Subject: Mudcat Censorship?
From: GUEST
Date: 12 Dec 01 - 08:54 PM

One of the greatest things about Mudcat is that it's not moderated.

Or at least it was...

Whilst I can fully understand personal attacks against an individual being deleted, I cannot understand the following:

In response to Song Challenge! 75 I wrote a little ditty about 'Martin' an unfortunate turkey. It was along these lines:

Martin is all alone
Martin hasn't got a home
Now that Martin is dead
He's keeping fat Americans fed

This message was deleted. Any explanation for this would be good.

Thank you

Dear Guest,

You're more than welcome in the Song Challenge! thread; but anonymous 'Guest's are not eligible for the Golden Cow Chip awards.

You've got a good start there with your one verse; why don't you flesh it out a bit with a few more verses, give us a tune to sing it by, and take on a handle so you can receive one of the wonderful mantle decorations for your efforts (or better yet, go on and join with a permanent name).

The Song Challenge!s are meant as an exercise for folks who like writing songs and like to have a good time. The 'challenge' is NOT between the Challenge!rs, but a challenge to each of your imaginations given a subject. They're a great 'writing block' buster, mind teaser, and general goodwill get-together. So, finish your ditty and make room on your mantle for a great award. And don't forget, everyone's a winner in the Song Challenge!

-- Áine

Perhaps the "clear entries" button was toggled instead of "submit message" button? I've accidentally done that to myself a time or two when using the web version of my email. It could have happened on this form.

Maybe Silly River's answer is correct--I never saw the post. I am not here 24/7, but I am here a lot--few minutes every couple of hours, (except after 10 PM my time which is Midnight Mudcat time, until 8 AM my time which is 10 AM Mudcat time)

I think SRS is onto the problem. Can't see why the lyrics would have been deleted by Joe or a Clone. Lord knows there's a lot worse (both morally and artisticly) in here all the time.

Well I saw it. And it ain't there now. That said, it could have ben a number of things but one thing I am pretty sure it was NOT is an exercise of censorial deletion.

On the other hand, Guest, I am sure you are capable of much better work than that little couplet -- for one thing, it doesn't scan, lacks imagination, and is crudely worded. Even in a world without censorship it didn't reflect your true talents, now did it?

C'mon back and fire up your best craft!

I'll vouch that that verse was there - I saw it.
Methinks it was deleted when Amos' italics were fixed. I give no suggestion as to the why of it tho.

Yes david, and I'm happy to provide it!

BTW Aine.......This one may interest you under the heading of "I'm Not Surprised:"

Pennsylvania state Rep. Jane Baker, 56, said she will run for a second term next year even though she told a jury recently that injuries from a traffic accident had left her largely cognitively disabled. Baker, who lives near Allentown, said she "needs help with reading and understanding material and carrying on conversations" due to head injuries and told the jury that in fact she is "virtually unemployable" except for her position in the Legislature. (The jury awarded her $2.9 million in November.) .........From the Allentown Morning Call of November 10.

Didn't we always know that it took damn little to be a politician?

Amos, I don't think the other guest was looking for a critcism of that sort. You have no idea if this was a first attempt, the age of the poster, nothing about him. Yet you say it doesn't scan, lacks imagination, and is crudely worded. To me that is being a bit too harsh, even unkind.

It wasn't "censored." Perhaps it was accidentally deleted by a "Clone." Such accidents are rare, but they can happen.

Well you can take anything out of context. I also said he was capable of much better, which is certainly true. You can take either side of the story you prefer if you can't take them both!!

Is that Turkey Master Alpha, or Turkey Master Beta? ;-)

Back to the original question, over the years I have seen a few of my posts disappear for no apparent reason. I think the most likely explanation is some sort of glitch that occurs on Mudcat now and then.

Don't like "moderated discussions?"

The newsgroups you should sought.
I hang out and troll, troll troll there, successfully, a lot.

Personally, I am ALL for a benevolent dictator, named J.O.

My posts, he has eliminated, DEFINATELY needed to go.

Many times, I wished I'd quit
Before, I hit the button "submit."

Thanks Joe, for being the lifeguard at the kiddy-pool.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

If any of my postings ever offended anyone, you should SEE the stuff Joe has elimenated...and with good cause too!"

Sorcha, who still remembers your first post to her.......
"just type the bloody lyrics in..........." because I was New and made the comment that I didn't have a scanner.... I've learned a lot since then; have you?

Gee Whiz GUEST, you've gotten away with LOTS worse before (I just looked up vegetarian anti-American posters who use words like 'whilst') so I hardly think your bad little poem was censored.

I know censorship has been done to death here, but I'm willing to give up the odd civil liberty to keep this site as pleasant as it usually is. Most sites that have NO censorship are simply free for alls, and it becomes much too hard to have a cohesive discussion. People who troll regularly are disturbed, they know it, but they can't resist the impulse, especially when it's alcohol fuelled. Maybe the word 'censorship' should be changed to 'weeding'. It still lets the grass grow.

Well, actually, Pene and I do monitor the Forum; and we do censor things, but very rarely. Pene didn't delete this one, and neither did I. It doesn't sound like anything we would even consider deleting. We delete personal attacks, Spam, and messages that overload Mudcat. We also delete messages that are posted solely to refresh threads that have no reason to be refreshed. We have ways of dealing with flamers and trolls that we will not discuss publicly (I think the reasons for that are obvious). I suppose there might be a few other types of messages we delete, but they're rare. Max told Pene and me to use our judgment, and we do.

Oh - we also delete messages in HTML practice threads, and in PermaThreads.

Right now, it is possible for JoeClones to delete messages by accident. Pene worked up a way to minimize that risk, but it isn't in place yet. His fail-safe method does work on the experimental version of Mudcat I'm using. That's a good thing, because I'm a bit of a klutz. The JoeClones are more adroit than I, so the risk of accidental deletion is minimal.

-Joe Offer-

Good Grief. The ghost of Christmas Past Present and Future must have been doing his stuff a bit early this year. Excellent.

That verse wouldn't need much tweaking to be ok enough.

For example:

Martin he was all alone
Martin hadn't got a home
Now old Martin, you are dead
Thanks to you, we're fat and fed.

Which would fit to Winster Gallop, for example.
