OBIT


"Young Frankenstein" has always been a favorite movie of many 'Catters so I thought this obit worthy of a post here. He did some really hilarious movies over the years and I watched "Raymond" in reruns mainly to see Peter Boyle. In "Raymond" they would write things for him from "Young Frankenstein" or "Taxi Driver" or a number of other parts that were kind of an inside joke.

Good actor......Good man. I'll miss him.

Steelyard Blues? He stole the whole movie!

There was also a VERY short-lived television series called "Joe Bash" where he played an old burned out beat cop (I think the term is "harness bull") that was one of the best things I've ever seen.

Missed? Oh yeah, without doubt, we've lost another of the good ones.

He managed to work past the possible typecasting after Mel Brook's inspired casting in Frankenstein. (Fred Gwynn had a harder time getting past his old Munster role). While he was in a lot of movies and programs, every time I saw him in something else I had to smile, because that Frankenstein role was a classic in the background.

He hadn't been looking well the last few times I saw him in programs. We have the answer to that now.

He did so many wonderful roles........Anybody remember a movie with Marty Feldman and Richard Pryor called "In God We Trust?" Hilarious as Hunter Thompson' attorney friend playing opposite Bill Murray in "Where the Buffalo Roam." I am so glad to have so many movies and shows to watch again and again. He was great...

He was good friends with John Lennon. Lennon was best man at Boyle's wedding.

He was the only member of the cast from "Everybody Loves Raymond" who din't win an Emmy for his performance in that series. And about the only one who deserved one.

My dad always called him Joe Boyle, I think probably because of the movie "Joe" which had him portraying a character which was almost the exact opposite of himself.

I loved the guy on Raymond. Didn't see him in any of those movies (but I will), but he was pure genius as Frank Romano.

First saw him in "Joe" and never forgot the face. That wonderful scene with his wife lining up the Chinese food cartons.
This is really sad. I will miss him.

That's Frank Barone Dani......And that was a character he created so well. "Frank" made several appearances on other series as they started up. Everybody might have loved Raymond, but everyone DID love Frank Barone.

He was extraordinary in "Monster's Ball" as Billy Bob Thornton's father in what could almost be considered a "bit" part. And what else.............as Joe McCarthy in "Tail Gunner Joe" or as Frank McGinnis in "The Brink's Job" with a great turn by Peter Falk.......as the gangster boss in "Johnny Dangerously."

Sometimes these things just get me bad.......this one really does

HE was a great and funny man... and a much better actor than Mel Brooks.

Don't overlook his incredible performances in the X file series.

One was a Christmas story and the other was strangulation by self eroticism.

Just to clarify, Boyle DID win an Emmy for his guest-starring role i X Files, but never won one for being in a comedy series though the rest of the regular cast of "Raymond" did.

Donuel, I don't remember the Christmas story one, but the one you refer to as 'strangulation by self eroticism' (actually 'auto-erotic asphyxiation') was really about a guy - a life insurance salesman - who could see how other people died, who said (truthfully or not) that's how Mulder would go. Dry, dark humor.

I hadn't seen him in E.L. Raymond, and I missed a quite a few of his movie roles. He always seemed to look so dignified and serious, and I think that intensified the impact of humor.

And at the end of the episode, that's how his character died.

"Joe" is where I first saw him, and have loved his roles ever since. Gifted and could stretch. This is a guy with a 3 octave acting range.

I will miss his work.

He could do crazy, corrupt, creepy, and he could be one of the joyfully funniest people ever seen on screen. R.I.P. Mr. Boyle, we'll miss you.

I'll never forget the image of Peter Boyle (as "Joe") shooting Susan Sarandon (as his daughter) in the face. That was, if not the first major movie for either of them, the first time I had ever seen either one.   Powerful movie.

Very talented actor.

A wonderful actor indeed, I just loved to see him on screen. He was another of that great breed of character players who could effortlessly steal scenes from the 'stars'. RIP Peter, and thanks for the memory.

I think I first saw him in "The Virgin President", one of the more obscure films on the face of the planet. (As far as I know, still not on video or DVD -- not even in most film review books.) He was the only "name" in the film -- but it was 1966 and nobody had yet to hear of him (including me).

Jeri, you've really missed something if you haven't seen him on Raymond. Once in a while you could catch the rest of the cast trying to keep it together when he came out with stuff. Catch some old episodes on Netflix!

As soon as I figure out how to hook up these stupid pieces of video equipment, I'll be checking out all these movies I never heard of!

I thought "Joe" was one of the most abysmal movies ever made, but I stayed in the theater and watched it to the end because of Peter Boyle's performance. It was the first time I'd seen him (it was his first movie), and he became one of the few actors whose presence in a movie is enough to make me watch it.

Does anyone know the name of the movie with Boyle, James Caan and Sally Kellerman from some time in the 70's. It was a crime caper comedy and featured a chase scene involving sinister looking black RV's. I'd like to rent it if it's available.

"Joe" probably was abysmal, Steve -- at least if I saw it NOW I'd probably think so.
But as I recall, it was really gripping back then - especially the ending. Anyway, Boyle and Sarandon are about all I remember from it.

IIRC, Peter Boyle doesn't shoot Susan Sarandon in JOE, nor does he play her father.

Her father is played by Dennis Patrick, who shoots her in the back as she's running away.
