GeoffLawes linked to 5 versions of Robin Williamson's "October Song" as well as an ISB (Incredible String Band) recording, but I feel moved to add a link to The Corries' beautiful version here :

as it was that version that my sister Alex and I used to sing "a cappella harmony" and we loved it!!

THE LOSS OF THE ELIZA

And storms have come to Newfoundland by stealth and treachery,
The foul nor'easter's chilly hand is black with tragedy;
So the brave schooner Eliza on this October day,
Must match her all unequal strength with furrows that cross her way.

Geoff, could you move An Chéad Mháirt den Fómhair to the September thread. The first Tuesday of autumn would fall between 21 and 27 Sept. In 1811 the date would have been 24 Sept., if I'm not mistaken.

Done Thank you, Felipa-Geoff

THE MEN OF NORTH LEW

Collected by Baring Gould.

The song tells of a Bell Ringing contest between the villages of North Lew and Broadwoodwidger both in Devon.
The first round took place in Ashwater and round two in Callington Cornwall. North Lew won both rounds.

The Bellringing Sung by Alan Rosevear in Exeter, Roud Number 1515. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gfxh49WAFvc

The Bellringing

One day in October, neither drunken nor sober,
O'er Broadbury Down I was mending my way,
When I heard of some ringing, some dancing and singing.
I'll always remember that Jubilee Day.

Chorus: 'Twas in Ashwater town, the bells they did sound,
They rang for a belt and a hat laced with gold.
And the men of Northlew rang so steady and true
That there never were better in Devon I hold.

'Twas misunderstood, for the men of Broadwood
Rang a peel on the tenor should never have been.
But the men of Northlew rang so steady and true,
A difficult matter to beat them I ween.
(Chorus)

Those of Broadwood being naughty, then said to our party,
We'll ring you a challenge again in a round.
We'll give you the chance in St. Stephen's by Launceston;
The prize to the winner a note of five pound.

Chorus: 'Twas in Callington town, the bells they did sound, etc.

So the match it went on, at good Callington,
And the bells they rang out o'er the valley below.
And the old and young people, the hale and the feeble,
They came out to hear the sweet bell music flow.

Chorus: 'Twas in Callington town, the bells they did sound, etc.

Those of Broadwood once more were obliged to give o'er,
They were beaten completely again in a round.
But the men of Northlew rang so steady and true;
No better than they in the West can be found.

Chorus: 'Twas in Ashwater town then in Callington Town, etc

Thank you GUEST,Derrick !

During last night's Zoom session of one of our local folk clubs, we were reminded that the Eyemouth tragedy took place during October. The singer had written her own song, of which I do not have the lyrics, but here is the late John Watt's song (copied from the DT)

EYEMOUTH TRAGEDY
(John Watt)

By the dire rocks o' Urquhart, though deadly were the signs
Out sailed the Eyemouth 'fyvies' with a thousand baited lines.
Though a glasslike sea and a cloudless sky made the elders bid them stay
But these are the times the brave men die, but the 'halflins" (?) held the sway.

Three leagues from the shore the lines were cast while the wind it held its breath
And the sails hung limp from every mast and the sea was still as death
For death was the bride that came that day, cut the ribbons from the creels
'Twas a raging wave hit Eyemouth town and took her bonny chiels.

There's many a bride has lost her groom as the death-toll quickly grew,
Craig's and Collin's met their doom, aye, Bargain and Fairbairn too
Maltman, Scott all Eyemouth bred, they died in the wind and rain
Oh, the flooer o' Eyemouth town lay dead, but her sons would rise again.

The grinding turn o' the hearse wheel in October '81
Made every man and woman kneel in prayer for Eyemouth's sons,
For this was the price they had to pay, the livin' and the dead
And the price that Eyemouth paid that day tae earn her daily bread.

One of the funniest versions of Tam o’Shanter that I have ever seen is as performed by The New Rope String Band. (The purist Burns scholars might not!) It is on YouTube in 2 sections, but the video doesn’t really do it justice : one of those where you really had to be there and see it live. There is some fiddling on it, but not really in the sense of setting the whole poem to a tune.
Here’s a link to part 1: Tam o’Shanter part 1

Subject: Taking Nelson Home (Ian Palmer)
From: Felipa
Date: 12 Oct 21 - 07:00 PM

there is a Mudcat thread called "2 songs for 21 October". One of the songs is Grey October, which is already on the October song list. The other is called TAKING NELSON HOME and marks Trafalgar Day, when Horatio Nelson defeated the French and Spanish fleets off the coast of Spain in 1805. Lyrics are given on that thread for both songs. A commentator suggests Mike O'Connor's song "Carrying Nelson Home".

JOHN’S GARDEN
by Peter Mayer

Farmer John wandered back
And when he reached the pumpkin patch, began to speak
He said "the weather's getting colder
Summer's over and it's almost Halloween
That's the day, the reason you were raised
When everything about your life will change
You will have eyes to see, and for that night, you'll be
A bright lamp burning in the darkness
But remember that candle shines for only the briefest time
In a jack-o-lantern's heart"

The pumpkins held a meeting then
Some were very apprehensive and afraid
"Could this really happen to us?
What could be the meaning?" is what they were saying
"This is home, it's all we've ever known"
Then one bold, outspoken pumpkin spokeHe said
"I don't need eyes to see , it sounds like a lie to me
I like it just fine here in John's garden
And remember that candle shines for only the briefest time
In a jack-o-lantern's heart"

There is much to ask and to ponder in the pumpkin patch
When imposing old October shows up at last
Then a pumpkin from the farther end
Who had been silent up till then
Over the commotion, said
"What would you rather have my friends
A chance to shine, or die here on the vine?
The better way seems very plain to me
You will have eyes to see, and for that night, you'll be
A bright lamp burning in the darkness
And maybe that candle shines for only the briefest time
In a jack-o-lantern's heart
Oh, but one goblin's smile should make it all well worth while
You know you might even see the starlight
And knowing that time is brief, makes it that much more sweet
When you have a jack-o-lantern's heart"

Some old salty, how he used to rock me.
Jelly roll or Jerry Lee, how he used to rock me.

Salt fare, North Sea,
Weird stare. Further than the eye can see.
He had a head like a toy shop, bow legged stance off,
Must have been the rolling sea.
Some old salty, how he used to rock me.

Jelly roll or Jerry Lee, how he used to rock me.
Hull Fair waltzers, bopping to Brenda Lee.
River boat jazz cruise, jiving to the Two-Nineteen.
Some old salty, how he used to rock me.

Jelly roll or Jerry Lee, how he used to rock me.
Down there for dancing, come on Mr Chester please.
Play "Deliah's gone" for one more round, some old Salty's on his feet.

Down "The Abercrombie"

PUNKIE NIGHT

Punkie Night is a traditional West Country holiday practised on the last Thursday of October in Somerset.Children will march around with a jack o'lantern, singing the following song :

It's Punkie Night tonight,
It's Punkie Night tonight.
Give us a candle,
Give us a light.
It's Punkie Night tonight.

It's Punkie Night tonight,
It's Punkie Night tonight.
Adam and Eve,
Just wouldn't believe
It's Punkie Night tonight.

The "Punkie Night Song" is sung to a tune similar to "The Farmer in the Dell".

Hi,

No idea what this was about, but nothing about Griet Zelle (performing under the name Mata Hari) suggests she was a spy. Since she lived so close-by in her youth, her history gets the occasional mention here. As the whole affair is more than a hundred years ago, the archives about her are now accessible to the public, but still nothing about spies. Griet fled when her father went broke, and she seems to have lived her life to always make sure people provided her with enough money. That's not really anything special, and neither is it that she liked boys wearing uniforms and boys not wearing uniforms.
If there is something to say about her, fine, but please write something that makes sense.

Bye

SONGS ABOUT JOHN BROWN

16 October 1859 - Abolitionist John Brown seized the Federal Arsenal at Harpers Ferry with about 20 followers. Three days later, Brown was captured and the insurrection was put down by U.S. Marines under the command of Col. Robert E. Lee. Brown was convicted of treason, murder, and inciting slaves to rebellion, and was hanged on December 2, 1859.
