odd the tomato juice didn't work - it worked beautifully on our Old English Sheepdog the time she was skunked - though it did turn her pink - which she found horribly embarassing! she sulked in her doghouse until all the pink wore off.

You might check with an area janitorial supply--they have products with enzymes that can safely remove odors of all sorts.

Among the more common ones listed by several "Breed Sites" is this:

1 quart 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
1/4 cup Baking Soda
1 teaspoon liquid soap
(Dawn Dishwashing Detergent is often recommended, but any dish soap will work)

Mix in a bucket or bowl; it will be fizzy, a clue that you shouldn't try to mix it or store it in a bottle or other closed container. Thoroughly wet your dog with the solution. Knead it well into his coat, to chemically alter every bit of the thiols on his hair. Be careful to keep the formula out if the dog's eyes, nose and mouth; you can use a sponge to carefully wipe it onto his face. Follow the bath with a thorough rinse.

You may wind up with some combination. Just like us, dogs have different oils in their skin and hair types that means rarely is there ONE answer.

When I worked at a veterinary hospital quite a few years ago, we used Massingill douche. It worked pretty well. But that was back in the late '70s. There may be better products available these days.

Having been sprayed twice myself, I can tell you that when the spray gets into hair (it permanently embeds itself in the protein of the hair, or fur, as the case may be), it never comes out completely. But since dogs shed their fur quite regularly, it shouldn't take more than a year or two for it to go away completely. Until then, the dog may smell a bit skunky when it gets wet.

Since I have very long hair, it took several years before people stopped sniffing around and looking puzzled whenever I entered a room with wet hair.

Boy, do I remember THAT smell...

We had a big German Shepherd with a long coat when I was a kid. She got skunked on vacation and we couldn't do anything but wash her in the lake - sure feel sorry for that lake - and drive home in the car with everyone hanging thier head out the windows, like something out of Gary Larson.

We ended up giving her the closest haircut a dog has ever had without actually being a Mexican Hairless. STill took 6 months to lose the stench.

Living with 3 rambunctious corgis in a rural area, I appreciate the tips here and have added them to my canine home remedy lists. In the 21 years I've been here I've not had a dog skunked (she said, fervently knocking on every piece of wood available), but I worry about it a lot! Thanks...

Ours got skunked once and although the tomato juice worked on him, it never worked on his leather collar. On a hot, damp day, it would stink, so we had to throw it out.

Glad there aren't skunks in Britain. It's a smell that you can't even describe to the Brits ...

There are no skunks in Britain? What about France? There is a WORD for skunk in French, so I always thought there were European skunks, but maybe only on the mainland?

To describe skunk: think of the smell of really REALLY good weed, multiplied till it hurts.

vinegar may help--of the apple cider variety-- acetic acid may neutralize the essence of PePe Le Peau.. i think there are civit cats in europe,,, their glandular sevretions are used to get fine perfume to "stick" (not stink) we have 2 varieties of skunk here-- spotted and striped..the striped ones are more agile and more streamlined.. and more able to run away as a defense, so less likelyto squirt-0-however when they do, they stand on their front legs and lift rear (legs, tail and all) into the air to aim----and fire... all skunks patter their feet before spraying as a warning....if you are close enough" to watch their feet....watch out!!

I don't think eitheranise hyssop or "really good weed" smell ANYTHING like skunk ----on the other hand, rotting potatoes occasionaly will become very skunky...

Carol - Are you still stalking skunks??? Man, the hobbies some people have! I suggest creeping up on pigeons instead...it's more challenging and far more agreeable in every way. Skunks also make a really lousy pot pie.

Yo, Mickey... What I do when my ol' useless and toothless flea bitten hound gets skunked is take him to my couzin Rufus, who lives in half a double wide back up in the holler. Ya see, Rufus's wife Retha May... well she's a sweet as she can be an' do anything fir ya but the ol' gal weighs 'bout... oh.... a lot! Well, Retha May quit bathin' back during the Carter administration, I think... Read in some magazine that water washed away the helpful bacteria that eats them nema toads or frogs or something like that... Well, Iz not going into no further details here other than to say that havin' a skunked mut around gives ol' Rufus a little relief... So if all these things don't work, PM me an' I'll get you a map to the half a double wide. Oh yeah, Rufe, will even feed to the dog at his expense while the shunk wears off...

I don't know what the chemical makeup of Skunk stink is but I suspect It's Ammine based. Any weak acid ( tomatoe juice, viniger) will tend to neutralise the Ammines makeing less volatile Ammino-salts that smell less. This is why here in the UK we put Viniger on fish and chips (in the old days the fish was non-too fresh). A similar process applies to smelly weak acids such as butiric (vomit smell) but in this case you use a weak alkoli (Bicarb) to form less volatile salts. All the best PP

Listen, what say I just have Paw and Cletus come over to your friend's place for awhile. With that you have two options: First, they can fart on the dog and kill the skunk smell because nothing can stand up to an Iron City fart, OR, they could just hang around awhile and after getting a noseful of them, the dog won't seem so bad.
