Subject: RE: Another Interesting BBC4 Eve From: Noreen Date: 04 Jan 03 - 01:28 PM Hey! I now have access to a digibox (I hope!) So tonight's 7.5 hrs of folkie programming: Sat 4 Jan 7:00 pm The Cambridge Folk Festival 2002 Mark Radcliffe and Eliza Carthy present two hours of highlights from the summer's friendliest festival. Artists include Iris De Ment, John Prine, Joe Strummer, Cara Dillon and the Be Good Tanyas. W/S. 9:00 pm Martin Carthy And Friends A unique concert from Islington's Union Chapel, exploring many of the songs and partnerships that have made Martin Carthy the touchstone of the English traditional folk scene for forty years. W/S. 10:30 pm Christy Moore Uncovered Christy Moore is joined by his 'ultimate band members' Donal Lunny and Declan Sinnott to interact, create and have fun. The artist performs his best work and gives insights into his music. W/S. 11:55 pm Down From The Mountain Storyville: An account of the concert, backstage preparations and rehearsals of American roots folk music featured in the Coen Brothers' film Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? W/S. 1:30 am Nick Drake: A Skin Too Few Nick Drake is one of rock's most tragically romantic figures. He died in 1974 at 26. The testimonies in this film describe an artist of integrity who symbolises the destructive effect of loneliness |

Subject: RE: Another Interesting BBC4 Eve From: fat B****rd Date: 04 Jan 03 - 03:48 PM I watched the Cambridge coverage until Joe Strummer (RIP) had done "I Fought The Law" at which point my wonderful wife offered to watch "Casualty" on the inferior upstairs telly. As I had just won 47 quid on the bonus ball I insisted that she watch it on the "posh" downstairs telly so's I could come up here and put this message on the 'cat. Loved the Cambridge prog. PS Is there a clever way of enabling me to video digital stations without a degree in electronics ??? |

Subject: RE: Another Interesting BBC4 Eve From: Ed. Date: 04 Jan 03 - 04:20 PM Fat B, at present you can only record the digital station that you are watching at the time |

Subject: RE: Another Interesting BBC4 Eve From: GUEST,Ralphie at work Date: 04 Jan 03 - 06:08 PM Ah...You can be cunning. My Digi box feeds the Video, witch then feeds the TV, so I can be recording something off Mr Dig, but, watching just the boring terrestrial channels.....Scart Hell I know... and if you want to get the sound into your Hi Fi.....took me several pieces of paper to work it out! Why not go to ASDA and buy another Vid for £50?? Cheers R |

Subject: RE: Another Interesting BBC4 Eve From: Geoff the Duck Date: 04 Jan 03 - 08:15 PM We enjoyed what we saw of the Carthy Concert - we didn't get the box set up until part way through. Is Saturday a regular Folk presence, or were we just lucky this week? Quack! GtD!and Mrs.Duck. |

Subject: RE: Another Interesting BBC4 Eve From: Ralphie Date: 05 Jan 03 - 06:07 AM Hello Ducklings!! When the Carthy concert was shown last year (c/w a documentary about his life) It prompted one of the biggest reactions (Positive!) that BBC4 has had. I presume that this is why they repeated the prog. It's not yet going to be a regular event, as far as I know...but why not fire off some E Mails to the BBC thanking them for at least starting to do something? I'm sure that there is a wealth of documentary material lying on various shelves out there, which would be of interest. (And incidentally, probably cheap!) Of course, all of these programmes should be on BBC2 so that the majority of viewers can watch them, but as I've said many times before...It's a start, and an improvement on Fame Academy!! Also, keep listening to Late Junction, Andy Kershaw, and World Routes on Radio 3, and Folk on 2 on Radio 2. Even R4 did its bit over Christmas with Georgina Boyes prog about the Sheffield Carols. I'm actually quite optimistic about Music programming on the BBC. And any helpful suggestions would be a good thing. So, get those E Mails in..!! Regards Ralphie |

Subject: RE: Another Interesting BBC4 Eve From: GUEST Date: 06 Jan 03 - 05:16 AM The BBC received the largest ever response for BBC4 programme when the Martin Carthy programmes were first broadcast last year (shown again on Sat 4th Jan). I urge those who saw the folk evening on BBC on 4th Jan, to write to the BBC and congratulate them on a wonderful evening of programmes, and suggest that they should show more of them! |
|
Subject: RE: Another Interesting BBC4 Eve From: BanjoRay Date: 06 Jan 03 - 06:39 AM Maybe they could show the second series of Transatlantic Sessions on BBC4, so the bit of the UK that isn't Scotland could see them. Cheers Ray |
|
Subject: RE: Another Interesting BBC4 Eve From: GUEST Date: 06 Jan 03 - 06:41 AM Well said, Ray. A repeat of the first series would be welcome too. |

Subject: RE: Another Interesting BBC4 Eve From: JudeL Date: 06 Jan 03 - 07:21 AM Have just emailed the BBC using their feedback page on their website to praise BBC4 line up last sat night and to ask for more like it suggesting some of the artists I would like to see. If others want to send their comments try clicking on this (hoping my link will work) http://www.bbc.co.uk/feedback/ |

Subject: RE: Another Interesting BBC4 Eve From: Ralphie Date: 06 Jan 03 - 11:47 AM Jude...Thanks for the link...! Anymore suggestions chaps??? List them here, and E Mail the Beeb...!! Lets turn BBC4 into a Music station..(Mind you the prog on Scandinavian Sex tonight at 2210 might be worth a look!) Regards Ralphie |

Subject: RE: Another Interesting BBC4 Eve From: GUEST Date: 07 Jan 03 - 06:29 AM Micca and Bullfrog, The Scandinavian Sex prog, I presume? ;-) |
|
Subject: RE: Another Interesting BBC4 Eve From: mouldy Date: 08 Jan 03 - 02:23 AM I mailed them too and got an acknowledgement. It was an automatically generated one, but it did say that all comments &c get circulated on a daily basis. Interesting little snippet I heard on the radio this morning, though:- the BBC reckon only 4000 watch the main progs on BBC4. Let's hope they all like folk and let the BBC know! Andrea |

Subject: RE: Another Interesting BBC4 Eve From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 08 Jan 03 - 02:50 AM I mailed BBC4 and the BBC in general, not being sure which went where; and mentioned that those license payers who don't have access to digital channels, but who have helped to pay for the programmes, might like to see them too. On BBC2 perhaps. Forlorn hope, I know. Ian Anderson of fRoots posted the following on uk.musicfolk yesterday: Regular Friday nights roots-and-beyond on BBC 4 TV Best of Womad 10/1 Robert Wyatt doc 17/1 Compay Segundo concert 24/1 Youssou N'Dour BBC4 session 31/1 Richard Thompson: Solitary Man doc February 7 Norah Jones, Natalie Cole, Cassandra Wilson and Diana Krall concerts 14/2 Celtic Connections 1 & Sinead O'Connor concert 21/2 Celtic Connections 2 28/2 March Fridays tba Radio 3 World Music Awards 28/3 All BBC4; transmission times unknown as yet. |

Subject: RE: Another Interesting BBC4 Eve From: Ralphie Date: 08 Jan 03 - 07:27 AM Malcolm... Wonderful news...particularly the Robert Wyatt prog. One of my all time faves! Please circulate. As I've said before, maybe this is the way forward for TV in the UK. Praise should be heaped on BBC4 for daring to broadcast what would never get by the mandarins of BBC1 and 2. I'm working on the World Music awards anyway, so I'll see far to much of it (particularly the cables!!), Onwards and upwards. Suddenly the New Year doesn't seem so bleak. Regards Ralphie |

Subject: RE: Another Interesting BBC4 Eve From: Ralphie Date: 09 Jan 03 - 05:37 AM To add to the list Friday, 17th Jan...2030-2100 Musical Traditions...South Donegal Fiddle. Just before the Robert Wyatt doc 2100-2210. Better go and buy some blank tapes! Can our US friends tell me if BBC4 is available over there?? On the Web perhaps? I can imagine that there would be a lot of people around the world who'd like to see some of this stuff. Ralphie |

Subject: RE: Another Interesting BBC4 Eve From: Bullfrog Jones Date: 09 Jan 03 - 12:35 PM I got a personal reply from the Beeb! This was what I sent to them: Re: BBC4 Folk Night Thank you for a great night of music. Hopefully you will keep up this level of commitment to various music forms, particularly (for me) folk-roots and americana. Would you please investigate the possibility of repeating 'Transatlantic Sessions'. The first series was networked on BBC2, but the second was only transmitted on BBC Scotland, and many of the artists featured would appeal to the audience which enjoyed The Cambridge Folk Festival and Down From The Mountain programmes on Saturday. To which they replied: Thank you for your e-mail. I am pleased to read that you enjoyed the music on BBC FOUR. All feedback from viewers is important to the BBC as it helps us to make decisions about future programmes and services. There are currently no plans to screen a repeat of ˜Transatlantic Sessions" on the BBC's terrestrial or digital channels although I will certainly register your interest for the attention of our schedulers. Our future schedules are only confirmed up to ten days in advance, which means it is not possible to give details for programmes beyond this period. I am sure you can appreciate that plans can change and we would not wish to give you information that could prove incorrect. If you have access to the Internet, the BBC 'What's On' website carries listings up to seven days in advance. The address is: http://www.bbc.co.uk/whatson/ It also has a search facility that shows you when a particular programme is scheduled so you can look for its repeat. Once again thank you for taking the time to contact the BBC. Regards David Millar BBC Information So get e-mailing and make them take notice! BJ |

Subject: RE: Another Interesting BBC4 Eve From: Bullfrog Jones Date: 10 Jan 03 - 04:35 AM O.K., in the interests of balance, here's an ITV programme to watch out for -- The South Bank Show, Sunday night at 11.20 is a Willie Nelson special --- hopefully concentrating on his music rather more than his 32 million dollar tax bill! BJ |
|
Subject: RE: Another Interesting BBC4 Eve From: Ralphie Date: 11 Jan 03 - 04:44 AM BJ... Thanks for that...But, you have to admit that the Commercial TV and Radio companies, don't, (for obvious reasons!) normally programme such shows...So, It's probably about other aspects of Willies life, not just his music ! Happy Saturday Ralphie. BTW....The Northern Irish prog was great....Next week Donegal Fiddlers... |
