song by Duke Special about ERSKINE CHILDERS . I haven't watched the full programme yet, but hope there will be some other noteworthy songs. I'm just about to listen to Karan Casey sing two songs she has written about Kathleen Clarke.

/mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=170729 THE KINGSTOWN DISASTER
by Johnny McEvoy

recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4S96bsaiQ8

It was Christmas Eve in eighteen ninety-five
The biggest storm in years was blowing wild
Never had we seen it’s like before
As we drifted helpless towards the Kingstown shore

The wind was blowing like a wild banshee
Our ship was tossed upon the raging sea

Each man on board believed it was the end
We thought we’d never see our homes again
Suddenly there came a mighty sound
Our sails in shreds as they came tumbling down

How nobody died I’ll never know
As we ran aground upon the rocks below
We prayed to God to see us through the night
We had many hours to go before day-light

When suddenly we heard somebody call
“Stand fast me boys we’ll save you one and all

With burning eyes, we stared into the night
I must admit it was a wonderous sight
The Kingstown lifeboat drawing up abeam
Our eyes could not believe the sight we’d seen

Hold tight me boys we’ll throw to you a line
To tell the truth we haven’t got much time
The tide is turning fast before our eyes
We’ve got to get you off before sunrise

Then through the night there came a mighty roar
A towering wave of twenty feet or more
Came crashing down upon the men below
Such fear and terror you could never know

Splintered timbers scattered all around
Of those brave men there wasn’t sight nor sound
Capsized and smashed into a million parts
tnough to break a hardened sailor’s heart

Alex Williams was the cockswain’s name
His likes I know we’ll never see again
Fifteen men and boys were lost that night
Gone to their reward before daylight

Saint Stephen’s day they laid them in their grave
Wives and mothers prayed their souls to save
And we stood by just glad to be alive
That Christmas time in eighteen ninety-five.

HOMELESS WASSAIL by Ian Robb

"Wassail, wassail,all over the town,
Our cup is white and our ale is brown"
But huddled on the iron grate
we poor and hungry curse our fate.

This song was originated by
Finest Kind and has been covered by many others. See thread. It's very much in the tradition of older works:

THE DITCHLING CAROL

And all remember, gentles gay:
For you who bask in fortune's ray
The year is all a holiday.
The poor have only Christmas.

See
Mudcat, Mainly Norfolk, and YouTube search.

REMEMBER THE POOR [The Snow Is on the Ground]

Cold winter is come with its keen cutting breath,
And the birds is all dropped from the trees.
All nature seems touched at the finger of death,
And the streams are beginning to freeze.
When the hills and the dales are all covered in white
And Flora attends us no more,
When you sit by your fireside, reviving and hot,
Will you grumble to think on the poor?

Recorded by
Jeff Warner, Waterson:Carthy, and others. See Mudcat and Mainly Norfolk.

Is the premise from the beginning of the thread still valid? :

"The songs-of-the-month threads need one for December that does not include anything specifically about the solstice or midwinter holidays, those having their own."

@Reinhard: excellent question. It was me who proposed having a separate non-holiday thread, but Geoff's the one running the "months" project, so if he thinks separating them out isn't a good idea, he's no doubt right.

I think having one thread for Christmas and St Stephen's day songs (and maybe other holidays such as Chanukah and Kwanza) and one for other December songs (secular Dec songs?) was a good idea.

If Geoff doesn't mind the work, he could sub-divide the index by song type.

THE CUTTY WREN

26 December is sometimes called St Stephen's Day or Wren Day. The song is thought by some to represent the human sacrifice of the Year King, or the symbolic substitute slaughter of the wren as "king of the birds" at the end of the year for similar purposes, and such songs are traditionally sung on Boxing Day (26 December), just after the winter solstice.

THE PORT ADMIRAL

'Twas at the landing-place
    That's just below Mount Wyse,
Poll leaned against the sentry's box,
A tear in both her eyes,
Her apron twisted round her arms,
All for to keep them warm,
It being a windy Christmas Day,
    And also a snowstorm.
